Quick answer: in the UAE, most visa applications do not start at an embassy. Embassies are mostly in Abu Dhabi, a few countries also keep a consulate in Dubai, and the day to day work of collecting applications is done by outsourced visa centres such as VFS Global and BLS, usually in Dubai (Wafi Mall) and Abu Dhabi. Each guide below tells you which of the three actually handles your application, where to book, what the published fees are and what to bring.

Embassy, consulate or visa centre: who does what

Three different organisations get mixed up in searches such as “embassy Dubai” or “consulate Dubai”. The embassy is the diplomatic mission of a country and is normally in Abu Dhabi, the capital. A consulate is a smaller office, often in Dubai, that mainly serves its own citizens and sometimes handles specific visa categories. A visa centre such as VFS Global or BLS is a commercial company that books your appointment, checks that your file is complete, takes fingerprints and sends the file to the embassy. The embassy or consulate makes the decision. A visa centre cannot approve or refuse you.

The practical rule: for most tourist and business visas, check the country’s guide below before you turn up anywhere. Several embassies, including Australia and New Zealand, do not take visitor visa applications at all, and Gulf visas such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar are applied for online.

Schengen visa centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

These guides cover the Schengen countries where UAE residents book through VFS Global or BLS. Remember that you apply to the country of your main destination, and that appointments for some countries are released on a waitlist rather than a calendar. For the general picture, see our guide to Schengen visa appointments in Dubai.

How to avoid the common mistakes

  • Do not pay for a free appointment. Embassy and consulate booking systems, and the Korean G4K portal, do not charge for a slot. Look-alike sites do.
  • Use the official booking page. Type the address yourself or follow the link from the embassy’s own website.
  • Check the details on the day. Visa centre addresses, hours and fees change, and several centres have moved within their building. Each guide notes when we last checked.
  • Build a consistent file first. Dates, employer letter, bank statements and itinerary should tell the same story. Our Schengen visa documents checklist shows the standard file.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an embassy in Dubai?

Most embassies are in Abu Dhabi, which is the capital. Dubai has consulates and consulate generals for many countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan, but a consulate does not always process visas. Check the country guide above.

Where do I submit a visa application in Dubai?

For most Schengen countries, the UK, Canada and several Asian countries, you submit at an outsourced visa centre such as VFS Global, which has a large joint centre in Wafi Mall. For the United States you attend the consulate in Dubai or the embassy in Abu Dhabi for the interview. For Saudi Arabia and Qatar you apply online.

Can I walk in without an appointment?

Usually not. Most embassies, consulates and visa centres work by appointment, with limited exceptions for specific groups such as family members of EU citizens. Each country guide lists the exceptions we found on the official pages.

What is the difference between VFS Global and the embassy?

VFS Global is the service provider that receives your file and fingerprints. The embassy or consulate decides the visa. VFS staff cannot tell you whether you will be approved.

Does Visa Doctor decide my visa?

No. Only the government of the country you are applying to decides. We prepare your documents and help with booking steps.
