Netherlands visa appointments in the UAE are booked with VFS Global, which runs Netherlands visa application centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Gather your documents first, complete the online Schengen form, then book on the VFS Global Netherlands UAE website: you can apply up to 6 months before the trip and no later than 15 days before it. The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs decides the application, and its published average processing time for a Schengen visa is 25 calendar days, rising to 45 in some cases, which is longer than many other Schengen states. Plan for that.

How to book a Netherlands visa appointment in the UAE, step by step
- Check the Netherlands is your main destination: the country where you stay longest, or where you arrive first if the stays are equal. If you are also travelling to a non-Schengen country such as the UK or the US, VFS advises applying for that visa first.
- Gather every document on the checklist for your purpose of travel. NetherlandsWorldwide warns that an application can be rejected if documents are missing.
- Complete the online Schengen application form on the Netherlands consular portal. Only forms completed online get a unique code, and a form without one can cause problems. Print it.
- Book the appointment on the VFS Global Netherlands UAE booking page, one appointment for each member of a family or group, and say that you are part of a group. You receive a confirmation letter by email.
- Attend in person with the documents and the checklist itself. As a general rule every applicant attends, including babies and children. Your fingerprints and a live photo are taken, and you pay the service fee and the visa fee.
- Wait for the email. It tells you the passport is ready but not whether the visa was granted. Collect the passport at the centre or have it couriered.
Appointments can be cancelled up to 3 days before; a new booking then needs a new service fee payment. Appointments booked through the VFS waitlist cannot be rescheduled: you register on the waitlist again for a new date.
No Netherlands appointments available? What works
- Start early and count backwards. With 25 days of average processing, an appointment two weeks before departure is not enough. Aim to submit at least five to six weeks before you fly, and earlier in summer.
- Use the VFS waitlist when the calendar is full. VFS runs a waitlist for the Netherlands in the UAE; waitlist bookings cannot be rescheduled, so accept only a date you can attend. See how the VFS waitlist works.
- Check at varied times for cancellations, and keep your file ready so you can accept a slot at short notice.
- Consider the other centre if you can travel to it; Dubai and Abu Dhabi both take Netherlands applications.
- Genuine emergencies: the EU Visa Code allows a consulate to accept an application without an appointment, or give one immediately, in justified cases of urgency. Contact VFS or NetherlandsWorldwide with the evidence.
- Do not switch to a country you are not mainly visiting just because it has slots. It is a common reason for refusal.
What is a Netherlands Schengen visa?
It is the uniform short-stay visa (type C) for holidays, business trips or family visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, valid across the Schengen area. The Netherlands applies the same rules as every Schengen state, so it is the right country only if it is genuinely your main destination: the right choice for a week in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the wrong one if Amsterdam is a two-night stop on a longer trip elsewhere. The VFS centres can also take applications for the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom, which follow separate rules.
UAE citizens do not need a visa for short stays in the Schengen area. Most expatriate nationalities living in the UAE do. NetherlandsWorldwide lists visa fee exemptions for children under 6, pupils and students travelling for study with accompanying teachers, researchers, representatives of non-profit organisations aged 25 or under, and applicants covered by visa facilitation.
Netherlands visa documents checklist for UAE residents, by profile
The Netherlands checklist for your visa category is the final word, and missions update it without notice. This table is the standard Schengen file that UAE residents submit, arranged by who you are, so you can see what applies to you before you book.
- Every applicant
- Passport issued in the last 10 years, valid at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, with 2 blank pages; the online Schengen application form with its unique code, printed and signed; one recent ICAO standard photo; UAE residence visa and Emirates ID; travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000 valid for the whole Schengen area and the whole trip; flight reservation and hotel booking (or an invitation letter); personal bank statements for the period your checklist states, stamped by the bank; a cover letter explaining the trip.
- Employed
- Employer NOC or salary certificate on company letterhead stating your position, salary, start date and approved leave dates, signed with the signatory’s full name and position; recent payslips if your checklist asks for them; the bank statement should show the salary arriving each month.
- Business owner or self-employed
- UAE trade licence, proof that you own or partly own the company (for example the memorandum of association or partner list), company bank statements and your personal bank statements; a letter on company letterhead explaining the trip.
- Dependant spouse or child (sponsored)
- Sponsor’s NOC with a copy of the sponsor’s passport and UAE residence visa, the sponsor’s employment letter or trade licence, the sponsor’s bank statements, and the marriage or birth certificate. Children under 18 need consent from both parents, and a parent who is not travelling signs an authorisation.

Netherlands visa processing time from the UAE
NetherlandsWorldwide publishes an average of 25 calendar days for a Schengen visa, counted from the day the Consular Services Organisation receives your documents and passport. It can increase to 45 calendar days when the application is affected by high volume, needs further consideration or needs more documents. Some nationalities also require a consultation with other Schengen states, which can take up to 7 days within that 45-day period.

Common Netherlands visa refusal reasons and how to fix them
The grounds for refusing a Schengen visa are the same for every member state and are listed in Article 32 of the EU Visa Code. The refusal letter ticks the ground that applied and explains how to appeal. These are the ones we see most often in UAE files, and what prevents each one.

If a Netherlands visa is refused you receive an official letter explaining the decision. VFS notes that you have 4 weeks to object in writing, and that you can also object if the visa was granted but you disagree with, for example, its start date or validity.
