What is a Liechtenstein Schengen Visa?

A Liechtenstein Schengen visa lets UAE residents enter Liechtenstein and travel freely across all 29 Schengen Area member countries. It is required for non-GCC nationals living in the UAE who want to visit for tourism, business or any short stay. UAE passport holders are exempt and may travel visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

One thing sets Liechtenstein apart from every other Schengen state. It issues no Schengen visas of its own, operates no visa-issuing post in any country, and files no returns in the European Commission’s consulate-level visa statistics, which contain no rows for Liechtenstein in either 2024 or 2025. Switzerland decides Liechtenstein applications on its behalf.

The sticker in your passport is therefore a Swiss-issued Schengen Type C visa, and it admits you to Liechtenstein exactly as it admits you to the other 28 members. What changes is the counter you lodge at and the rules it applies.

Types of Liechtenstein Visas Available from the UAE

Tourist visa: the usual route for UAE residents adding Vaduz or Malbun to a European trip. Valid for up to 90 days in any 180-day period and lodged as a Swiss Schengen application.

Business visa: for meetings, client visits and conferences. Liechtenstein’s financial services and precision industrial sectors generate real repeat travel from the Gulf, and an invitation from the host company strengthens the file.

Family or friends visit: for UAE residents staying with a host in Liechtenstein or Switzerland, supported by an invitation and proof of the host’s status.

Airport transit visa: required for certain nationalities passing through a Schengen airport without entering the area. Liechtenstein has no airport, so arrivals come through Zurich or another hub.

Where UAE Residents Apply for a Liechtenstein Visa

Liechtenstein maintains no visa section in the UAE, and runs none anywhere else either. Switzerland acts for it. The Swiss foreign ministry states that the visa section of the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi processes applications from permanent residents of the UAE or Bahrain travelling to Switzerland or Liechtenstein, provided one of those is the main destination. You apply to Switzerland, and the Liechtenstein trip is covered.

Applications are submitted through VFS Global, not at the embassy. Switzerland requires Schengen category A and C applications to be lodged at its external service provider’s premises, and appointments are bookable only through the VFS website. There are centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, plus one in Manama for Bahrain. There is no split by emirate: residents of Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah or Al Ain may use either UAE centre, and the file is decided in Abu Dhabi either way.

That last point changed recently. The Swiss Consulate General in Dubai used to take visa decisions and no longer does: the Commission’s statistics show zero applications on the Swiss Dubai line for 2024, and in 2025 the Dubai row has gone entirely while Abu Dhabi carries the full volume. Articles still saying the Dubai consulate processes all visas for UAE residents are out of date. Note too that the VFS Switzerland page for the UAE never mentions Liechtenstein at all, which is why much of the market gets this wrong.

The main destination rule is applied at intake here, not at decision. Most Schengen missions weigh main destination when they assess a file. Switzerland states that applications listing a different Schengen country as the main destination will not be accepted at all, and Liechtenstein has no airport and is almost nobody’s main destination. If most of your nights are in Switzerland, the Swiss application is right anyway. If you sleep mostly in Austria, the application belongs to Austria even though Vaduz is on the itinerary.

Liechtenstein Visa Processing Time from the UAE

Processing is usually 15 calendar days from the date the embassy in Abu Dhabi receives a complete file. Two extensions run longer than the Schengen norm. Nationalities requiring consultation between Schengen states can take up to 14 additional days, and a file referred to the Swiss authorities in Bern can take up to 12 weeks. VFS also warns that high-volume periods cause delays.

We therefore advise applying four to six weeks before travel, earlier for summer and Christmas. Applications cannot be lodged more than six months ahead, and no appointment backlog figure is published for the Swiss mission.

There is no Liechtenstein refusal rate and there never can be, because Liechtenstein issues no visas and files no returns. Its applications are absorbed into Switzerland’s numbers. The relevant record is the Swiss post in Abu Dhabi: in 2025 it received 25,603 applications, issued 19,881 and refused 5,449, a refusal rate of 21.3%. In 2024 it received 27,148, issued 21,251 and refused 5,788, also 21.3%.
