Auckland, Queenstown, Rotorua and the fjords of Milford Sound are on a lot of UAE bucket lists, and many residents also fly to New Zealand to see family, attend a graduation or combine the trip with Australia. It is a long journey and a bigger budget, so the visa is worth getting right the first time. Visa Doctor helps UAE residents with New Zealand visitor visa applications from our Dubai office, and the first thing we check is whether your passport needs a visa at all or only an NZeTA.
๐ณ๐ฟ In this guide:
It depends on your passport, not on your UAE residence visa. New Zealand decides by nationality. Holding a UAE residence visa does not change which route you use.
Emirati citizens and other visa waiver nationals do not need a visitor visa for a short stay. The UAE, the UK, the US, Canada, Germany and France are all on Immigration New Zealand’s visa waiver list. You still need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before you travel, and you can stay up to 3 months, or up to 6 months if you are a UK citizen.
Most expat nationalities in the UAE need a visitor visa. India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt and Bangladesh are not on the visa waiver list, so citizens of those countries apply online for a New Zealand visitor visa before travelling. The table below shows which route applies to you.

Fees are the official figures published by Immigration New Zealand, checked on 27 September 2026. The online system shows the final amount before you pay.
Visitor visa. For holidays, visiting family and friends, and short courses. Immigration New Zealand says you can stay for up to 6 months or 9 months, and no more than 9 months in any 18 month period. Visitors may also study for up to 3 months and work remotely for an employer or client based outside New Zealand, but may not work for a New Zealand employer.
NZeTA with a visa waiver. Not a visa, but a travel authority that visa waiver nationals must hold before they travel. Immigration New Zealand gives it 2 years of validity for travellers, and each visit can last up to 3 months, or 6 months for UK citizens, with no more than 6 months in any 12 month period.
Transit through Auckland. If you only change planes at Auckland International Airport and your passport is not on the transit visa waiver list, you may need a transit visa. Immigration New Zealand also asks transit passengers to get an NZeTA before they travel. Check the official transit list for your nationality before booking a route via Auckland.
Online, with Immigration New Zealand. There is no New Zealand visa counter to visit in the UAE. The visitor visa is applied for online, and Immigration New Zealand states that from 1 October 2026 applications for this visa must be submitted through its enhanced Immigration Online system.
The NZeTA is requested through the official NZeTA app or the official website at nzeta.immigration.govt.nz. The app is the cheaper option.
The New Zealand Embassy in Abu Dhabi (International Tower, Capital Centre) lists notarial and consular services on its official page, not visa processing, so do not plan a trip there for a visitor visa.
Use only the official Immigration New Zealand websites and app. Lookalike sites add their own charges to the NZeTA and visa fees.
For a visitor visa, Immigration New Zealand asks you to show:
Immigration New Zealand also recommends full medical insurance for your stay, and it may take your photo, fingerprints or an iris scan as part of the process.
1. Confirm your route. Check your passport against the visa waiver list. If you are a visa waiver national staying within the allowed time, you need an NZeTA, not a visa.
2. Fix your dates and length of stay. Your funds are counted per month, so the length of stay sets how much you need to show.
3. Gather your evidence: passport, bank statements, onward travel and any invitation letter.
4. Create your account on Immigration Online and start the visitor visa application.
5. Fill in the form exactly as your passport reads and upload your documents.
6. Pay the fee online. The IVL is paid with the application.
7. Answer any request quickly. Immigration New Zealand may contact you for more information or ask for biometrics.
8. Travel on the decision. Check the conditions on your visa, including the length of stay and whether it allows one or more entries.
New Zealand’s fees are set by Immigration New Zealand and paid online. These are the official figures on 27 September 2026:
Keep in mind the cost of the evidence as well: onward flights, accommodation and medical insurance are not part of the visa fee.
Immigration New Zealand states that 80% of visitor visa applications are processed within 2 weeks. The remaining 20% take longer, often because more information is requested, so apply well before your travel date and avoid non-refundable bookings until you have the decision.
For an NZeTA, Immigration New Zealand says to allow 72 hours, although many requests are processed more quickly. You must have it before you travel, so do not leave it to the day of the flight.
Immigration New Zealand does not publish refusal statistics for the UAE, but the official rules show where applications from here most often stall:
We do not issue visas and nobody outside Immigration New Zealand can guarantee one. What we control is that your application is complete, accurate and sent through the right official route.
It depends on your passport, not on your UAE residence. Citizens of visa waiver countries, which include the UAE, the UK, the US, Canada, Germany and France, do not need a visitor visa for a short stay but must get an NZeTA before they travel. Citizens of countries that are not on the visa waiver list, such as India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt and Bangladesh, need a New Zealand visitor visa.
No visitor visa is needed for a short stay. The United Arab Emirates is on Immigration New Zealand’s list of visa waiver countries, so Emirati citizens can visit for up to 3 months with an NZeTA, which they must have before travelling.
Immigration New Zealand lists the visitor visa from NZD 441. Its May 2026 fees guide shows how that is made up for most nationalities: an NZD 300 application fee and an NZD 41 immigration levy, plus the NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL). These are the official figures checked on 27 September 2026.
The NZeTA costs NZD 17 through the official NZeTA app or NZD 23 on the website, according to Immigration New Zealand’s May 2026 fees guide, and the NZD 100 IVL is paid at the same time. The IVL is not refunded, even if the request is declined.
Immigration New Zealand states that 80% of visitor visa applications are processed within 2 weeks. The rest take longer, so apply well before you book anything you cannot change. For an NZeTA, Immigration New Zealand says to allow 72 hours.
Immigration New Zealand asks for at least NZD 1,000 for each month of your stay, or NZD 400 a month if your accommodation is already paid for. You can show this with bank statements, or a sponsor can support you.
On a visitor visa you can stay for up to 6 months or 9 months, depending on the visa, and no more than 9 months in any 18 month period. Visa waiver visitors with an NZeTA can stay up to 3 months, or up to 6 months for UK citizens, and no more than 6 months in any 12 month period.
No. Visitor visas are applied for online with Immigration New Zealand, and from 1 October 2026 visitor visa applications must go through its enhanced Immigration Online system. The New Zealand Embassy in Abu Dhabi lists notarial and consular services, not visa processing.
You cannot work for a New Zealand employer. Immigration New Zealand allows visitors to holiday, visit family and friends, study for up to 3 months and work remotely for an employer or client based outside New Zealand.
Immigration New Zealand requires your passport to be valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand. This applies both to visitor visa holders and to visa waiver travellers using an NZeTA.
Checked on 27 September 2026. Rules and fees change, so confirm with the official source before you apply.
