Quick answer: Ireland is not in the Schengen area — a Schengen visa does not let you in. Most UAE residents need a separate Irish Short Stay ‘C’ visa, applied for online through AVATS and submitted via VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Emirati nationals travel visa-free for up to 90 days. And some nationalities holding a UK short-stay visa can skip the Irish visa entirely under the Short Stay Visa Waiver Programme.

Ireland is not Schengen — this catches people out

Ireland is in the European Union but it is not part of the Schengen area. It runs its own immigration system as part of the Common Travel Area with the UK. Your Schengen visa is worthless for Dublin, and an Irish visa does not let you into the Schengen countries. If your European trip includes Ireland, you are dealing with two separate applications.

Do you actually need an Irish visa?

Who you areWhat applies
UAE national (Emirati)Visa-free, up to 90 days
Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Turkish, Saudi, Qatari and others holding a valid UK short-stay visaMay travel without an Irish visa under the Short Stay Visa Waiver Programme — strict conditions apply
Most other UAE residents (Indian, Egyptian, Filipino, Bangladeshi…)Need an Irish Short Stay ‘C’ visa
Pakistani nationalsAlways need an Irish visa — Pakistan is not on the waiver list

Important: UAE residency gives you nothing here. It is your passport that decides.

How to apply from the UAE

  1. Complete the online application on the Irish immigration AVATS portal and print the summary sheet.
  2. Pay the visa fee — around EUR 60 (single entry) or EUR 100 (multiple entry), plus the VFS service charge.
  3. Submit your passport and documents at VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
  4. VFS forwards your file to the Embassy of Ireland in Abu Dhabi, which makes the decision.

Processing time — be realistic

Short-stay Irish visas commonly take around 4 to 8 weeks from the date the Embassy receives your complete file, and longer in peak season or if they request more documents.

There is no priority or fast-track option. Ireland does not sell an express service to applicants in the UAE. Any agency promising an “urgent Irish visa” is misleading you. Plan 8–10 weeks ahead and do not book non-refundable travel.

Documents you will typically need

  • Passport, valid well beyond your return, plus previous passports.
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, with good validity remaining.
  • Signed AVATS application summary and a compliant photo (check yours with our photo checker).
  • Bank statements, typically 6 months, stamped, showing steady salary credits.
  • Employment letter / NOC, or trade licence if self-employed.
  • Flight and hotel reservations and a day-by-day itinerary.
  • A signed letter of application explaining your trip — Ireland places real weight on this. Use our cover letter generator.
  • Travel insurance.

What decides an Irish visa

Irish visa officers weigh finances and ties, much like the UK. Unexplained lump-sum deposits shortly before applying are the classic refusal trigger. Your UAE job, salary history, tenancy and residence visa are your strongest evidence you will return. Test your profile with the approval-chance estimator, and if you have been refused before, read the wording with our refusal decoder — and always declare it.
