Quick answer: Yes, Indian passport holders need a visa for Ireland, and a Schengen visa does not work (Ireland is not in Schengen). As an Indian resident of the UAE you apply for an Irish Short Stay ‘C’ visa through AVATS, submitting at VFS in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Two exceptions matter: if you hold a valid UK short-stay visa and have landed in the UK, you may travel visa-free under the waiver programme, but the British-Irish Visa Scheme (BIVS) is not available to you, because it requires you to be living in India when you apply.

Ireland is a growing destination for Indian professionals in the UAE, tech jobs in Dublin, family visits, tourism. But the rules are widely misreported. Here is the accurate picture for 2026.

Ireland is not Schengen

Your Schengen visa is useless for Dublin. Ireland runs its own system as part of the Common Travel Area with the UK. If your European trip includes Ireland and, say, France, that is two separate visa applications.

Route 1: The Irish Short Stay C visa (the normal path)

  1. Complete the online AVATS application and print the summary sheet.
  2. Pay the fee, around EUR 60 single entry or EUR 100 multiple entry, plus the VFS charge.
  3. Submit at VFS Global, Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
  4. The Embassy of Ireland in Abu Dhabi decides.

Expect around 4 to 8 weeks, longer in peak season. There is no fast-track or priority option for Ireland from the UAE, anyone promising an “urgent Irish visa” is not being straight with you.

Documents

  • Indian passport plus old passports.
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID.
  • Bank statements, typically 6 months, stamped, showing steady salary.
  • Employment letter / NOC stating salary and approved leave.
  • Flights, accommodation and a day-by-day itinerary.
  • A signed letter of application, Ireland weighs this heavily. Use our cover letter generator.
  • Travel insurance.

Route 2: Travelling on your UK visa (the waiver)

India is on Ireland Short Stay Visa Waiver list. So if you hold a valid UK short-stay visit visa and have already landed in the UK on it, you may travel on to Ireland without an Irish visa, for up to 90 days or the remainder of your UK permission, whichever is shorter.

The traps: you cannot fly Dubai straight to Dublin on this basis, and a UK ETA does not count. Full detail: visiting Ireland on a UK visa.

The BIVS trap, read this before you believe other articles

The British-Irish Visa Scheme lets Indian nationals visit both the UK and Ireland on one visa endorsed BIVS. Sounds ideal. But the eligibility rule is explicit: it applies to Indian nationals living in India at the time of application.

If you are an Indian national resident in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, you are not eligible for BIVS. Plenty of blogs get this wrong and send UAE-based Indians down a dead end. You use either the standard Irish visa, or the UK-visa waiver route above.

What decides your application

As with the UK, it comes down to finances and ties. Salary landing monthly beats a lump sum deposited a week before applying, that pattern causes more Irish refusals than anything else. Your UAE job, tenancy and residence visa are strong evidence you will return. Gauge your case with the approval-chance estimator; if you have been refused before, declare it and read our refusal decoder.

Frequently asked questions

Can Indians use a Schengen visa for Ireland?

No. Ireland is not in the Schengen area and requires its own visa.

Can I apply for the Irish visa from Dubai?

Yes. Apply online via AVATS and submit at VFS in Dubai or Abu Dhabi using your Emirates ID and residence visa.

Am I eligible for the British-Irish Visa Scheme as an Indian in the UAE?

No. BIVS requires Indian nationals to be living in India at the time of application. UAE-based Indians are not eligible.

Can I visit Ireland on my UK visa?

Yes, if you hold a valid UK short-stay visa and have already landed in the UK. You cannot fly directly from Dubai to Dublin on it.

Is there an urgent Irish visa service?

No. Ireland offers no priority or fast-track processing from the UAE. Plan 8 to 10 weeks ahead.

Irish visa rules change and the waiver programme is kept under review. This guide is general information, always confirm current requirements with the Irish Immigration Service (irishimmigration.ie) or the Embassy of Ireland before you travel, or contact our agents. Visa Doctor is a licensed private service provider and does not issue visas.

  1. The BIVS point is the one we correct most often for Indian clients in the UAE. The scheme genuinely exists, but the rule requires you to be living in India when you apply. If you are based in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, it is not open to you, whatever other websites say. Your realistic routes are the standard Irish visa, or the UK-visa waiver if you already hold a UK visit visa.
