Quick answer: For most visa applications filed from the UAE, you submit three to six months of personal bank statements, stamped and signed by the bank, ending within about a month of your application date. Almost no country publishes a required balance for tourist visas, the test is whether you can pay for your trip and are clearly returning home. A practical benchmark used across Schengen consulates is roughly the equivalent of AED 300 to 500 per day of travel, plus flights and accommodation if they are not prepaid. What sinks applications is rarely the number: it is a balance that appeared suddenly, statements that do not match the salary certificate, or an account with no history at all.

How many statements: three months or six?

The answer depends on the destination, but if you prepare six months of stamped statements you are covered almost everywhere and you never have to go back to the bank.

DestinationTypical period requestedNotes for UAE residents
Schengen states3 to 6 monthsVaries by consulate. Several Dubai-facing consulates ask for six. Statements must be bank-stamped; app screenshots are usually rejected.
United KingdomTypically 6 monthsNo fixed balance published. The rules ask you to show you can meet the cost of the trip without working or using public funds.
United StatesNot formally collectedOfficers may ask at the interview. Bring six months, stamped, even though there is no document counter.
Canada / Australia4 to 6 monthsUploaded digitally. Consistency with your declared income matters more than the raw balance.
Japan / South Korea3 to 6 monthsOften paired with an employment certificate. Some posts also want a salary transfer letter.

Always take the requirement from the consulate or VFS page for your destination on the day you apply. Our visa document checklist generator pulls the right combination for your nationality, residence and destination.

How much balance do you actually need?

There is no magic figure, and any agent who quotes you one as a rule is guessing. What consulates assess is sufficiency: enough to cover the trip you have described, at the standard you have described it, without needing to work.

Work it out from the bottom up rather than reaching for a round number:

  • Daily living costs. Many Schengen states publish an indicative daily amount for visitors. Across the bloc these tend to land in a band that converts to roughly AED 300 to 500 per person per day, and some states publish considerably more. Use the published figure for the country you are applying to.
  • Accommodation. If your hotel is prepaid and you have the confirmation, it stops being a cash requirement. If you are staying with family, the invitation letter carries that weight instead.
  • Flights. Same logic: prepaid and documented, or budgeted from your balance.
  • A buffer. A closing balance that exactly equals your calculated trip cost looks engineered. A reasonable margin looks like a person who can afford to travel.

The visa bank balance calculator does this arithmetic for your destination, trip length and party size, and the UAE visa cost calculator adds the visa fee and VFS charges so you know the true total.

The three things that actually cause financial refusals

1. The sudden deposit

An account that sits at AED 4,000 for five months and then receives AED 60,000 eleven days before the application is the single most recognisable pattern in visa assessment. Officers see it constantly. It reads as borrowed money that will be returned the moment the visa is issued, and it converts an otherwise fine application into a refusal for insufficient or unreliable means of subsistence.

If you have a legitimate large credit, a bonus, an end-of-service payment, the sale of a car, a gratuity, a genuine gift from a parent, document it and explain it in the cover letter before the officer has to wonder. An explained deposit is not a problem. An unexplained one is.

2. Statements that contradict the salary certificate

Your employment letter says AED 12,000 a month. Your statements show credits of AED 7,500 from a company with a slightly different name. That mismatch is a bigger problem than a low balance, because it puts the honesty of the whole file in question. Salary certificate, contract, pay slips and bank credits should tell one consistent story. If part of your package is paid in cash or through a different entity, say so explicitly.

3. Nothing but a balance

A statement showing a healthy closing figure but almost no transactions is weak. Consulates want to see an account that is used, salary in, rent out, groceries, utilities, the ordinary texture of a life in the UAE. That pattern is what proves you live here, which is what proves you are coming back.

These themes recur across our casework; see common reasons for visa rejection for the full picture, and paste any refusal wording into the visa refusal reason decoder to see which ground was actually cited.

Practical rules for UAE residents

  • Get them stamped. Print statements at the branch or request stamped PDFs through your bank. Emirates NBD, ADCB, Mashreq, FAB and the rest all issue these; a screenshot from the app is not a bank statement.
  • Match the account to the applicant. Statements should be in the traveller’s own name. If a spouse or parent is sponsoring the trip, submit their statements plus proof of relationship and a sponsorship letter, and say so in the cover letter.
  • Do not submit credit card limits as funds. Some consulates will accept a credit card statement as supporting evidence, but an available limit is not a balance and should never be your primary proof.
  • Fixed deposits and investments help, as support. They show depth, but a visa officer wants to see accessible cash for the trip itself.
  • Freshness matters. A statement ending three months before your appointment invites the question of what has happened since.
  • Self-employed and freelancers: submit the trade licence, company bank statements and personal statements, and explain how you draw income. This group gets refused far more often for presentation than for substance.

Write the explanation properly with the visa cover letter generator; if someone else is funding you, the visa invitation letter generator handles the sponsor side. To sanity-check the whole file before you pay any fee, run it through the visa approval chance calculator, and plan your submission date with the visa timeline calculator.

How Visa Doctor helps

Visa Doctor is a licensed visa documentation company in Dubai (SPC Free Zone, licence 4417571.01). Financial evidence is where we spend most of our review time, because it is where most avoidable refusals come from. We read your statements the way a consular officer will: we flag the deposits that will be questioned, reconcile your credits against your salary certificate, tell you honestly if your balance is short for the trip you have planned, and draft the explanation that pre-empts the officer’s objection. If you are self-employed, we build the picture across your trade licence, company and personal accounts. See our visa services in Dubai, or the destination guides for applying for a Schengen visa from Dubai, the UK from Dubai, and nationality-specific pages such as UK visas for Sri Lankan citizens and US visas for Pakistani citizens. If you need a Schengen appointment quickly, see urgent Schengen visa help, and if you already hold one, keep track of your days with the Schengen 90/180 day calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many months of bank statements do I need for a Schengen visa from Dubai?

Most consulates serving the UAE ask for three to six months, stamped by the bank. Preparing six months covers nearly every requirement and means you do not have to return to the branch if the consulate asks for more.

Is there a minimum bank balance for a UK or Schengen visitor visa?

Neither publishes a fixed minimum for visitors. Both apply a sufficiency test: can you fund the trip you have described without working illegally. Schengen states publish indicative daily amounts, which is the closest thing to a number you will find.

Can I show my father’s or husband’s bank statements?

Yes, if they are genuinely sponsoring you. Submit their statements, a signed sponsorship letter, proof of the relationship, and your own statements as well. Submitting only a sponsor’s account without explaining the relationship is a common cause of refusal.

Will a large deposit before applying get me refused?

Not automatically, but an unexplained one very well might. Document the source, whether it is a bonus, gratuity, asset sale or family gift, and reference it in your cover letter so the officer does not have to speculate.

Are mobile banking app screenshots accepted?

Generally no. Consulates and VFS expect an official statement bearing the bank’s stamp or a verifiable digital signature. Request one from your branch or through your bank’s official statement service.

Visa rules change frequently. Fees, processing times and document requirements can be updated without notice, always confirm on the official government website, or contact our agents. Visa Doctor is a private service provider and does not issue visas.
