A honeymoon is one of the most emotional trips people plan from the UAE, and also one of the easiest to complicate. The couple has often just married, one or both passports may carry a different name from the one used on other documents, travel history may be thin, and the wedding itself may have used up the savings. None of that blocks a Schengen visa, but it means the file needs more care than a routine holiday application. This guide walks through the practical steps for newlyweds who live in the UAE.
Every traveller needs an individual application, a form, a passport and a fee. Spouses usually book appointments together and submit at the same time, which keeps the files consistent and makes it simple to explain that you travel as a couple. Both applications should name the same destination country, the same entry and exit dates, and the same accommodation. Differences in dates or hotels between two spouses are a common reason for questions. If you are unsure which country to approach, check which centre serves your emirate before booking.
Bring the original marriage certificate and a copy. If it was issued outside the UAE, find out whether the consulate wants it attested or translated, because requirements differ between countries and change over time, and confirm on the official consulate or visa centre page. If you married in the UAE, the certificate and your Emirates IDs usually show the relationship clearly. A marriage certificate is not a replacement for the normal file; it supports the story that you are travelling as a couple and that your finances may be shared.
| Situation | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Both spouses employed in the UAE | Employment letters, salary certificates, three to six months of bank statements for each, leave approval |
| One spouse sponsors the other | Sponsor letter, sponsor income proof, proof of relationship, the sponsored spouse residence visa |
| Passport still shows a maiden name | Marriage certificate, and a short explanation letter that links the two names |
| Limited travel history | Strong proof of residence, employment and a realistic short itinerary |
| Savings used for the wedding | Honest statements, a clear budget for the trip, no sudden unexplained deposits |
If one spouse changed their surname after the wedding but the passport still shows the old name, make sure every document uses a consistent name and attach the marriage certificate to show the link. Do not apply with a new surname on the form and an old surname on the passport without explanation. Our guide to name mismatches between passport and visa application covers the details, and the common form mistakes article lists the errors that cause delays.
The consulate wants to see that the trip is affordable for both of you. You can show two sets of statements, or one account with a clear letter if you share finances. If one spouse is financially dependent, the other acts as sponsor and the file must show that sponsor’s income. Our pages on dependent spouses and sponsor letters explain how to document this. A realistic bank balance matters more than a very high figure that appeared the week before applying.
Book refundable accommodation and flight reservations that show the full itinerary. Many couples prepay a honeymoon package before they apply; that is risky, because a refusal or a delay can leave the money stuck. A good itinerary is simple: one or two bases, a few nights each, and travel days that make sense. Cash gifts received at the wedding are fine to use as savings if you can show where they went, but large cash deposits are difficult to explain, so spread the explanation through a short cover letter. If you have never travelled before, read about applying with no travel history.
Apply once the wedding date is certain, and leave a buffer for the consulate to ask for extra documents. Check your passport validity, your UAE residence visa and your leave dates before you book. If the trip is close, use the 90/180 day calculator to confirm that earlier travel does not reduce your allowance, and see the passport travel index if your nationality needs extra checks. Our guide to travelling while a visa is processing helps if you must hand in your passport before a wedding trip elsewhere.

No. A honeymoon is a tourist trip, so you apply for a normal short stay Schengen visa to the country where you will spend the most nights.
Each person has their own application and must usually attend biometrics in person, although family members can submit together at the same appointment.
It is not always listed as mandatory, but it is strongly recommended because it proves your relationship and explains shared finances.
Provide each spouse’s own statements and a short letter explaining the position. Avoid sudden transfers between accounts just before applying.
It is safer to choose refundable bookings until the visa is issued, because a refusal does not refund non-refundable packages.
