Many applicants submit a Schengen application and then discover that a work trip, a family event or a home country visit lands inside the waiting period. The question is simple: can you leave the country while the application is with the consulate? The honest answer depends mostly on one thing, where your passport physically is.
For most Schengen applications lodged in the UAE, the passport is submitted with the application and stays with the visa centre or the consulate until a decision is made. After the decision, it is returned with the visa sticker or with a refusal. You can see how the handover works in our guide to tracking your Schengen visa and collecting your passport. Until then, you hold a receipt, not a travel document.
That means a flight abroad is not possible on your usual passport, because airlines will not accept a receipt. A few countries accept a UAE residence permit or Emirates ID for entry from the GCC, but this is a narrow exception and it depends on your nationality and the destination, so check the destination’s rules rather than assuming.
Under the EU Visa Code the standard decision window is up to 15 calendar days from the date the application is admissible, and it can be extended to 45 days, or in exceptional cases to 60 days, if the consulate needs more checks. Real timings vary by consulate and season. Add the time it takes for the application to travel between the centre and the consulate, and the passport to travel back.
Because of this, a trip planned for the middle of the wait is the most dangerous kind. If you are asked for an extra document, a bank statement refresh or an interview, the delay of being abroad can cost you the appointment or push your decision later. Our guide on funds refusals shows how often a small missing paper turns into a refusal.
If the trip is certain and the Europe trip is flexible, lodge the application after you return. Applications can be submitted up to six months before travel, so there is usually room to move. Use the Schengen 90/180 calculator and the document checklist generator to prepare so you can lodge quickly once you are back.
If the Schengen trip is fixed and soon, protect it. Missing a decision, a document request or a biometric step can cost more than the other trip is worth. Our article on how far ahead to book explains how to build more margin between booking and travel.
Some applicants hold a second valid passport. This can be legitimate, but the two passports must be declared honestly, and the visa application must be consistent with the travel history in each. Never use a second passport to hide a previous refusal. A refusal on one record affects the next decision, as explained in how a refusal affects future applications.
Do not book non refundable flights to another country that fall inside the decision window. Do not assume the visa centre will release the passport early for a personal trip; this is rarely offered and should be treated as an exception. Do not travel to a country whose entry rules you have not read on its official site.
Also be careful with bookings. Your Schengen itinerary and your hotel proof need to stay valid while you wait. See our note on hotel booking proof and on dummy versus real tickets so your documents do not expire before the consulate reads them.
| Situation | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Passport held by the visa centre | You cannot board an international flight until it is returned |
| Short trip within the UAE or by road to a GCC state | Check whether your destination allows entry on your Emirates ID alone, and whether you will be asked for your passport |
| Second valid passport | Possible for dual nationals, but declare it honestly and keep details consistent |
| Consulate asks for extra documents or an interview | You may be needed in the UAE at short notice |
| Travel before a decision on a visa that is not yet issued | Risk of missing a request, a delayed return or a wasted booking |

Not on that passport. You would need a different valid passport, or a destination that accepts another document. Always confirm with the destination’s official entry rules.
Some centres have a withdrawal process, but withdrawing normally ends the application and fees are usually not refunded. Ask the centre what applies to you before deciding.
Travel itself does not harm an application, but being unreachable or abroad when the consulate asks for something can delay or damage it.
Domestic travel is usually fine, but carry your Emirates ID and your application receipt, and stay reachable.
Up to six months before travel is allowed, and applying earlier gives you more flexibility around other plans.
