| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Do Afghan citizens need a Schengen visa? | Yes. Afghanistan is on the EU list of countries whose nationals need a visa for short stays. |
| Airport transit visa? | Usually yes. Afghanistan is on the common EU list for airport transit visas, unless an exemption applies. |
| Can I apply from the UAE? | Yes, if you are legally resident. You apply to the consulate responsible for the country where you live, using your Emirates ID and residence visa. |
| Which consulate? | The country where you will spend the most nights. If nights are equal, the country you enter first. |
| Visa fee | โฌ90 adults, โฌ45 children aged 6 to 11, free under 6. Afghanistan has no reduced fee arrangement. |
| Decision time | 15 calendar days normally, extendable to 45 in individual cases. Some states consult their central authorities on certain nationalities, which can add time. |
| When to apply | No earlier than 6 months and, as a rule, no later than 15 days before travel. |
Under the Schengen Visa Code, the consulate responsible for your application is the one of your main destination. That is the Schengen country where you will spend the longest part of your stay. If you split your time equally, it is the country you enter first.
So the real question is not which embassy is easiest. It is which of your genuine destinations is also a sound choice. If your trip is flexible, for example a holiday where you could base yourself in Italy or Spain, the shortlist below is a reasonable place to start. If your sister lives in Munich and you will stay with her for two weeks, your destination is Germany, whatever the statistics say. Our guide to the main destination rule explains how consulates check this.
The European Commission publishes Schengen visa statistics for each consulate. For 2025, these were the lowest refusal rates among non-Nordic consulates in the UAE with meaningful volumes, plus Germany as the largest mainstream option.
| Consulate (decision location) | 2025 refusal rate, all nationalities | Fits best if you will spend most nights in |
|---|---|---|
| Italy, Abu Dhabi | 12.9% | Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence or the Italian coast |
| Spain, Abu Dhabi | 14.1% | Madrid, Barcelona, Andalusia or the islands |
| Greece, Abu Dhabi | 15.6% | Athens or the Greek islands |
| Austria, Abu Dhabi | 16.4% | Vienna, Salzburg or the Alps |
| France, Abu Dhabi | 16.7% | Paris, the Riviera or other French regions |
| Belgium, Abu Dhabi | 19.8% | Brussels, Bruges or Antwerp |
| Germany, Dubai | 22.0% | Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, trade fairs or family visits |

These rates mix every nationality that applies at that consulate. They are not the refusal rate for Afghan passport holders, and Afghan applicants can face a different result than the average. A low rate can also reflect who applies there, for example many salaried UAE residents with long travel histories, rather than a softer approach.
On the other side of the table, some consulates in the UAE refuse far more than half of their files. Bulgaria was at 58.2% in 2025. Do not choose a destination just to avoid a high rate, and do not chase a low rate you cannot justify with your itinerary. For more figures, see our Schengen refusal data by consulate and the UAE Schengen visa statistics.
Consulates assess the individual file against the reasons listed in Article 32 of the Visa Code. The same four areas come up again and again.
Stable life in the UAE. A valid residence visa with time left, a current employment contract or trade licence, and several months of salary credited to the same account show that you live and earn here.
Clear funds for the trip. Your bank statements should show regular income and a believable balance for the length of stay. Our bank statement guide shows what consulates look for. Unexplained large deposits are a common problem.
A trip that makes sense. The route, the dates, the accommodation, the insurance with at least โฌ30,000 cover and the stated purpose should all match. A short cover letter can explain anything unusual, such as a recent job change.
Reasons to return, and a clean record. Family, employment and previous compliant travel all help. Previous refusals, overstays or visa problems must be declared honestly, since an inconsistent statement is a refusal ground on its own.
Airport transit. Afghan nationals need an airport transit visa for most connections through a Schengen airport, unless they hold a qualifying visa or residence permit. If your flight to the UK, the US or another destination changes planes in Frankfurt, Paris or Amsterdam, check this before you buy the ticket.
Extra processing time. Some Schengen states consult their central authorities on applications from certain nationalities, and this can push a decision towards the 45 day limit. Apply as early as the rules allow, no earlier than 6 months before travel, and do not buy non-refundable flights before the decision.
Read the refusal form carefully. It lists the grounds that applied. Declare the earlier refusal on your next application, fix the specific problem the consulate named, and do not simply resubmit the same documents. You also have a right to appeal in the refusing state within the period stated on the form. Our guide on avoiding Schengen refusal in the UAE covers the common causes.
We help Afghan passport holders who live in the UAE choose the correct consulate for their real itinerary, review bank statements and documents before they are submitted, check insurance and reservations, and write a cover letter that deals with finances and ties directly. The decision always belongs to the consulate and we do not promise results. See our urgent Schengen service, all services and who we are. There is no single best embassy, because you must apply to the consulate of your main destination. If your trip is flexible, Italy, Spain, Greece, Austria, France and Belgium had the lowest non-Nordic refusal rates in the UAE in 2025 across all nationalities, but these are not Afghan-specific figures and nothing is guaranteed.
No. The consulate of the country where you will spend the most nights is responsible for your application. Applying elsewhere can lead to the application being treated as inadmissible or refused, and it creates a refusal record that follows you.
Usually yes. Afghanistan is on the common EU list of nationalities that need an airport transit visa to change planes in a Schengen airport, unless an exemption applies, for example certain valid visas or residence permits. Check this before you book a connecting itinerary.
The standard decision time is 15 calendar days. It can be extended up to 45 days in individual cases, for example when the consulate needs further checks or consultation with the authorities of other Schengen states, which may apply to Afghan nationals.
It lets you apply from the UAE and shows stable ties to the country, but it does not guarantee approval. The consulate looks at income, employment, travel history and whether your plans are realistic.
No. Submit one application at a time to the correct consulate. Every refusal is recorded in the EU visa system, and a second application with the same file usually gets the same result.
Renew it first. The passport should normally be valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area and have been issued within the last 10 years, with enough blank pages.
Checked 13 October 2026. Consulate refusal rates are taken from the European Commission Schengen visa statistics for 2025. Rules on responsibility, decision times, fees and refusal grounds come from the Visa Code.
