Quick answer: In practice, no. You only have one passport, and almost every visa application from the UAE requires you to hand that passport over at submission. While it is with one consulate, you cannot submit it to another. There are narrow exceptions, mainly where one of the applications is fully online and does not need the physical book, such as a UK electronic travel authorisation or a US online application before the interview. Two Schengen applications at once is a different problem entirely, and one you should not attempt.

The passport is the bottleneck

People ask this question for a sensible reason. Appointment waits in Dubai and Abu Dhabi can be long, travel plans are uncertain, and running two applications in parallel feels like it should halve the wait. The obstacle is physical rather than legal. Schengen consulates, the UK, the United States and most others require the original passport to be lodged at submission so the visa can be printed and stuck into it.

Your passport goes in at the visa application centre and comes back when a decision is made. During that window it is not available to anyone else, including you. This is the same constraint that causes the problem we describe in our post on what happens if your passport expires while your visa is being processed.

CombinationPossible in parallel?Why
Two Schengen visasNoOne passport, and only one Schengen state is competent to decide
Schengen plus UKNoBoth require the physical passport at submission
Schengen plus a US application before interviewPartlyThe online form and fee can proceed, the interview cannot
Schengen plus a UK electronic travel authorisationUsually yesThe authorisation is digital and linked to passport data
Schengen plus an electronic visa for a third countryUsually yesNo sticker, no passport submission

Two Schengen applications at once is the one to avoid

This deserves its own warning. The Schengen system decides which country is responsible for your application using the main destination rule: the state where you will spend the most nights, or the first state you enter if the nights are evenly split. That rule is explained in our guide to the Schengen main destination rule from Dubai.

Only one state is competent to decide your application. Submitting to two of them for overlapping travel is not a clever workaround. Schengen states share a common visa information system, so a second application is visible, and the likely outcome is that both are refused rather than one being approved faster. It also creates exactly the impression you do not want a consular officer to have, which is that you are shopping for a decision. Our post on refusals on weak ties grounds covers how credibility judgements get made.

What you can genuinely run in parallel

The useful exceptions are the digital ones. If your destination issues an electronic authorisation rather than a sticker, there is nothing to lodge and nothing to wait for. The UK electronic travel authorisation works this way for eligible nationalities, and our guide to the UK eVisa and our comparison of the UK authorisation versus a full visa explain who falls into which category.

On the US side, you can complete the online application and pay the fee while your passport is elsewhere. What you cannot do is attend the interview, because the passport is required there. Our US visa appointment scheduling guide for Dubai covers the sequencing, and if you are eligible for renewal without an interview, our page on the interview waiver route is the one to read.

Countries that issue purely electronic visas are also fine to run alongside a sticker application. Several destinations that UAE residents travel to regularly work this way, and our country guides for Turkey, Vietnam and Indonesia and Bali set out which are electronic and which are not.

The better strategy: sequence properly

If you need two visas for two trips, the answer is not parallel submission. It is ordering them correctly and building in enough runway.

Start with the trip that is closest, or the application with the longest expected processing time, whichever is more urgent. Then plan the second submission for after the passport is back. Our guide on how far ahead to book a Schengen appointment from Dubai and the embassy processing times page will give you the two numbers you need to do that arithmetic honestly.

There is also a smarter move available to frequent travellers. Rather than applying twice, apply once for a longer multiple entry visa that covers both trips. Our guide to the multiple entry Schengen visa from Dubai explains what the consulate is looking for, and the Schengen 90/180 calculator will confirm that both trips fit inside your allowance.

Before any of it, check your passport. If you are close to the validity limits, or you are an Indian national affected by the changes to Indian consular services in the UAE in 2026, the renewal needs to happen first. Our passport validity and blank page guide covers the thresholds, and yes, blank pages matter too. Two visas in the same year means two stickers and a stack of entry records.

To plan the paperwork itself, the visa document checklist generator produces the list for each destination, the visa cost calculator tells you what two applications will actually cost, and the visa approval chance calculator gives you a read on each file. All of it sits on the visa tools page, alongside the passport travel index if one of your trips could be done visa free instead.

How Visa Doctor helps

Most people who ask us this question do not actually need two visas. They need one visa with the right validity, or they need the two trips sequenced so the passport is free when it needs to be. Working that out takes one conversation and it usually saves a fee, an appointment slot and several weeks.

Where two applications genuinely are needed, we plan the order, book around the passport window, and build both files so neither creates a problem for the other. We handle visa documentation from Dubai for Schengen, the United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland and Australia, and if one of the trips is against a hard date, our urgent Schengen visa service is built for that.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for a Schengen visa and a UK visa at the same time from Dubai?

Not in parallel, because both require the original passport at submission. Apply for one, wait for the passport to be returned, then apply for the other. Build the timeline backwards from your earliest travel date.

What if I apply to two Schengen countries for the same trip?

Do not. Only one Schengen state is competent to decide your application under the main destination rule, applications are visible across the shared system, and the likely result is that both are refused.

Can I do a US visa application while my passport is at a Schengen consulate?

You can complete the online form and pay the fee, but you cannot attend the interview without your passport. Schedule the interview for after the passport is back.

Do electronic authorisations need my physical passport?

Generally no. Electronic travel authorisations and electronic visas are linked to your passport data rather than to the book itself, so they can normally be applied for while the passport is elsewhere. Confirm on the official site for your destination.

Is a second passport an option?

Some countries issue second passports in limited circumstances, usually for business travellers, and the rules differ entirely by nationality. It is worth asking your own embassy in the UAE, but treat it as a long term solution rather than a fix for a trip next month.
