Quick answer: You cannot simply request a multiple entry Schengen visa from Dubai. Consulates decide whether to issue one based on your travel history, the purpose of your trip and how well documented your ongoing need to travel is. Under EU rules, applicants who have used previous Schengen visas properly can be issued progressively longer multiple entry visas, sometimes valid up to five years, but this is at the discretion of each consulate, not a fixed entitlement.

A single entry Schengen visa lets you enter the Schengen area once and leave once, inside the validity window on your visa sticker. A multiple entry visa lets you enter and exit as many times as you like within that window, as long as you respect the 90 days in any 180 day rule. For UAE residents who travel to Europe often, whether for business, family visits or regular holidays, a multiple entry visa removes the need to reapply for every trip. The challenge is that consulates do not hand these out automatically, and understanding how the decision actually works will help you build a stronger application.

How consulates decide between single and multiple entry

Under the EU Visa Code, consulates have discretion to issue multiple entry visas, and in practice they weigh a few consistent factors:

  • Travel history. Applicants who have previously held Schengen visas and used them correctly, meaning they travelled within the dates, did not overstay and did not violate the terms, are viewed more favourably for a multiple entry visa on their next application.
  • Purpose of travel. A single planned holiday reads differently to a consulate than a genuine, ongoing need to travel, such as regular business meetings, a partner or close family member living in the Schengen area, or recurring professional obligations.
  • Strength of ties to the UAE. Consulates want confidence that you will return to the UAE after each trip. Stable employment, a valid residence visa, property or family ties in the UAE all support this.
  • Financial stability. Multiple entry visas assume multiple trips, so consulates look for evidence you can fund repeat travel, not just a single trip’s budget.

None of these factors guarantee a multiple entry visa on your first application. Many first time applicants receive a single entry or short validity multiple entry visa, then qualify for longer validity on subsequent applications once a track record exists.

The EU’s progressive issuance approach

EU Visa Code rules allow consulates to issue multiple entry visas with progressively longer validity to applicants who have properly used Schengen visas in the past. In practice this often works as a step by step progression: a first multiple entry visa might be valid for around a year, a second properly used visa can lead to a longer validity visa, and consistent, compliant travel history can eventually support a visa valid up to five years, always within the applicant’s passport validity. This is not an automatic entitlement or a fixed timeline. It depends on the individual consulate’s assessment and can vary by Schengen country. Applicants should never assume a specific validity period will be granted and should always check current practice with the consulate they are applying through.

Applicant profileTypical outcome
First time Schengen applicant, single planned tripUsually single entry, matched closely to the trip dates.
Repeat traveller with a clean visa historyOften eligible for multiple entry, sometimes with extended validity, subject to consulate discretion.
Business traveller with documented recurring needStronger case for multiple entry even without a long personal travel history, if the business case is well documented.
Applicant with a previous overstay or visa violationMultiple entry is unlikely, and future applications generally become harder.

Documents that support a multiple entry request

You do not “apply” for multiple entry separately, it is assessed as part of your standard Schengen application. To make the strongest possible case, prepare:

  • Copies of previous Schengen visas and the passport pages showing entry and exit stamps, if you have travelled before. This is the single strongest evidence of a clean travel history.
  • A cover letter explaining your ongoing reason to travel to the Schengen area, whether that is business, family, or recurring personal travel, rather than a one off trip.
  • Proof of stable ties to the UAE: a current employment letter or NOC, tenancy contract, or, if self employed, your trade licence and business documentation.
  • Recent bank statements showing financial stability, not just enough for a single trip.
  • If applicable, an invitation letter or business correspondence supporting a recurring relationship with a company or contact in the Schengen area.

Does the consulate you apply through matter?

Yes, in the sense that each Schengen country’s consulate applies its own internal practice within the EU framework. Spain’s applications are handled through BLS International, with centres at I Rise Tower in Barsha Heights (Tecom), Dubai, and Tamouh Tower on Al Reem Island, Abu Dhabi. Italy’s Dubai centre serves Dubai and the Northern Emirates only, with Abu Dhabi and Al Ain residents applying separately. Germany currently runs a waitlist system split by emirate. France has no visa centre in Dubai at all, and VFS Global lists Abu Dhabi as the submission point for the whole UAE. If multiple entry validity matters to you, it is worth applying through the country you visit most often or plan to visit again soon, since that consulate will have the clearest view of your travel pattern to their territory specifically. See our Schengen 90/180 day calculator to plan multiple trips within your allowance once you do have a multiple entry visa.

Common mistakes that work against you

Applicants sometimes assume that simply asking for “multiple entry” on the form increases their chances. It does not. What matters is the underlying evidence. Other common mistakes include applying with a passport that has too little remaining validity to support a longer visa, submitting a generic cover letter that does not explain a recurring need to travel, and failing to include previous visa and stamp evidence when it exists. If your last Schengen visa was refused, read our guide on appealing versus reapplying before your next attempt, since a poorly handled refusal can hurt future multiple entry chances more than the original refusal itself, as covered in our piece on how a refusal affects future applications.

How Visa Doctor helps

Multiple entry visas are earned through the strength and consistency of your documentation, not requested. Our team builds your cover letter and supporting file around the specific case for repeat travel, whether that is business, family or personal, and makes sure your travel history, financial evidence and UAE ties are presented the way each consulate expects to see them. We also help you choose the right Schengen country to apply through if you are not sure, based on where your trip pattern is strongest. If you are travelling for a specific event, our guide on event travel visa lead times is also worth a look, and if a Christmas markets trip is what is bringing you back to Europe this year, see our guide on when to apply for a Christmas markets trip. Frequently asked questions

Can I request a multiple entry Schengen visa directly on the application form?

You can indicate your intended travel pattern, but multiple entry is granted based on the consulate’s assessment of your travel history, purpose and ties, not simply because you asked for it.

How long can a multiple entry Schengen visa be valid for?

It depends on the consulate’s assessment and your travel history. First multiple entry visas are often shorter, with longer validity, up to a maximum of five years, possible after a track record of compliant travel. There is no automatic entitlement to any specific validity period.

Do I need a multiple entry visa if I only travel to Europe once a year?

Not necessarily. A single entry visa is sufficient if you only have one planned trip. Multiple entry becomes useful once you have a genuine, ongoing reason to make more than one trip within the visa’s validity window.

Does a multiple entry visa let me stay longer than 90 days?

No. A multiple entry Schengen visa still limits your total stay to 90 days in any 180 day period across the whole Schengen area, regardless of how many separate trips you make.

Which Schengen country is most likely to grant multiple entry to UAE residents?

There is no single answer, since each consulate assesses applications individually. Applying through the country you visit most often, with strong supporting evidence of previous travel and ongoing ties, generally gives you the best chance.
