BLS Stops Travel Agents Booking Spain Visa Appointments in the UAE

What actually changed

BLS International, the authorised service provider that handles Spain visa applications on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the UAE, announced a new appointment booking system in the last week of July 2026. The system verifies during the booking process that the person making the appointment is the same person who will attend it, and it links each appointment to the applicant’s passport number and personal data. The stated aim is to stop appointment slots being resold or transferred, and to reduce the use of automated booking scripts.

The practical effect for UAE residents is straightforward. You can no longer hand your passport and travel dates to a travel agent, PRO or family member and have them log in and grab you a Spain visa appointment slot. BLS has said explicitly that appointments obtained through intermediaries or third parties will be rejected at the door of the Visa Application Centre, even if the booking itself went through without an error message.

When this takes effect

The change was announced and rolled out immediately at the end of July 2026, and it is already in force for anyone booking a new Spain visa appointment in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. If you already had an appointment booked before the change, BLS has not indicated that existing bookings are cancelled, but if you need to change your date you will now be going through the new self-booking system to do it.

Who this affects

This affects every UAE resident applying for a Spain Schengen visa through BLS, whether it is a tourist visit, a business trip, or a visa linked to family or property in Spain. It also affects a group that previously had an easier path: spouses of European Economic Area (EEA) and EU citizens. Under the old system, these applicants could often be accommodated as walk-ins. Under the new system, EEA and EU spouses must now schedule an appointment in advance like everyone else, and walk-ins are no longer guaranteed.

We can no longer log into the BLS portal and book the slot in your name using your passport, because the system is built to catch exactly that. What you need to do now

Book directly on the official BLS Spain website using your own name, passport number and contact details. Do this yourself, or sit with whoever is helping you while they guide you through it on your own device and your own login. Keep a screenshot of your confirmed appointment, since you will need to bring the printed confirmation with you to the Visa Application Centre.

Understand that you cannot simply reschedule if your plans change. If your travel date shifts, you have to cancel your existing appointment and book a new one from scratch, subject to whatever slots are available at that time. Any BLS booking fee you already paid online is not refunded if you cancel or fail to attend, so treat your booked date as close to final before you confirm it.

Ignore anyone, in person or online, who offers to sell you an earlier appointment or a guaranteed visa outcome for a fee. BLS has stated plainly that visa decisions are made only by the Spanish authorities, that BLS staff will never ask for cash payments to secure or expedite a slot, and that booking through the official website is free. If you are offered a paid shortcut, it is very likely a scam, and BLS has asked applicants to report such offers through its official complaint channels.

Get your employer documents right before you book. BLS has reiterated that no objection certificates and salary certificates must be signed by an authorised company representative, must clearly show that person’s full name and job title, and must include their Emirates ID number or a copy of their Emirates ID. A generic or unsigned letter is one of the most common reasons a file gets flagged at the counter. You will also need a valid travel insurance certificate covering medical evacuation and repatriation for a minimum of €30,000, which is the standard Schengen requirement applied at Spain’s Visa Application Centres.
