Do Nepali citizens need a Schengen visa at all

There is no way around this one. Nepal is not on the European Union’s list of visa-exempt nationalities, so a Nepali passport holder needs a short-stay Schengen visa (a “type C” visa) to enter France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Greece, or any of the other Schengen countries for tourism, business or family visits of up to 90 days in any 180 day period. This applies whether you are travelling from Kathmandu directly or from the UAE, where a very large Nepali community lives and works.

Can you apply from the UAE instead of Nepal

Generally yes, and this is the main reason Nepali residents in the UAE come to us rather than trying to arrange a Europe visa on a trip home. Most Schengen consulates operating through their Visa Application Centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi will accept an application from a Nepali citizen who holds a valid UAE residence visa, provided that residence visa remains valid for a set period beyond your planned return date, commonly at least three months. If your UAE residence visa is close to expiry, or you are on a visit visa rather than a residence visa, some consulates may ask you to apply through your country of nationality instead, so this is worth checking before you commit to a travel date.

Which Visa Application Centre you use depends on the destination country, not your nationality. Italy’s centre in Dubai currently serves applicants based in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, while Abu Dhabi and Al Ain applicants use a separate centre. Spain visa applications go through BLS International, not VFS Global, with centres in Barsha Heights (Tecom) in Dubai and on Al Reem Island in Abu Dhabi. France has no dedicated visa centre in Dubai at all, so Dubai-based applicants submit through the Abu Dhabi centre. Germany runs a waitlist system and also splits Dubai and the Northern Emirates from Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. None of these routing rules change based on whether you hold a Nepali, Indian, Filipino or any other passport, they are the same for every nationality applying from the UAE.

The document list is largely the same as for any other UAE resident applying for a Schengen visa, with a couple of points that matter more for Nepali applicants specifically because reviewing officers weigh ties to your home country carefully.

What officers tend to look at more closely

Reviewing officers are trained to assess whether an applicant is likely to return home after the trip, and this assessment usually looks at ties to both your country of nationality and your country of residence. For a Nepali applicant based in the UAE, that generally means your UAE job, your salary, how long you have held your residence visa, and any family, property or financial commitments back in Nepal all get looked at together. A thin file with a brand new UAE job, minimal savings, and no clear ties to Nepal is more likely to raise questions than one that tells a consistent, well-documented story. This is not unique to Nepali applicants, the same applies to residents of any nationality where the visa officer is weighing return likelihood, but it is worth being deliberate about since assumptions are sometimes made based on passport alone.

The current standard Schengen visa fee is €90 for adults, with reduced fees for children aged six to eleven and no fee at all for children under six. This is set by the Schengen states themselves and applies equally regardless of your nationality. On top of the consulate fee, expect a service charge from VFS Global or BLS International, plus the cost of your insurance and any dummy or confirmed flight booking you use to apply.
