Quick answer: This is the most common question we get, and the honest answer is uncomfortable: you do not get to choose based on availability. Schengen rules require you to apply to your main destination, the country where you will spend the longest time. Picking whichever consulate has slots is one of the best known causes of refusal. What you can legitimately do is choose where you actually go, and then apply correctly.

Why the question is a trap

Every visa forum has someone advising you to apply through whichever country has appointments. It sounds practical and it gets people refused.

The rule is clear. You apply to the country that is your main destination, meaning where you will spend the longest part of the trip. If your stay is evenly split, you apply to the country of first entry. Consulates examine itineraries, hotel bookings and flight routing, and a mismatch between your stated destination and your actual plan is a refusal reason. A refusal then sits on your record and makes future applications harder.

So the useful reframing is not which consulate is fastest, it is which country do I genuinely want to spend the most time in, and how do I apply there properly.

What legitimately varies between countries

Consulates differ in how they manage demand, and this changes constantly, so treat any specific claim with caution and verify on the official site. What we can state factually about the UAE right now:

  • Spain uses BLS International, not VFS. Different platform entirely, which is why people wrongly conclude there is no availability.
  • France has no visa centre in Dubai. VFS lists Abu Dhabi for the whole UAE, so Dubai residents travel there.
  • Italy in Dubai accepts only Dubai and Northern Emirates residents.
  • Germany operates a waitlist, splits Dubai and Northern Emirates from Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and warns that peak season booking without waitlist registration is highly unlikely.

Notice that none of this tells you which is fastest. It tells you where to look and which rules apply. Availability shifts week to week.

If your trip really is flexible

If you genuinely have not decided where to go, then you are allowed to decide based on what is achievable. That is not gaming the system, that is choosing a destination. Pick the country, plan to spend the longest time there, and apply to it honestly.

What you cannot do is plan ten days in Italy, apply through a consulate with slots, and hope nobody notices.

The genuinely faster alternatives

If the goal is a trip rather than Europe specifically, and you hold a UAE residence visa, several destinations are dramatically easier at short notice, including visa free and eVisa options depending on your passport. Our passport travel index shows exactly what your nationality plus UAE residency opens up. For many UAE residents that includes Georgia, Turkey and others that can be arranged in days rather than months.

What actually speeds things up

  1. Applying early. Up to six months ahead. This solves the problem for most people.
  2. Registering on the waitlist where one exists.
  3. Having a complete, correct file so you can take a cancellation immediately and so your application is not delayed by a document request.
  4. Booking the right category and centre, since the wrong one costs you the slot and the fee.

Frequently asked questions

Which Schengen country is easiest to get an appointment for from Dubai?

Availability changes constantly, so any fixed answer would be unreliable. More importantly, you cannot choose a consulate based on availability. You must apply to your main destination, where you will spend the longest time.

What is the main destination rule?

You apply to the country where you will spend the longest part of your trip. If the stay is evenly split, you apply to the country of first entry. Consulates check itineraries and mismatches cause refusals.

Can I choose my destination based on which country has appointments?

Only if you genuinely have not decided where to travel. Choosing a country and actually spending the most time there is legitimate. Applying to one country while planning to spend your trip in another is not.

Does applying to the wrong country really cause refusals?

Yes, it is one of the most common refusal reasons. A refusal also stays on your record and makes subsequent applications harder.

What is faster than a Schengen visa from the UAE?

Depending on your passport and UAE residency, destinations such as Georgia and Turkey can often be arranged far faster. Our passport travel index shows what is open to you.
