Why passport rules trip up UAE residents specifically
In the UAE you are usually travelling on a passport from one country while holding a UAE residence visa. Airlines at Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah run automated document checks at the gate, and immigration at your destination applies its own rules. Two things go wrong most often: people assume “my passport does not expire until next year, so I am fine,” and people run out of blank pages after years of Gulf travel. Both can end a trip before it starts. The safe habit is to check three separate things — remaining validity, the issue date, and blank pages — every time you plan a trip.
The Schengen rules: three tests, not one
The Schengen Area applies three requirements together, and your passport must pass all of them.
1. Three months beyond departure
Your passport must be valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave the Schengen Area — not the date you arrive. 2. Issued within the last ten years
The passport must have been issued no more than ten years before your date of travel. This catches people out because some countries used to add extra months to a renewed passport, so a document can show a future expiry date yet still be “older than ten years” from its issue date. If more than ten years have passed since issue, you can be refused entry regardless of remaining validity.
3. At least two blank pages
You need at least two blank pages for the visa sticker and for entry and exit stamps. Pages that already carry stamps or old visas do not count as blank. Frequent travellers based in the UAE fill pages quickly, so this is worth checking early.

The UK and the “whole of your stay” rule
The UK is more relaxed on validity: your passport generally needs to be valid for the whole period you intend to stay, rather than a fixed number of extra months. You still need a blank page for any vignette. The common “six-month rule” for many destinations
A large number of countries — across Asia, the Middle East and beyond — require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry. This is a rule of thumb, not a universal law, and the exact requirement varies, so never assume. When to renew, and what a damaged passport means
Renew early. If your passport is within a year of expiry, or you are short on blank pages, renew before you apply for a visa — not after, because a new passport number will not match a visa issued in the old one. A torn, water-damaged or heavily worn passport can also be rejected even if the dates are fine, because the machine-readable zone may not scan. What does the ten-year passport rule mean?
