Do Sri Lankan citizens need a UK visa?
Yes, and there is no shortcut around it. The UK divides the world into three groups: nationals who need no permission in advance, nationals who need an ETA, and nationals who need a full visa. Sri Lanka sits firmly in the third group. That means a Sri Lankan passport holder must obtain a Standard Visitor visa (or the relevant work, study or family visa) before travelling, even for a short holiday or a family visit.
Transit matters too. If you are connecting through Heathrow or another UK airport and your itinerary takes you through UK border control, you will normally need a visa. Even airside transit can require a Direct Airside Transit Visa depending on the airport and your onward route. Do not assume a boarding pass to a third country is enough, check the transit rules for your specific routing before you book.

Applying from the UAE instead of Sri Lanka
This is the single biggest advantage a UAE-based Sri Lankan applicant has. UK Visas and Immigration allows you to apply from the country where you are lawfully resident. With a valid UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, you apply through the Dubai or Abu Dhabi route rather than through Colombo. Two things follow from that:
- Your UAE ties become your evidence. A salary certificate on company letterhead, an employment contract, six months of UAE bank statements and a tenancy contract collectively answer the question every entry clearance officer is really asking: will this person go back? A stable job in Dubai is a much stronger anchor than a tourist itinerary.
- Your residence visa must outlast your trip. As a rule of thumb, keep at least six months of validity on your UAE residence visa at the point of application. A residence visa expiring a few weeks after your intended return raises an obvious question about where you actually intend to live.
Applicants with only a UAE visit visa, or whose residence visa has been cancelled, are in a much weaker position and are usually better off applying from Sri Lanka. Money: the part that decides most cases
The UK does not publish a fixed bank balance for visitor visas. What it publishes is a test: you must show you can meet the cost of your trip without working illegally or accessing public funds. In practice, caseworkers read your statements as a story. Steady salary credits, a balance that has built up gradually, and a closing balance comfortably above the cost of the trip read well. A balance that jumps by tens of thousands of dirhams a week before you apply reads badly, and unexplained large deposits are one of the most common reasons a well-qualified applicant gets refused.

Fees, biometrics and timelines
UK visa fees are set in US dollars and converted at the fixed AED peg, so the dirham cost moves only when the Home Office changes the schedule. A six-month Standard Visitor visa currently sits at roughly the equivalent of a few hundred dirhams, with priority and super-priority services available at extra cost; always confirm the exact figure on the official Home Office fee tool before you pay, since the schedule is revised periodically. On top of the visa fee you will pay a VFS service charge, and optional add-ons such as prime time appointments or courier return.
After you pay, you book a biometrics appointment at a VFS Global centre. You attend in person, have your fingerprints and photograph taken, and hand over your supporting documents. Can a Sri Lankan citizen apply for a UK visa from Dubai without UAE residency?
You can physically submit an application from the UAE, but without a residence visa and Emirates ID you have no ties to this country to show, and the application is assessed as if you were applying from Sri Lanka with the added oddity of applying from abroad. In almost all cases, applying from your country of residence is the stronger route.
Does a UK visa refusal affect my UAE residence visa?
No. A UK refusal has no effect on your UAE residence status. It does become part of your travel history, so you must declare it on future applications to the UK and to most other countries, and you should be able to explain what changed since.
Do Sri Lankan citizens need a UK ETA instead of a visa?
No. The Electronic Travel Authorisation scheme is only for nationalities that do not require a visa. Sri Lanka is a visa-national country, so an ETA is not available and a full visa is required.
How long should my UAE residence visa be valid when I apply?
Aim for at least six months of remaining validity at the date of application. A residence visa expiring shortly after your planned return undermines the argument that the UAE is where you live and work.
Can I include my spouse and children in one UK application?
