Quick answer: Italy is the one Schengen country that splits the UAE between two different visa centre operators. If your UAE residence visa was issued in Dubai or one of the Northern Emirates, you apply through VFS Global Italy in Dubai, which works for the Consulate General of Italy in Dubai. If it was issued in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain or Al Dhafra, you apply through BLS International in Abu Dhabi, which works for the Embassy of Italy. Check which one applies to you before you book, because neither centre takes residents of the other jurisdiction.
The Italian Embassy in Abu Dhabi states that residents of Dubai and the Northern Emirates apply through the Consulate General in Dubai, which operates through the VFS Global Dubai office. A notice from the Consulate General dated March 2026 places the VFS Global Dubai visa application centre at The Gate, DIFC, and DIFC’s own directory lists it at Gate Avenue 3, Dubai International Financial Centre. The same notice says applicants must hold a residence visa issued by one of the Northern Emirates’ authorities, meaning the emirate on your residence visa decides where you go.
That detail catches people out. Many other countries share the large VFS joint centre at Wafi Mall, and a number of guides assume Italy is there too. For Italy, use the address on your own booking confirmation, and treat older articles that mention Wafi with caution. Our broader Italy visa from Dubai page covers fees, documents and refusal reasons; this guide is about finding and using the right centre.
Last checked: 2 October 2026, against the Embassy of Italy in Abu Dhabi visa page, the Consulate General of Italy in Dubai notice of March 2026, the VFS Global Italy UAE page and the DIFC listing. Hours, addresses and fees can change, so confirm them on the booking page.
If your Emirates ID and residence visa were issued in one emirate but you live or work in another, the issuing emirate is what counts. A slot at the wrong centre is wasted along with the service fee. The VFS Global Italy page also notes that each user ID, with its email address and mobile number, can book only one appointment at a time, so do not create several accounts to hold options open.
The portal asks for applicant details before you see dates. A slot for next week is only useful if your documents are ready, so assemble the file against the Schengen documents checklist and the Italian checklist for your category before you start clicking.
Book one appointment per applicant. VFS states that applications cannot be submitted more than six months before travel. You receive a confirmation email and appointment letter.
Bring the printed Schengen application form with the letter. Italy follows the common Schengen requirement that you attend in person for fingerprints and a photograph.
The visa fee for adults is EUR 90 under the Schengen rules, and the VFS Italy page listed AED 388 on the day we checked, with lower amounts for children aged 6 to 12. VFS adds a separate service charge shown at booking. Fees follow an exchange rate and can change.
If your residence visa is from Abu Dhabi, Al Ain or Al Dhafra, the Embassy states that tourist visa appointments are booked on the BLS International portal, and that applications are delivered Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 15:00 with passport collection from 09:00 to 17:00. Business visa applicants may go to the BLS centre at any time without an appointment, according to the Embassy. Italian national visas for categories such as employment, family reunion and medical reasons are submitted at the Embassy in Abu Dhabi, as the VFS Italy page notes for transit, employment, family reunification and medical applicants.
The Embassy also stresses that the paid extras BLS offers, including its premium lounge, are optional and are not required to submit an application. The same is true of paid extras at any visa centre. Family members of EU citizens have a separate route and can request a direct appointment with the Embassy visa office, so check the Embassy page if that describes you.
You show your confirmation letter and passport at the entrance, hand over the printed form and documents, and an agent checks the file against the list for your visa type. They confirm the file is complete; they do not decide whether it will be approved. You give fingerprints and a photograph unless you are exempt, for example because they were taken for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months or you are under 12, and you pay the fees. You leave with a receipt and reference number for tracking.
For a step by step view of a typical visit, including how long it takes and why you may be asked to leave bags outside, see our guide to biometrics at VFS Dubai.
Leave large bags and laptops at home, because VFS centres commonly restrict them.
Italy is one of the most requested Schengen destinations among UAE residents, and the Dubai centre serves a very large population. Between roughly May and September, and around Eid and school holidays, demand runs ahead of the slots released. The consulate controls how many appointments exist; VFS only operates the booking system. Our guide on what to do when no Schengen appointments are available goes through the legitimate options, and how far ahead to book sets out a timeline.
Practical steps that help:
The Consulate General’s March 2026 notice is a good example of why you should check official pages before travelling. It said visa services would gradually resume from 23 March 2026 after temporary restrictions linked to regional instability, that business applications could be submitted again with dedicated appointments, and that services remained subject to change. Check the Consulate’s news page and your confirmation email in the days before your appointment.
We are not VFS, BLS or the Italian consulate, and we cannot create appointments or promise a visa. A documentation agency can confirm which jurisdiction you belong to, check Italy is your main destination, prepare a consistent file and watch the official system for slots. See visa appointment booking in Dubai for how we approach it, and Schengen visa appointments in Dubai for the wider picture.

Yes. VFS Global runs the Italy Visa Application Centre in Dubai for residents of Dubai and the Northern Emirates. The Consulate General of Italy’s March 2026 notice places it at The Gate, DIFC. Check your booking confirmation for the address.
Yes, but only for Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra residents. BLS International runs the Italy centre at Nation Towers Mall in Abu Dhabi for the Embassy. Dubai and Northern Emirates residents use VFS.
Not if your residence visa was issued in Dubai or a Northern Emirate. The Embassy limits BLS Abu Dhabi to residents of the Abu Dhabi jurisdiction, and the Consulate limits the Dubai route to Northern Emirates residents.
VFS states that applications cannot be submitted more than six months before travel, and the Schengen rules set a minimum of 15 days. Book earlier than that minimum in practice, because appointments are the bottleneck.
In Abu Dhabi, the Embassy says business visa applicants can go to the BLS centre without an appointment. For Dubai, the Consulate’s March 2026 notice said dedicated business appointments are booked through the portal. Check the current instructions.
No. The Italian Embassy says the extras BLS offers are optional and not needed to submit an application. Treat paid extras at any centre as a convenience, not a requirement.
