Quick answer: German Schengen visa applications in the UAE are accepted by appointment only at the VFS Global Germany Visa Application Centres, one in Dubai for Dubai and the Northern Emirates and one in Abu Dhabi for Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. The German missions ask you to register on the VFS waitlist as soon as possible, because the notification to book a slot is valid for only 24 hours. All applications in the UAE are decided by the German Consulate General in Dubai, and the German missions say processing can take up to 15 days.

VFS Germany Dubai: how the system actually works

Most searchers expect to open a calendar and pick a date. For Germany, that is often the wrong starting point. The German missions in the UAE say visa applications can be submitted by appointment only at the VFS Global Germany centres, and they ask applicants to register on the waitlist as soon as possible, with a link to the VFS booking page. The same page says the notification to book an appointment slot is valid for 24 hours.

So the waitlist is not a fallback for Germany, it is the system. The VFS Global Germany page for the UAE, as relayed in our guide on how the VFS waitlist works in the UAE, states that when the visa section releases slots, waitlisted applicants are notified in chronological order, and that remaining slots go into the public calendar only after those on the waitlist have been offered one. VFS describes May to September as a peak period in which booking without registering is highly unlikely. Our country page, Germany visa from Dubai, covers the documents, fees and refusal reasons in full.

Last checked: 2 October 2026, against the German Missions in the UAE Schengen visa page and the VFS Global Germany UAE page. Procedures change often, so confirm them on the booking page when you register.

The two centres and who uses which

  • Dubai: the VFS Global Germany centre for residents of Dubai and the Northern Emirates. VFS describes it as the Joint Visa Application Centre in Dubai, which sits at Wafi Mall, Umm Hurair 2. VFS relocated that centre within the mall to Phase 5 Horus, first floor, effective 17 March 2025, so use the address on your booking confirmation rather than an older guide.
  • Abu Dhabi: the VFS Global Germany centre for residents of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.
  • Decision: the German Consulate General in Dubai decides all visa applications in the UAE, including those lodged in Abu Dhabi.

Book at the centre that matches your emirate. An appointment made in one centre cannot normally be moved to the other, and each person needs a separate appointment and a separate application.

How to get a Germany appointment step by step

1. Confirm Germany is your main destination

Apply to Germany if it is where you spend the longest part of the trip, or the first country you enter if stays are equal. Do not choose Germany because another country has no slots. Our guide on which Schengen country has the fastest appointment explains why that backfires.

2. Register on the waitlist

Do this on the VFS Global Germany UAE page the day your dates are fixed. The queue is chronological, so the registration date matters more than how often you refresh.

3. Watch your inbox, including spam

When slots are released you receive an email. The link is valid for 24 hours, so you need your file ready to commit to a date immediately. A late reply can mean going back to the end of the queue.

4. Book under the right category

Germany separates Short Stay, covering tourism and family visits, from Business, covering work-related travel. If you book the wrong category you may not be allowed to submit on the day, and you would have to book again.

5. Complete the Videx form

Short stay applicants fill the Videx form on the German Federal Foreign Office portal, print it and bring it with the printed appointment letter. Check the current instructions on the German missions page, as the exact form depends on the visa type.

Fees

The Schengen visa fee is EUR 90 for adults under the common rules. On 2 October 2026 the VFS Global Germany page listed AED 390 for a standard adult Schengen visa, AED 200 for children aged 6 to 11 and AED 150 for nationalities covered by visa facilitation agreements, plus a VFS service fee of AED 146.74. VFS states that all fees are non-refundable and follow the current exchange rate, and the German missions say fees are paid in dirhams. Check the live page before you pay.

Walk-in for family members of EU citizens

The German missions state that spouses of German or EU citizens and parents of minor German or EU citizens, who are UAE residents, may walk in to a visa application centre without an appointment. If that describes you, you do not need to join the waitlist, but you should read the missions’ page for the documents you must bring.

What happens at the centre

  • Entry: your appointment letter and passport are checked. Only applicants are normally admitted.
  • Document check: an agent confirms the file is complete against the German checklist for your purpose. This is not an assessment.
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and a photograph unless you are exempt.
  • Payment: the visa fee and the VFS service fee.
  • Tracking and collection: you receive a reference, and later an email when the decision has returned to the centre. You collect the passport or pay for courier return.

Read biometrics at VFS Dubai: what actually happens for a fuller account. Bring the printed Videx form, appointment letter, passport, Emirates ID, residence visa copy and the supporting file in checklist order. The Schengen visa documents checklist shows the standard file by profile. Leave large bags and laptops at home, because VFS centres commonly restrict them.

Germany business visa from the UAE

Book the Business category and follow the German checklist for business travel, trade fairs and congresses. Expect an invitation from the German company or organiser, a letter from your UAE employer confirming your position and the purpose of the trip, and evidence of who is paying the costs, in addition to the standard documents. The category on the booking must match the purpose on your application.

Timing and processing

You can apply up to six months before travel. The German missions state that processing can take up to 15 days, which under EU rules can be extended in individual cases. That is a published statement, not a promise for your file, and the consulate keeps your passport until it decides. Build the timeline from your flight backwards: decision time, the waitlist or appointment wait, and a margin for extra documents. Our guide on how far in advance to book a Schengen appointment in Dubai sets out a sensible plan.

Rescheduling and cancelling

Appointments booked through the waitlist may not be reschedulable. If you need a different date, you may have to register again and wait for a new offer, so accept only a date you can attend. Cancelling is possible up to a few days before the appointment, but a new booking needs a new service fee, so confirm the current policy on the VFS page.

If no slots appear

Register first, then prepare. Have your file complete so you can accept a 24 hour invitation immediately. Plan outside May to September where you can. Our guide on no Schengen appointments available in Dubai sets out the legitimate options, and whether VFS Prime Time is worth it explains the paid out-of-hours slots. Neither creates additional appointments. What does not work is paying anyone for a promised date. The German consulate may accept an urgent, documented case without an appointment, at its discretion.

When an agency helps

We are not VFS or the German consulate. We cannot create appointments or promise a visa. What a documentation agency can do is register you on the correct waitlist under the correct category, check the Videx form against your documents and watch your inbox for a release, so the 24 hour window is not wasted. See visa appointment booking in Dubai and Schengen visa appointments in Dubai for how that works.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a VFS Germany centre in Dubai?

Yes. The German missions refer applicants to the VFS Global Germany centre in Dubai, which serves Dubai and the Northern Emirates, and a second centre in Abu Dhabi for Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. VFS calls the Dubai site the Joint Visa Application Centre.

Do I have to join the VFS waitlist for Germany?

The German missions ask applicants to register as soon as possible, and VFS says booking without registering is highly unlikely between May and September. Walk-in applies only to the family categories the missions name.

Why did I lose my slot after the email arrived?

The German missions say the notification to book is valid for 24 hours only. If you do not act within that time, the offer lapses and you may need to register again.

Which category should I book, Short Stay or Business?

Short Stay is for tourism and family visits, and Business is for work-related travel. Book the category that matches your purpose, because the wrong one can mean you are not allowed to submit on the day.

How much is the VFS Germany service fee?

The VFS Global Germany page listed AED 146.74 on 2 October 2026, alongside AED 390 for a standard adult visa. Fees follow the exchange rate and can change.

Who decides my German visa in the UAE?

The German Consulate General in Dubai decides all visa applications in the UAE, including those submitted at the Abu Dhabi centre. VFS only receives and returns your file.
