Quick answer: Yes. Algerian citizens need a Schengen visa for short stays, and legal residents of the UAE can apply here. Pick the country where you will spend the most nights, follow that country’s visa centre route for your emirate, and build a file that shows your UAE income, your ties and a realistic plan. A France or Spain trip involves different centres, so check the route before you book.

Algerians living in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi often travel to France, Spain and Italy to see relatives, attend events or take a holiday. The route from the UAE is straightforward on paper, but it depends on getting the country and centre right and on a clean, consistent file. This guide is written for Algerian passport holders with UAE residence.

Can you apply from Dubai or must you go home?

A legal UAE resident can usually apply here. You do not need to return to Algeria to lodge a Schengen application, provided your residence visa and Emirates ID are valid and will remain valid long enough after your trip. Make sure your passport has been issued within the last ten years, has free pages and is valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area. If you need to renew a passport, start that first. See passport validity and blank page rules.

France, Spain or Italy from the UAE

Because many Algerians have family links to France, it matters that France has no visa centre in Dubai. VFS lists Abu Dhabi for the whole UAE. Spain works through BLS International instead of VFS, with centres at I Rise Tower in Barsha Heights (Tecom), Dubai, and Tamouh Tower on Al Reem Island, Abu Dhabi. Italy’s Dubai centre serves only Dubai and the Northern Emirates. Choose by where you will really spend the most nights, not by which queue looks shorter.

Documents that matter for Algerian applicants

Proof of UAE ties

Bring an employer letter and NOC, or your trade licence if you own a business. See the employment letter and NOC guide and the trade licence guide.

Funds you can explain

Bank statements should show salary credits and a balance that fits the trip. Transfers from relatives should be documented. Read how bank statements are judged and why files fail for insufficient funds.

Family in Europe

If you are visiting relatives, the host usually provides an invitation and a copy of their residence status. Our host invitation guide explains the details. Your travel insurance still needs to meet the Schengen minimum, see the insurance guide.

Plan and translations

Write a short cover letter and check when documents need translating. Arabic and French documents often need a certified translation depending on the destination, so confirm the rule for your country first.

Timing, biometrics and refusals

Applications can usually be lodged up to six months before travel, and decisions can take up to 15 calendar days or more. Biometrics are collected at your first application, see what happens at biometrics, and you can follow progress with our tracking guide. If a visa is refused, check the reason in our refusal codes guide and decide whether to appeal or reapply. A refusal also matters for later applications, see how it can affect them.

Frequently asked questions

Do Algerian citizens need a Schengen visa?

Yes. Algerian passport holders need a visa for short Schengen stays.

Can I apply from the UAE instead of Algeria?

Yes, if you are a legal UAE resident with a valid residence visa and Emirates ID, and your residence will remain valid after your trip.

Where do I apply for a French visa from the UAE?

France has no visa centre in Dubai. VFS lists Abu Dhabi for the whole UAE, so plan the trip to Abu Dhabi.

Is Spain handled by VFS?

Can you guarantee my visa?

No. Only the consulate decides. We help you submit a complete, consistent and honest file, and the first consultation is free.
