Sudanese professionals, families and students are an established part of life in the UAE, and many want to visit Europe for tourism, family events, medical appointments, conferences or business. Schengen embassies treat Sudanese passport holders as visa required, and they tend to examine applications from some nationalities more closely than others. That does not make approval impossible. It means the file needs to answer the obvious questions before the officer asks them. This guide explains the practical steps for a Sudanese citizen applying from the UAE.
You apply to the Schengen country where you will spend the most nights. If you stay the same number of nights in several countries, you apply to the one you enter first. Choosing a destination only because it looks easier is a common mistake, and our guide to the visa shopping rule for UAE applicants explains why the itinerary has to match the application. Each country also has its own arrangements in the UAE: some use VFS Global, Spain uses BLS International, France has no visa centre in Dubai, and Italy’s centre in Dubai serves Dubai and the Northern Emirates. Our overview of Schengen visa centres in the UAE by country is the best place to start.
The core Schengen requirements are the same for everyone, but some documents carry extra weight for a Sudanese national who is not living in the country of nationality.
Your Sudanese passport must be valid for the period required by the Schengen rules and have blank pages. Your UAE residence permit and Emirates ID need to be valid well beyond the date you plan to return, because the embassy wants to see that you can legally come back. Read our note on residence visa validity for Schengen applications and our checklist on passport validity and blank page rules before you book.
Salaried applicants should bring an employment letter and recent payslips. Our guide to the employment letter and NOC shows what the letter should say. Business owners should follow our post on the trade licence file for company owners.
Bank statements should show a normal pattern of income and spending. A large deposit shortly before applying, with no explanation, is one of the most common triggers for doubt. If your funds look thin for the trip, read about refusals for insufficient funds before you submit.
Provide a realistic itinerary with accommodation for the whole stay and travel insurance that meets the Schengen minimum, as described in our travel insurance guide. If a relative or friend invites you, a sponsor letter should come with their status details and a clear explanation of who pays for what.
| Document | Why it matters for you | Typical weakness |
|---|---|---|
| UAE residence permit and Emirates ID | Shows lawful residence and the right to return | Close to expiry on the travel date |
| Employment letter or trade licence | Proves a stable reason to come back | Letter that does not match the form or the payslips |
| Bank statements | Shows the means to fund the trip | Sudden large deposit with no explanation |
| Itinerary and accommodation | Shows a genuine short visit | Vague plan or bookings that do not cover the stay |
| Family and ties | Shows commitments in the UAE | Family documents missing or unattested |
The officer is asking whether your stated purpose is credible, whether you can afford it, and whether you will leave the Schengen area on time. For a Sudanese resident of the UAE, the answers sit in the details. Ties in the UAE, such as a long employment history, a spouse and children living with you, a lease and consistent banking, carry more weight than a short term arrangement. If your ties are modest, say so honestly and explain what brings you back. Our posts on refusals for weak ties and refusals for an unclear purpose or itinerary show how those weaknesses appear in a real file.
If you are travelling with family, each member needs their own application and documents. Our guide to family Schengen appointments explains how to book them together, and the Schengen 90/180 calculator helps you plan the number of days correctly.
A refusal is not the end of the road, but how you respond matters. Read the reasons on the refusal form, which are explained in our guide to Schengen refusal codes. Decide whether an appeal or a new application makes more sense, using appeal or reapply, and do not resubmit the same file with the same weakness. A refusal is recorded, which is why you should also understand how a refusal affects future applications. Applicants from neighbouring countries face similar questions, and you may find our posts for Syrian and Ethiopian citizens useful for comparison.

Yes. Sudan is on the list of countries whose citizens need a visa for short stays in the Schengen area. A UAE residence permit does not remove that requirement.
Yes, you apply in the country of your legal residence. Your residence permit needs to remain valid beyond your return date, and the embassy will check it.
Usually your proof of residence, employment, bank statements and itinerary. They must agree with each other and with the application form.
A previous visa that you used properly shows that you respect the rules, so it can help, but every application is decided on its own facts.
You can apply on your own. A licensed documentation company can help you prepare and check the file, but only the embassy decides, and nobody can promise approval.
