Quick answer: Ghanaian citizens need a Schengen visa for short stays, and if you are a legal resident of the UAE you can apply here. Choose the country where you will spend the most days, apply at that country’s visa centre or consulate for the UAE, and build a file that shows funds, a clear itinerary and a stable life in the UAE that you will return to. Start early, because the visa centre that serves you depends on the country and the emirate you live in.

Ghanaian professionals, nurses, engineers, hospitality staff and students live across Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates, and many want to visit Europe for holidays, conferences, weddings or to see family. The rules are the same as for other visa required nationals, but the way the file is read can be less forgiving when documents are thin. This guide is written for UAE residents holding a Ghanaian passport. For the general process, see our Schengen visa from Dubai guide.

Do Ghanaian citizens need a Schengen visa?

Yes. Ghana is not on the visa free list for the Schengen area, so you need a short stay (Type C) visa for tourism, family visits or business trips of up to 90 days in any 180 day period. Some routes also trigger an airport transit visa requirement for Ghanaian nationals, even when you never leave the airport, so check the transit rules of any Schengen airport on your itinerary. You can plan your days with our Schengen 90/180 calculator.

Where to apply from the UAE

You apply to the country that is your main destination, meaning the one where you will spend the longest time. If you stay equally long in several countries, you apply to the country you enter first. Do not pick a country only because it looks easier, because consulates compare your itinerary with your application. The practical details differ by country, and these are the ones UAE residents trip over most often:

CountryWhat to know for UAE residents
FranceThere is no visa centre in Dubai. The official provider lists Abu Dhabi as the location for the whole UAE
SpainApplications go through BLS International, not VFS, with centres in Barsha Heights (Tecom) in Dubai and Al Reem Island in Abu Dhabi
ItalyThe centre in Dubai serves Dubai and the Northern Emirates only
GermanyA waitlist system applies, and Dubai and the Northern Emirates are separated from Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

Our post on what happens at VFS Dubai biometrics explains the appointment itself. If you are choosing between countries, the guides for neighbouring African passport holders, such as Nigerian, Kenyan and Ethiopian citizens, show how the same rules play out in practice.

Documents to prepare

Consulates publish their own lists, so always check the one for your destination. In practice the core file looks like this.

DocumentWhy it mattersTip
Ghanaian passportIdentity; must meet validity rulesValid for at least three months after you plan to leave the Schengen area, with enough blank pages
UAE residence permit and Emirates IDShows you can apply from the UAEMake sure it covers your trip and some time after. See residence visa validity for Schengen
Employment letter or NOCJob, salary and approved leaveSee our employment letter and NOC guide
Bank statementsFunds and normal income patternUsually the last three to six months. See bank statement balances
Travel insuranceRequired cover for the whole stayMeet the minimum cover. See travel insurance minimums
Accommodation and itineraryPurpose and route of the tripUse real, changeable bookings. See hotel booking proof
Cover letterExplains who you are and why you travelSee the cover letter guide

Documents issued in Ghana, such as birth or marriage certificates, may need translation into English or the language the consulate requires. Use our visa document checklist generator to build a list for your own case.

Showing ties to the UAE

Consulates assess migration risk, which means they ask whether you will leave Schengen at the end of your authorised stay. For a Ghanaian applicant living in the UAE, the answer should be visible in the file: a long running job with a letter from the employer, a lease, family or dependants who stay in the UAE, and a travel history that shows you return on time. If you have little travel history, do not hide it; our guide on applying with no travel history shows how to compensate. Weak ties and unclear funds are two of the most common refusal grounds, covered in our posts on refusals for weak ties and refusal codes.

Fees, timing and planning

There is a consular fee plus a service charge at the visa centre, and fees can change, so read our note on Schengen fees and surcharges and run your numbers in the visa cost calculator. Under the Visa Code a decision is normally taken within 15 calendar days, but it can take longer, and busy periods such as the UAE National Day and winter break rush stretch it further. Do not buy non refundable tickets before the visa is in your passport.

If the visa is refused

A refusal letter lists the reasons. Read them, fix the real gap, and either appeal where the country allows it or reapply with a stronger file. Reapplying with the same documents rarely changes the result. Our guide on reapplying after a refusal explains the timing. For UK plans, a Schengen refusal should be declared where the UK form asks about it; see our UK visa guide for Sudanese applicants for how the UK process works for a similar profile.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Ghanaian citizen living in the UAE apply for a Schengen visa in Dubai?

Yes, if you are a legal resident of the UAE. You apply to the country that is your main destination, using the visa centre or consulate that serves your emirate.

Which Schengen country should a Ghanaian applicant choose?

Choose the country where you will spend the most days. If your stay is split equally, apply to the country you enter first. Choosing a country only because it seems easier can lead to problems when the consulate compares your itinerary.

How much bank balance is needed?

There is no single universal figure. Consulates look for enough funds to cover your accommodation, daily costs and return travel for the length of your trip, shown through consistent statements over several months.

Do I need an airport transit visa as a Ghanaian citizen?

Possibly. Some Schengen countries require Ghanaian nationals to hold an airport transit visa even when they only change planes. Check the rules for every Schengen airport on your route before you book.

What if my Schengen visa is refused?

Read the refusal reasons, correct the real gap and then appeal or reapply with a stronger file. Avoid resubmitting the same documents.
