Quick answer: If you own a company or work for yourself in the UAE, you apply for the same UK Standard Visitor visa as everyone else, but you carry the burden of proving your income and your business yourself. There is no employer letter to lean on, so the file should show a live trade licence, business and personal bank statements that tell the same story, evidence that the business keeps running while you travel, and a short, honest explanation of the trip.

Freelancers, consultants, shop owners, free zone company founders and partners in family businesses make up a large share of Dubai’s working population. For the Home Office, self-employment is not a problem in itself. The difficulty is that a caseworker cannot phone your employer, so they rely entirely on what you upload. A clean, consistent file can be just as convincing as a salary letter. For the full process, see our UK visa from Dubai guide.

What the caseworker wants to see

A visit visa decision comes down to whether you are a genuine visitor, whether you can pay for the trip without working in the UK, and whether you will leave at the end. For a business owner, that translates into three questions. Is the business real and trading? Does the money in your accounts come from it? Is there a reason to come back, such as the business, a home and family? Your documents need to answer each question without leaving the reader to guess.

Documents that support a self-employed application

Our guides to UK visa bank statements and bank statement balances explain how statements are read. The Schengen equivalents, company owner trade licence and self-employed freelancers, are useful if you are also planning a European trip.

Explaining your income clearly

Self-employed income is often irregular, and that is acceptable if you explain it. If your income comes in large payments a few times a year, say so, and show the matching invoices. If you pay yourself through a mix of salary, dividends and transfers, describe how it works in two or three sentences. If you recently started the business, include evidence of what you did before, such as an earlier employment record. Avoid round figure deposits without a paper trail, as unexplained money is one of the most common reasons a caseworker loses confidence in a file.

Show that the business keeps running

One question that is easy to forget is who looks after the business while you are in the UK. A short line naming a partner, manager or accountant, together with the dates you will be away, answers it. If you plan business activity in the UK, check the official visitor rules to make sure what you intend to do is permitted on a visit visa; our post on the 8 October 2026 UK visitor rules change is a good place to start.

Mistakes that cause refusals

  • A trade licence that is expired, or about to expire, with no sign of renewal.
  • Business accounts that look as if they were topped up shortly before the application.
  • Different figures for income in the application form and the bank statements.
  • No explanation of who runs the business during the trip.
  • Previous refusals that are not declared.

If you have been refused before, read our guide to UK visit visa refusals and reapplying and the post on how refusals affect future applications before you submit again.

Process, fees and timing

You apply online, pay the fee, and attend biometrics at the UK visa application centre in the UAE. See our guides to the UK visa application centre in Dubai, the priority service and tracking your application. Fees change, so read the note on the UK visit visa fee increase and confirm the amount on GOV.UK. Use the visa cost calculator to plan the full cost of the trip.

Applicants of other nationalities follow the same logic. If you are from Sudan, see the UK visa guide for Sudanese citizens, and if you are planning Europe as well, the Schengen visa guide for Ghanaian citizens shows how destination and itinerary are matched.

Frequently asked questions

Can a self-employed person in Dubai get a UK visit visa?

Yes. Self-employment is not a barrier. You need to prove that the business is real, that your funds come from it, and that you have reasons to return to the UAE.

Which documents replace the employer letter?

A valid trade licence, company documents showing your ownership, business bank statements, invoices or contracts, and a short letter from you or your accountant explaining income and who runs the business while you travel.

How many months of bank statements do I need?

There is no single fixed rule, but around six months of personal statements, and business statements that match them, is a common and sensible approach. Check the current guidance on GOV.UK.

Does a recently started business hurt my application?

It can raise questions, but you can answer them with evidence of your earlier work, current contracts and a consistent account of how the business earns.

Can I do business in the UK on a visit visa?

Only limited activities are allowed, such as attending meetings or conferences. Check the official visitor rules before you apply, and do not plan to carry out work that the rules do not permit.
