Quick answer: Yes. Moroccan passport holders need a Schengen visa for any short stay in Europe, and as a UAE resident you can apply from here rather than from Morocco. Apply to the country where you will spend most of your trip, through its visa centre in the UAE. The EU visa fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children from 6 to under 12, and the standard decision time is 15 calendar days, which can be extended to 45.

If you hold a Moroccan passport and live in the UAE, you need a Schengen visa for a short trip to Europe, whether it is a family visit in Madrid or a holiday in Paris. You do not have to fly back to Morocco to apply. As a legal UAE resident, you apply here, through the consulate or visa centre of your main destination.

Do Moroccan citizens need a Schengen visa?

Yes. Morocco is listed in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, the EU list of countries whose nationals must hold a visa to cross the external borders of the Schengen area. The short-stay visa covers tourism, family visits and short business trips of up to 90 days in any 180 day period.

ETIAS and EES

Because you travel on a visa, ETIAS does not apply to you. ETIAS is only for visa-exempt travellers, and it has no confirmed start date yet. What does apply to you is the Entry/Exit System (EES), which the European Commission says has been fully operational across all Schengen countries since 10 April 2026. At the border your passport details, facial image and fingerprints are recorded, and your entry and exit are logged electronically.

What your UAE residence changes, and what it does not

Your UAE residence visa is what allows you to apply from here, and most consulates expect it to stay valid well beyond your return date. If it is close to renewal, renew first and apply second. It does not change the visa requirement or the fee, and the file is judged on your life in the UAE: your job, income, home and reasons to come back.

Which country do you apply to?

Under Article 5 of the Visa Code, you apply to the country that is the main destination of your trip, judged by the length or purpose of the stay. If you cannot identify a main destination, you apply to the country whose external border you will cross first.

Main destinationWhere you apply in the UAE
FranceFrance-Visas states that all applications are processed by the consular section in Abu Dhabi and lodged at the VFS Global centre in Abu Dhabi, including for residents of Dubai and the northern emirates. The French consulate in Dubai has had no visa section since 2019. See our France visa page.
SpainBLS International is the outsourced partner of the Embassy of Spain in the UAE. See our Spain visa page.
ItalySplit by emirate. The Consulate General in Dubai covers Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain through VFS Global. The Embassy in Abu Dhabi covers the emirate of Abu Dhabi through BLS International.
Most other Schengen statesUsually VFS Global. Check the consulate’s own page before booking, because arrangements can change.

Documents Moroccan applicants should prepare

The core set is the same for every nationality. Our full Schengen documents checklist walks through each item.

  1. Moroccan passport issued within the previous 10 years, valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, with at least two blank pages.
  2. UAE residence visa and Emirates ID.
  3. Completed application form and a recent photo to the consulate’s specification.
  4. Travel medical insurance covering emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation, with minimum cover of EUR 30,000.
  5. Flight reservation and hotel booking, or an invitation if you are staying with family.
  6. Salary certificate or no objection letter from your employer, or company documents if you own a business.
  7. Personal bank statements for the period the consulate asks for. See our bank statement guide.
  8. A short cover letter explaining the purpose of the trip and your plans to return.

Extra items that often help a Moroccan file

  • An invitation from relatives in Europe, with a copy of their residence card or passport and proof of their address.
  • The attestation d’accueil for France. If a relative is hosting you in France on a private visit, the French government says your host must request this certificate in person at the town hall where you will stay, and it must be validated before you apply. It costs EUR 30 in tax stamps, and if the town hall does not reply within one month the request counts as refused, so ask your host to start early.
  • Previous visas for Europe, the UK or the US. If you are also planning a UK trip, see our guide for Moroccan citizens applying for a UK visa from the UAE.

Fees and timings

  • Visa fee: EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children from 6 to under 12, according to the European Commission. Under the Visa Code, children under six do not pay the visa fee. The visa centre adds its own service charge on top.
  • When to apply: no earlier than six months and, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before travel. Apply early for summer, Eid and school holiday trips.
  • Decision time: the Visa Code sets 15 calendar days from the date an admissible application is lodged. This can be extended to a maximum of 45 calendar days in individual cases, for example when further scrutiny is needed.
  • Prior consultation: Morocco appears on the EU list of nationalities for which at least one Schengen state requires prior consultation of its central authorities (Article 22 of the Visa Code). The consulted authorities have seven calendar days to reply. This is a routine step, not a sign of a problem, but leave a margin before your travel date.

A note on connecting flights

Morocco is not on the EU common list of nationalities that need an airport transit visa. However, the European Commission’s list of national transit requirements shows that Romania requires one from Moroccan nationals passing through its airports. Exemptions exist, for example for holders of a valid Schengen visa, so if your routing connects through a Schengen airport without a Schengen visa, confirm the rule with your airline and the relevant consulate before you book.

Step by step from the UAE

  1. Confirm your main destination and the centre that handles it for your emirate.
  2. Check your passport and residence visa validity, then gather and review your documents.
  3. Book your appointment and attend in person. Under Article 13 of the Visa Code, fingerprints taken for an earlier Schengen application less than 59 months before can be reused, and children under 12 are exempt.
  4. Track the application and collect your passport.

Where Moroccan applicants usually lose time

  • Applying to the wrong country. A family visit of ten days in Spain with two days in France is a Spanish application. A consulate that is not competent for your trip will not examine the file.
  • Thin UAE ties. A recent job change, a lease about to end or a residence visa near expiry weakens the file. Explain any recent change in your cover letter.
  • Bank statements that do not tell a story. Large recent deposits with no explanation raise questions. Keep salary credits visible and explain any exceptional transfer.
  • Booking too late. Applying at the 15 day limit leaves no margin for an extension.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply from Dubai if my Moroccan passport was issued in Morocco?

Yes. Where the passport was issued does not matter. What matters is that you legally reside in the UAE and apply through the consulate or visa centre responsible for your main destination and emirate.

Do Moroccan citizens need ETIAS?

No. ETIAS is for visa-exempt travellers and has no confirmed start date. Moroccan citizens need a Schengen visa instead, and the EES border registration applies to them.

How much is the Schengen visa fee for Moroccans applying in the UAE?

EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children from 6 to under 12. Children under six do not pay the visa fee. The visa centre charges its own service fee on top.

How long does a decision take?

The standard period is 15 calendar days from the date your application is lodged, and it can be extended to a maximum of 45 calendar days in individual cases.

I am visiting family in France. Where do I apply?

At the VFS Global centre in Abu Dhabi, which handles French applications for residents of every emirate. Your host may also need to obtain an attestation d’accueil from their town hall before you apply.
