Quick answer: Most Schengen, UK and US visa authorities in the UAE require any supporting document that is not already in English (or, for some Schengen consulates, their own national language) to be accompanied by a certified translation. Arabic-only documents such as marriage certificates, court papers or older trade licences are the ones that most often catch UAE-based applicants out. Use a recognised legal translator, not a casual translation, and keep the original alongside the translated copy.

A surprising number of visa applications from Dubai get delayed or queried not because of income or ties, but because a document was submitted in the wrong language, or with a translation that was not properly certified. This guide explains when translation is actually required, which documents commonly need it, and how to get it done properly.

When translation is required

The general rule across almost every consulate and visa authority operating in the UAE is simple: any document not in English, or not in the destination country’s official language where that consulate specifically requires it, needs a certified translation attached. Because the UAE issues many official documents bilingually in Arabic and English, applicants often assume everything is covered. It is not. Documents such as marriage certificates, birth certificates, divorce decrees, court judgments, police reports and some older commercial licences are frequently issued in Arabic only, and these are exactly the documents most likely to appear in a visa file.

Documents that most often need translation

DocumentWhy it is often Arabic-only
Marriage or divorce certificateUAE court-issued civil documents are commonly Arabic-only
Birth certificate (if UAE-issued)Local issuance varies by emirate and authority
Trade licence or company documentsOlder licences and some free zone documents may be Arabic-only
Police clearance certificateUAE police certificates are typically issued in Arabic, with an English version sometimes available on request
Court letters or judgmentsAlmost always Arabic-only in original form

By contrast, documents most UAE banks and employers issue as standard, such as bank statements, salary certificates and employment letters, are usually available in English on request and rarely need separate translation if you ask your bank or HR department for the English version directly.

What counts as a valid certified translation

A certified translation is not simply a document translated by a bilingual friend or colleague. Consulates and visa authorities expect a translation carried out by a translator or translation office that is legally recognised, commonly one licensed by the UAE Ministry of Justice, with a stamp, signature and a statement confirming the translation is accurate and complete. Some consulates additionally want the translation notarised or attested. Requirements differ by country and even by consulate, so check the specific instructions for your destination before you pay for translation work, ideally using our visa document checklist generator to confirm what applies to your case.

Do Schengen countries all require the same thing?

No. Some Schengen consulates in the UAE accept documents in English without a separate translation into their own national language, while others are stricter and expect translation into that country’s language specifically, particularly for documents like court papers. This varies enough between consulates that a document set accepted for one country’s application is not automatically acceptable for another. If you are applying to more than one country over time, do not assume your existing translations transfer without checking first.

What happens if you submit an untranslated or poorly translated document

At best, an untranslated Arabic document is simply ignored by the visa officer reviewing your file, which weakens your application if that document was meant to support your case, such as proving marital status or a clean police record. At worst, it triggers a request for additional documents, which adds weeks to your processing time and pushes your total visa cost up with reissued appointments, or contributes to a refusal where the missing evidence was material to the decision. Combined with common issues like a name mismatch between your passport and other documents, an incomplete or improperly translated file is one of the most avoidable causes of delay we see.

Practical steps

  • List every document in your application and check its original language before you start compiling your file.
  • Confirm your destination consulate’s specific translation and certification requirements; do not assume they match another country’s rules.
  • Use a UAE Ministry of Justice licensed legal translator for anything court-issued, civil status related, or official.
  • Submit both the original document and the certified translation together, not the translation alone.
  • Ask your bank, employer or company for an English-language version of routine documents like statements and salary certificates before assuming you need a separate translation.
  • Check your passport’s own validity and remaining pages alongside your documents; our passport travel index is a useful starting point for cross-border planning.

How this fits into your wider application

Translation is one piece of a document set that also needs to be internally consistent: your bank statements and balances, your employment or self-employment documents, and your travel insurance all need to tell the same, accurate story about who you are and why you are travelling. A perfectly translated marriage certificate will not save an application where the financial documents are weak; treat translation as one item on a longer checklist, not a fix on its own.

How Visa Doctor helps

We review every document in your file before submission, flag anything that needs certified translation, and coordinate with licensed legal translators in Dubai so nothing holds up your appointment or triggers an avoidable request for more paperwork. Run your file through our document checklist generator and approval chance calculator first, then talk to us if you are not sure whether something needs translating. This applies whether you are applying to the UK, the US, or anywhere in the Schengen area.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to translate my UAE bank statements for a visa application?

Usually not. Most UAE banks issue statements in English on request, so ask your bank for the English version rather than arranging a separate translation.

Who is allowed to certify a translation for a visa application?

Consulates generally expect translations from a recognised, legally licensed translator or translation office, commonly one licensed by the UAE Ministry of Justice. A translation from an unlicensed individual, even if accurate, may not be accepted.

Does my marriage certificate need translating if I am applying with my spouse?

If it was issued in Arabic only, most consulates will expect a certified English translation, particularly where marital status affects your application, such as sponsorship or dependant visas. Confirm the specific requirement with your destination consulate.

Can I translate documents myself if I am fluent in both languages?

No. Consulates require independent, certified translations, not self-translations, regardless of how fluent you are.

Do translated documents need to be notarised as well as certified?

Sometimes. Requirements vary by country and consulate, so check the specific instructions for your destination before arranging translation, since notarisation adds time and cost you may not need.
