Canada Visitor Visa for Indian Citizens in the UAE: How to Apply From Dubai

Canada is one of the most requested long-haul destinations among Indian families in Dubai and Abu Dhabi: visiting relatives in Toronto or Vancouver, university tours, business trips and holidays. The process is fully online, but it has more steps than a Schengen or UK application, and refusals are common when the file does not clearly show ties to the UAE. This guide walks through the process from the UAE, the real fees, the documents that matter, and how to avoid the most frequent refusal reasons.

Do Indian citizens in the UAE need a visa for Canada?

Yes. Indian passport holders need a visitor visa, officially called a temporary resident visa (TRV), to visit Canada. India is not one of the visa exempt countries that use the electronic travel authorisation (eTA), and living in the UAE does not change that. Your UAE residence does, however, determine where you give biometrics and how the officer reads your ties.

Step by step: applying from Dubai or Abu Dhabi

1. Create an IRCC secure account and complete the online visitor visa application. Most applicants outside Canada must apply online.
2. Upload your documents (see the checklist below). Clear scans, English or French translations where needed.
3. Pay the fees online: the visa fee and the biometrics fee together.
4. Receive your Biometric Instruction Letter, then book an appointment with VFS Global Canada in the UAE. The Dubai centre is at Wafi Mall; check VFS for current locations and hours across the UAE.
5. Give biometrics (fingerprints and photo). If you gave Canadian biometrics in the last ten years, you may not need to again; your IRCC account will tell you.
6. Wait for a decision. If approved, you receive a passport request and submit your passport through VFS so the visa counterfoil can be placed in it.

Documents Indian applicants in the UAE should prepare

• Passport valid for your whole stay, plus copies of previous visas (US, UK, Schengen, Australia) and travel history. If your Indian passport is due for renewal, sort that out first; see Indian passport renewal and visa applications.

• Employment letter or salary certificate with job title, start date, salary and approved leave dates. Business owners should add a trade licence.
• Bank statements, usually for several months, showing regular income and enough funds for the trip. Canada does not publish a fixed minimum balance; the officer looks at whether the trip is affordable for you. See how visa officers read bank statements.
• Purpose documents: an invitation letter from family in Canada with their status document, hotel bookings for tourism, or a business invitation.
• Family ties: marriage and birth certificates if travelling as a family, and evidence of dependants staying in the UAE if relevant. Translate anything not in English or French (see document translation for visa applications).

Processing times and when to apply

IRCC publishes processing time estimates that change regularly and depend on where you apply from. We do not quote a fixed number because it moves week to week. Check the official IRCC processing times tool when you are ready to apply, add time for the biometrics appointment and passport stamping, and avoid booking non-refundable flights before the visa is in your passport. Why Canada visitor visas get refused

Most refusals say the officer is not satisfied you will leave Canada at the end of your stay, often citing family ties in Canada, the purpose of visit, or your financial situation. For Indian applicants in the UAE, the usual weak points are:

• A UAE job or residence that looks short-term or close to expiry.
• Close family in Canada and little evidence of family or property commitments in the UAE or India.
• Large unexplained deposits in the bank statement shortly before applying.
• A vague purpose or a trip length that does not match your leave.

Single or multiple entry, and how long you can stay

You apply for a visitor visa and the officer decides the validity and number of entries. Multiple entry is not automatic, so do not assume a long visa. On arrival, the border officer decides how long you may stay, commonly up to six months. Parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents can also look at the super visa, which allows longer stays but has extra insurance and host income requirements.
