The State Department’s start page estimates about 90 minutes to complete the DS-160. For UAE residents, most problems come from local details: picking the right post, entering a UAE address and employer correctly, and keeping the barcode in line with the appointment. Visa Doctor fills the DS-160 for its clients, but if you prefer to do it yourself, this guide walks you through it.
This guide is part of our main US visa from Dubai guide, which covers the full B1/B2 process, documents, fees and appointment booking for UAE residents.
The DS-160 is the online application for every US nonimmigrant visa, including B1/B2 visitor and F-1 student visas. Every applicant, including children, needs their own form.
It is completed on the Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC). The UAE scheduling site says you need the confirmation page barcode to book your interview, and paper applications are not accepted. The visa fee is paid separately, in the scheduling system.
Gather everything first, because the form will time out if you stop to look for documents. The DS-160 FAQs and the UAE pages point to this list:
On the CEAC start page, select the post where you will be interviewed, then choose “START AN APPLICATION”. In the UAE the options are “UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, ABU DHABI” and “UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, DUBAI”.
Choose carefully. The UAE scheduling site says the post you select on the DS-160 must be the same post where you book your interview. You can book at either post whichever emirate you live in, so decide first; our comparison of whether Dubai or Abu Dhabi is faster helps with that.
An Application ID appears in the top right corner of the page. Write it down, and choose a security question you will remember; you need both to return to the form. CEAC warns that it times out after 20 minutes of inactivity and unsaved work is lost. Completed pages save automatically, and “Save Application to File” keeps a copy on your computer. Avoid shared computers, and use the buttons at the bottom of the form rather than your browser’s back button.
The form runs through personal details, travel, travel companions, previous US travel, address and phone, passport, US contact, family, work and education, security and background, photo, and finally review, sign and submit. All answers must be in English, using English characters, except the field for your full name in your native alphabet.
| Section | What it asks | UAE tip |
|---|---|---|
| Personal | Names, other names used, sex, date and place of birth, nationalities, national ID | Enter names exactly as in your passport (FNU if there is no given name) and list every current and former nationality. The FAQs define a permanent resident as someone allowed to live and work in a country without a time limit, so answer on your actual status, not simply because you live in Dubai. |
| Travel and companions | Purpose, dates, US address, who pays, who travels with you | Keep dates and purpose consistent with what you will say at interview. Family members each need their own DS-160 even if they travel with you. |
| Previous US travel | Past visits, visas, refusals | Declare previous refusals honestly. Leaving one out is a misrepresentation risk and does far more damage than the refusal itself. |
| Address and phone | Home address, primary phone, email, social media | Use your UAE home address and your +971 mobile as the primary number. Many UAE addresses have no postcode; where a field offers “Does Not Apply”, use it rather than inventing a number. List social media handles honestly; see our social media check guide. |
| Passport | Passport number, book number, issue and expiry | Enter the passport you will travel on. The passport book number is also called the inventory control number; if you cannot find it, the FAQs suggest asking the authority that issued your passport. |
| US contact and family | A person or organisation in the US, parents, spouse | Follow the help text on screen if you do not know anyone in the US. Spell family names consistently with their own documents. |
| Work, education and training | Current employer, previous two employers, education | Use your employer’s name as it appears on your employment documents, and a job title that matches your salary certificate or employer letter. Business owners should match the trade licence. |
| Security and background | Yes or no questions on health, criminal history and immigration | Read each question slowly. The FAQs warn that false or misleading answers can lead to a permanent refusal. |
You upload a digital photo inside the form, and it must meet the State Department’s requirements.
The digital image rules say the photo must be square, at least 600 x 600 pixels and no more than 1200 x 1200 pixels, in colour, in JPEG format and no larger than 240 kB. The UAE scheduling site says it must have been taken within the last six months, and since 2016 eyeglasses must not be worn in visa photos except in rare medical cases. If the upload works, your photo appears on the confirmation page; if it fails, the FAQs say to bring one compliant printed photo with your confirmation page. An accepted upload can still be rejected later.
At the end you review every page, then sign electronically by clicking “Sign Application”. The CEAC start page says that under US law (22 CFR 41.103) you must sign and submit your own application unless an exemption applies, even if someone else helped you fill it in.
The FAQs say that when an applicant has to be assisted by someone else, that person must be identified on the “Sign and Submit” page. For applicants under 16 or physically unable to sign, a parent or guardian may click the button for them. After submission you get a confirmation page with an alphanumeric barcode. Print it (not the full application) and email yourself a backup copy. Bring it to every stage, and make sure its barcode matches the one used to book your appointment, or you will not be allowed to attend.
Unsubmitted forms stay on the system for 30 days. After that, you can only continue from a file you saved to your computer.
To come back to a form, select your post on the start page, choose “RETRIEVE AN APPLICATION”, and enter your Application ID and security answer. The form reopens at the last page you completed. After 30 days, use “Upload a Previously Saved Application” with your saved file. The retrieve option also reprints a lost confirmation page.
Once a DS-160 is submitted it cannot be changed. The fix is a new DS-160 and an update to your appointment.
Fill in a fresh form with the correct details, submit it, and then update the confirmation number on your UAE appointment, because the barcode on the day must match the booking. The steps, including when you need to cancel and rebook, are in our guide to changing the DS-160 confirmation number on your UAE appointment.
We collect your details, fill in the DS-160 for you, and check every answer against your passport, employment papers and travel history before anything is submitted. You then review the form and click “Sign Application” yourself, as the law requires, and any question about who helped prepare it is answered truthfully. We also prepare you for the interview with our US visa interview preparation and book and monitor your appointment: appointments in 7 working days, agreed in writing, fee refunded if missed. The visa decision always belongs to the consular officer. If you are still looking for a date, read how to get an earlier US visa appointment in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Yes. The CEAC start page says other people can assist you, but you must click “Sign Application” yourself unless an exemption applies, such as a parent signing for a child under 16.
The CEAC start page estimates about 90 minutes. Allow longer if you have several previous visits, employers or nationalities to enter.
Go to ceac.state.gov/genniv, select your post, choose “RETRIEVE AN APPLICATION” and enter your Application ID and security answer. Unsubmitted forms are kept for 30 days.
