We secure appointments from 7 days, with your documents prepared and checked beforehand so the slot holds. The appointment is what we arrange. The visa decision belongs to the consulate.

Austria is one of the more particular Schengen states to apply to from the UAE, and the reason is not the paperwork volume. It is who is allowed to apply at all. The Austrian Embassy in Abu Dhabi accepts applications only from people who hold a valid UAE residence permit. If you are in the country on a visit visa, Austria will not take your application here, whatever any agency tells you.

Everything below comes from the Austrian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and from the official Austria Visa Application Centre, checked on 21 August 2026. Sources are listed at the end.

Who handles Austrian visas in the UAE

Austria has outsourced its visa intake to VFS Global, with Austria Visa Application Centres in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Those are the only two. There is no centre in Sharjah or the northern emirates.

The distinction that matters: VFS takes the file, the embassy decides it. Austria keeps one mission in the UAE, the Embassy in Abu Dhabi on Reem Island, and there is no Austrian consulate in Dubai. So a Dubai applicant submits in Dubai and waits on a decision taken in Abu Dhabi. Nobody at the centre can influence that decision, and no service can.

You have to attend in person. That applies to children of any age and to groups, so a family of four is four appointments, not one.

What it costs

ItemAmountPaid to
Consular fee, adult and children over 12EUR 90, charged as AED 386Austria
Consular fee, children 6 to 12EUR 45, charged as AED 193Austria
Consular fee, children under 6FreeAustria
Visa centre service chargeAED 122.66 per applicationVFS Global

A reduced band of AED 150 applies to nationals of several countries covered by visa facilitation agreements, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cape Verde and Ukraine. The consular fee is payable when you lodge the application and is not returned if the visa is refused. That is worth saying plainly, because a refusal costs you the fee as well as the trip.

Three Austrian rules that catch people out

These are the ones we see cause problems, and they are more demanding than the general Schengen pattern in this market.

Ten years of residence history. The checklist asks for copies of every UAE residence permit you have held in the past ten years, not simply the one in your passport now. If you have changed employer three times since 2016, that is three old permits to find. Start looking before you book anything.

Business travel needs an Austrian invitation. Austria will only accept a business application if it comes with an invitation from the Austrian company you are visiting. A letter from your own employer explaining the purpose is not a substitute.

Domestic staff need Austria’s own declaration. If you are travelling with a housemaid or driver, Austria publishes a specific bilingual declaration the sponsor signs, confirming that no work conflicting with Austrian labour law will be done during the stay and accepting financial responsibility for the trip. Families discover this at the counter and lose the appointment.

Documents

The published checklist for a short stay, whether tourism or business:

  • Completed and signed application form. Minors also need parental authorisation and copies of both parents’ passports.
  • Passport valid at least three months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area, issued within the past ten years, with at least two blank pages, signed by you. Plus a copy, and copies of previous Schengen visas showing entry and exit stamps.
  • UAE residence permit valid at least three months beyond the visa you are asking for, plus copies of all permits held in the past ten years, plus your Emirates ID.
  • Two photographs taken within the last six months, to Austrian criteria.
  • Confirmed flight booking with the full itinerary, and accommodation confirmation.
  • Travel insurance covering the whole trip with a minimum of EUR 30,000 in medical cover.
  • Employer no objection certificate stating your role, salary, leave dates and date of return, dated within one month. Austria publishes a model letter and following it avoids a rejection on wording.
  • Original personal bank statement showing three months of salary credits, signed and stamped by the bank.
  • Students add a school or university no objection certificate and proof of enrolment.

Every document must be in German or English. Anything in another language needs translating before you go.

Timing

You can lodge an application up to six months before you travel, and as a rule no later than fifteen calendar days before. The embassy states that a Schengen application can take fifteen to forty-five calendar days to process, and it currently warns of longer processing times and asks applicants to apply early.

Read that warning as an instruction rather than a formality. Six months ahead is not cautious for Austria at the moment, it is sensible, particularly for the ski season when demand from this market is at its highest.

One practical relief: if you need your passport while the application is being processed, VFS can hand it back to you after the file has gone to the embassy.

Should you be applying to Austria at all

If Austria is your only destination, yes. If you are combining it with Germany or Italy, the Schengen rules decide for you rather than you choosing. You apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If no single country dominates, you apply to the one whose border you will cross first to enter the Schengen area.

Getting this wrong is a common reason for refusal, and it is entirely avoidable. Count the nights before you book the appointment, not after.

If you gave fingerprints for a Schengen visa within the past fifty-nine months, EU law allows them to be reused rather than collected again. Whether that removes your appointment in practice is decided at the centre, so do not plan around it.

What we do

We check your file against the current Austrian checklist before it goes anywhere, including the ten years of residence permits and the wording of your employer letter, and we book the appointment. Schengen appointments through us start from seven days.

What we cannot do, and what nobody can do, is change how long the embassy takes or how it decides. Austria decides Austrian visas. Anyone promising you an approval is selling something they do not control. You are also free to do all of this yourself, directly with VFS Global, at no cost beyond the official fees.

Common questions

Can I apply for an Austrian visa on a UAE visit visa?

No. The Austrian Embassy accepts applications only from holders of a valid UAE residence permit. You would need to apply in your country of residence or nationality instead.

Where do I submit, Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Either. There are Austria Visa Application Centres in both. The decision is taken by the embassy in Abu Dhabi regardless of where you lodge it.

How much is an Austrian Schengen visa from Dubai?

AED 386 for adults and children over twelve, AED 193 for children six to twelve, free below six, plus the VFS service charge of AED 122.66 per application.

How long does it take?

The embassy states fifteen to forty-five calendar days, and currently warns that processing is taking longer than usual. Apply as early as you can, which is six months before travel.

Do my children need to come to the appointment?

Yes. Austria requires applications to be lodged in person, and that includes children of any age.

How much travel insurance do I need?

A minimum of EUR 30,000 in medical cover, valid for the whole period of travel.

Can I get my passport back while I wait?

Yes. Once the application has been passed to the embassy, VFS can return your passport if you need it.
