Quick answer: Australia raised its visa application charges on 1 July 2026. The Visitor visa (subclass 600) tourist stream now costs AUD 250 when you apply from outside Australia, up from AUD 200. The business visitor and sponsored family streams are also AUD 250. The charge is per applicant, it is not refunded if you are refused, and it applies to every application lodged on or after 1 July 2026. Applications validly lodged before that date kept the old price.

What changed on 1 July 2026

Australia reviews its visa application charges every financial year and the new figures take effect on 1 July. This year the jump was bigger than usual. The base application charge for the Visitor visa (subclass 600) tourist stream, which is the visa almost every UAE resident uses for a holiday or to see family in Australia, moved from AUD 200 to AUD 250 for applications lodged outside Australia. That is a 25 percent increase in one step.

The date that decides your price is the date you lodge and pay, not the date you travel and not the date your visa is decided. If you validly lodged and paid in June 2026, you paid the old charge even if the grant letter arrived in August. If you lodge today, you pay the new charge. There is no top up invoice and no refund of the difference in either direction.

Australia does not publish these charges through a consulate in Dubai, so there is no local announcement to watch for. The figures live on the Department of Home Affairs visa pricing table and change quietly. That is why UAE residents often find out at the payment screen.

These are the base application charges published by the Australian Department of Home Affairs. Additional applicant charges apply when family members are included in one application, and concessions exist in limited circumstances. Always confirm your own figure on the official Visa Pricing Estimator before you pay.

What the AUD 250 does not cover

The application charge is the government fee for assessing your case. It is only part of what an Australian trip costs before you fly. Depending on your profile you may also pay for biometrics at the visa application centre, a health examination at an approved panel clinic in the UAE if one is requested, a police clearance certificate, certified translations, and courier or photocopying at the centre. Your bank will also add a foreign currency margin, because the charge is set in Australian dollars and billed in Australian dollars.

If you are comparing Australia against other long haul options, put the full picture side by side rather than the headline fee. Our travel budget calculator and the wider free visa tools are built for exactly that comparison, and the passport travel index shows you where your own passport goes without a visa at all.

Who this actually affects in the UAE

Australia is a family destination for the Emirates, not just a holiday one. Large Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Sri Lankan, Lebanese and British communities here have relatives who settled in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, and those trips are usually booked as a whole household. A family of four now pays AUD 200 more than the same family paid in June, before anyone has bought a ticket.

The second group affected is UAE based business travellers. The business visitor stream sits at the same AUD 250, so a company sending three people to a trade show in Melbourne absorbs the increase three times. If your employer reimburses visa costs, update the expected figure in your travel policy now rather than at claim time.

How you apply for an Australian visitor visa from the UAE

Australia does not work the way Schengen does, and this surprises people. There is no consulate appointment where you hand over a folder of original papers. You create an ImmiAccount, complete the visitor visa form online, upload your supporting documents as PDF files, and pay by card. You may then be asked to attend an Australian Visa Application Centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, run by VFS Global, to give fingerprints and a photograph. The decision arrives by email.

That difference matters more than it sounds. Because there is no interview and usually no face to face submission, the documents you upload are the entire case. A case officer you will never meet reads your file once and decides. There is no chance to explain a gap in your bank statement or a confusing itinerary afterwards. Compare that with the Schengen process, where UAE residents currently spend most of their energy simply finding an appointment slot before they even think about the file itself.

What a strong Australian file from Dubai usually contains: a passport with comfortable validity, your Emirates ID and UAE residence visa, evidence of your job or business, statements that show the trip is affordable without draining your account, a clear itinerary, and where relevant an invitation from your relatives in Australia with their own status documents. Our visa document checklist generator builds the list for your exact situation, and these two guides carry over almost unchanged: what your bank statements need to show and how to word an employment letter or NOC. If you run your own company here, read the self employed and freelancer guide for how to present a trade licence properly.

One more point that catches people out. Australia asks you to declare previous visa refusals from any country. A past Schengen or UK refusal is not automatically fatal, but hiding it is. If that applies to you, read what your refusal code actually meant and whether to appeal or reapply before you fill in the Australian form.

Should you apply now or wait

There is no cheaper window ahead. Australian charges are reviewed upward each financial year, so waiting only risks paying more at the next review. The sensible move is to apply when your plans are real enough to document: dates you can defend, accommodation you can evidence, and money that has been in the account long enough to look like yours. Our visa approval chance calculator gives you a blunt read on how your profile looks before you spend the AUD 250.

For processing times, use the official Australian processing time guide rather than what a forum told you. Times move with demand and with the completeness of your own file, and a case that triggers a health examination or a request for more information will always take longer than the headline range.

Two document questions come up on almost every long haul application we handle, and the answers are worth reading before you upload anything: what accommodation proof actually has to show, and when you have to give fingerprints again. Both are written for Schengen, where the rules are strictest, and the thinking transfers directly to Australia.

How Visa Doctor helps

We are a Dubai based documentation team, not an agent that simply forwards your papers. For Australia we review your file before it is uploaded, tell you where it is weak, rewrite the covering letter and sponsor letter so the case officer can follow it, and format your statements and employment evidence the way an assessor expects to read them. Because Australia gives you one silent shot, the pre submission review is where the value sits.

We also say no. If your profile is not ready and the AUD 250 would likely be wasted, we tell you that at the free consultation and suggest what to fix first. See our Australia visa service or read how to choose a visa agency in Dubai if you are still deciding who to work with.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Australian visa application charge refundable if I am refused?

No. The charge pays for the assessment, not for a successful outcome. If your visitor visa is refused you do not get the money back, and a fresh application means paying the charge again. That is the main reason to get the file right the first time.

I lodged in June 2026. Do I have to pay the difference?

No. The charge is fixed at the moment you validly lodge and pay. An application correctly lodged before 1 July 2026 stays on the old charge even if it is decided months later.

Do children pay the full amount?

Not necessarily. Australia charges a base application charge for the main applicant and separate additional applicant charges for family members included in the same application, and those amounts differ from the base figure. Check your exact total on the official Visa Pricing Estimator before you pay.

Do I have to give fingerprints in Dubai for an Australian visa?

In many cases yes. After you lodge online you may be asked to attend an Australian Visa Application Centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi to provide fingerprints and a photograph. You will be told inside your ImmiAccount if this applies to you, so do not book one in advance.

Can I pay the fee in dirhams?

The charge is set and billed in Australian dollars. Your UAE card will be converted at your bank rate and may carry a foreign transaction fee, so the dirham amount that leaves your account will be slightly more than a straight conversion of AUD 250.
