US B1/B2 and student visas from Dubai
The official calendar shows about 10 months for a US visa interview in Dubai. We take that wait down to about 7 working days: we watch every appointment release, book the earliest confirmed date we can reach, and prepare your DS-160 and supporting file so the slot is not wasted.

Many Nepali professionals, hospitality staff, engineers, nurses and business owners live and work in the UAE, and a large share of them want to visit the United States for family, tourism, a wedding, a graduation or a conference. The process is the same for every nationality, but the way an officer reads your situation is not. This guide explains how a Nepali citizen with a UAE residence visa should approach a US visitor visa application, what the interview is really testing, and where applicants most often go wrong.
US visa interviews for UAE residents take place at the US Consulate General in Dubai or the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi. You book through the official US visa scheduling system, and you choose the post that suits your emirate and the dates on offer. If you are unsure which one moves faster, our guide to Dubai versus Abu Dhabi for US visa appointments explains the trade offs. You can also read our wider United States visa page for the service overview.
Because you are a Nepali national living in the UAE, the officer will look at two things at once: your Nepali passport and your standing in the UAE. A valid residence visa and Emirates ID show that you are a lawful resident here, but they do not on their own prove you will return. The strength of your case comes from the reasons you have to come back.
The DS-160 is the online nonimmigrant visa application. Answer every question truthfully and consistently with your passport, your employment records and any previous travel. Small mistakes, such as a wrong job title or an unexplained gap, create doubt at the interview. Our walkthrough on how to fill the DS-160 from the UAE covers the fields that cause the most trouble, and you should keep the confirmation page, because every later step depends on that number.
The visa application fee is set by the US government and can change, so check the amount on the official US visa information page for the UAE rather than relying on an old blog post. If your profile or DS-160 number needs correcting later, see account recovery and profile changes and changing a DS-160 number on an appointment.
US policy now expects most first time visitor applicants to attend an interview. Arrive with your passport, appointment confirmation, DS-160 confirmation page and a small, organised set of supporting documents. Electronics and large bags are restricted at the consulate, so check the entry rules on the appointment letter.
A US visitor visa is refused under section 214(b) when the officer is not satisfied that you intend to stay temporarily. For a Nepali resident in the UAE this usually comes down to four questions. Why this trip, why now, who is paying, and why would you leave the United States on time. Our guide to 214(b) refusals explained for UAE applicants goes deeper, and the same logic applies whether you are Nepali, Bangladeshi or from any other country, as you can see in our post for Bangladeshi citizens applying from Dubai.
| Area | What helps | What hurts |
|---|---|---|
| Employment | Salary certificate or employment letter, several months of payslips, a stable role in the UAE | A very recent job change, vague job title, letter that does not match the DS-160 |
| Finances | Bank statements that show regular income and savings that fit the trip | A large last minute deposit with no explanation |
| Family ties | Spouse, children or parents who remain in the UAE or Nepal | Travelling alone with every family member already in the United States and no reason to return |
| Travel history | Previous trips that you returned from on time | Long unexplained gaps, past overstays or inconsistent dates |
| Trip purpose | A clear plan, dates and an honest answer about who you will visit | Changing the story between the form and the interview |
The interview is short, so you rarely hand over a whole file, but you should have your documents ready in case the officer asks. A sensible set includes your Nepali passport and any old passports, your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, an employment or salary letter, recent bank statements, proof of family ties, and an honest explanation of the trip with dates. If a relative in the United States is hosting you, bring their status details only if they are relevant, and answer questions about them calmly and accurately. You can use our visa document checklist generator to build a list that matches your situation, and the visa cost calculator to plan the budget for fees and travel.
The first mistake is arriving with a thick folder of unrelated papers and no clear answer to the question, why are you going. The second is copying an answer from a friend. Officers hear the same rehearsed script dozens of times in a day and quickly notice when an answer does not fit the applicant. The third is hiding or minimising earlier refusals, which is far more damaging than the refusal itself. If you have been refused before, read what to do after a visa refusal and how a refusal affects future applications, and only reapply when something real has changed in your circumstances.
A fourth mistake is assuming that approval for another country predicts the US result. A Schengen or UK visa history can help a little by showing that you travel and return, which you can read about in our guides for Nepali citizens applying for Schengen and Nepali citizens applying for a UK visa, but each embassy decides independently. You can also try our visa approval chance calculator for a rough sense of which parts of your profile to strengthen, while remembering that no tool or agent can promise a decision.

Yes, if you are lawfully resident in the UAE you can book an interview at the US Consulate General in Dubai or the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi. Check the official scheduling site for the current rules before you pay anything.
Not necessarily. Many applicants pay for their own trip. If someone else is paying, be ready to explain the relationship and show that person’s ability to cover the costs.
No. It shows that you live in the UAE, but the officer still has to be satisfied that you will return after a temporary visit. Your job, family and finances in the UAE all matter.
There is no fixed number in the officer’s checklist, but a residence visa with very little time left can weaken your case. Renew it first if it is close to expiring.
Read the refusal carefully, do not reapply immediately with the same facts, and wait until something material has changed, such as a new job, new family circumstances or stronger travel history.
