Quick answer: You cannot apply for a UK visa at the British Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the British Embassy in Dubai, because neither provides visas. UK visa applications from the UAE are made online on GOV.UK, and you then attend a UK visa application centre run by VFS Global, in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, to give your fingerprints and photo and hand over your documents. TLScontact does not operate the UK service in the UAE. GOV.UK says you usually get a decision within 3 weeks of applying, proving your identity and providing your documents, and that is a target, not a promise. Visa Doctor is not the embassy, UKVI or VFS, but we prepare your documents and book your appointment.
The UK has two offices in the UAE, and both are listed on GOV.UK. If you searched for the “British embassy Dubai” or the “British consulate Dubai”, this is the one to know about.
GOV.UK states that public access to embassies, high commissions and consulates is by appointment only. Both offices exist to help British nationals and to build UK and UAE relations. They are not where UK visa applicants go.
GOV.UK is direct about this on both embassy pages: the British Embassy does not provide visas and cannot advise on UK visas. Questions about the application process or your visa status go to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), not to the Dubai or Abu Dhabi offices. So you cannot walk in with a visit visa application, drop off your passport, or ask for an appointment at the embassy gate.
The embassies do help British nationals with lost passports, emergency travel documents and notarial services. If that is what you need, use the contact forms on the British Embassy Dubai page or the British Embassy Abu Dhabi page.
For a UK visa from Dubai, you apply online, pay the fee and book an appointment at a visa application centre as part of that online application. GOV.UK’s find a visa application centre page sends UAE applicants to the VFS Global UAE page for the UK, so VFS is the operator to trust, not TLScontact.
VFS Global announced that its UK visa application centre in Dubai moved on 24 March 2025 to Wafi Mall, Phase 5, First Floor, in Umm Hurair 2. Be aware that the GOV.UK listing for the Dubai centre still shows an older Phase 2 address at Wafi Mall, so check your appointment confirmation and the VFS Global UAE UK page before you travel.
GOV.UK lists the Abu Dhabi centre at Level B2 (Lower Ground), The Mall, World Trade Centre, Khalifa Bin Zayed The 1st Street (Airport Road), Abu Dhabi. You choose your centre when you apply, and availability differs between the two, so check both calendars when you want an earlier slot. Opening hours change, so we leave them to the VFS page.
Every person needs their own application, fee and appointment, including children.
GOV.UK lists what you must provide in the online form and at the centre. You need a passport valid for the whole of your stay, the dates you plan to travel, where you will stay, how much you think the trip will cost, your home address and how long you have lived there, and how much you earn if you have an income. Depending on your case, you may also need your travel history for the last 10 years, your employer’s details, who is paying for the trip, and a tuberculosis test certificate if you are visiting for more than 6 months. Documents not in English or Welsh need certified translations.
Money is where UAE residents most often run into trouble. Our guides explain what a caseworker looks for in UK visa documents and financial requirements from Dubai and in UK visa bank statement requirements for Dubai residents.
The standard timeline on GOV.UK is a decision within 3 weeks, counted from the point you have applied, proved your identity and provided your documents. The Home Office says it can take longer, for example when it needs more information, and it does not reimburse travel costs if a decision takes longer than expected.
GOV.UK also says you may be able to pay for a faster decision. The priority service costs £500 on top of the visa fee and usually gives a decision within 5 working days. The super priority service costs £1,000 on top and usually gives a decision by the end of the next working day after your appointment. Availability depends on the application type and location, so check the option when you apply. Paying for speed does not make an approval more likely. For what is realistic, read our guides to the UK priority visa from Dubai and the urgent UK visa from Dubai.
UKVI emails you when a decision has been made. The visa application centre only takes your biometrics and documents, and it does not make the decision. Our guide to tracking a UK visa application in the UAE explains what each status means, and when to contact UKVI.
An electronic travel authorisation (ETA) is not a visa, and it depends on the nationality on your passport. GOV.UK’s ETA list includes nationals of the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, who can apply for an ETA to visit for up to 6 months. Living in the UAE does not change this. If you are a UAE resident with a passport that is not on the list, you will need a visit visa instead, and a Schengen visa or a UAE residence permit does not let you travel to the UK without one. The ETA costs £20 on GOV.UK at the time of checking, and the fee has changed recently, as we explain in our UK ETA fee increase guide. Use only the official GOV.UK service, because other sites charge more.
We are not the British Embassy, UKVI or VFS Global, and we do not decide any application. We prepare the file: we check your documents against the GOV.UK requirements, help you complete the online application, draft a clear cover letter, and book your appointment at the VFS centre that suits you. We never promise an approval, because UKVI decides every case. See our UK visa from Dubai page for the full service.
