Do not want to wait a year for your USA slot? Get it in 7 working days.

The official calendar shows about 11.5 months for a US visa interview in Dubai. We take that wait down to about 7 working days: we watch every appointment release, book the earliest confirmed date we can reach, and prepare your DS-160 and supporting file so the slot is not wasted.

  • Your appointment timeframe is agreed with you in writing
  • If we do not secure it in that time, we refund our service fee
  • We never promise the visa decision, which belongs to the consular officer

Yes, in most cases you need US permission even if you are only changing planes in the United States. A traveller connecting through a US airport needs a transit (C-1) visa, a valid B1/B2 visitor visa, or, for citizens of the 42 Visa Waiver Program countries, an approved ESTA. Only citizens of Canada and Bermuda are exempt, and in 2026 nationals of the 19 countries under full suspension in Presidential Proclamation 10998 generally cannot be issued a transit visa at all.

Why a connection counts as entering the US

The State Department describes transit (C) visas as nonimmigrant visas “for persons traveling in immediate and continuous transit through the United States enroute to another country, with few exceptions”. US airports do not have an international airside transit zone of the kind found in Dubai or Doha, so a connection in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles on the way to Mexico, Canada, Central America or the Caribbean means passing through US immigration. Airlines check travel documents for the whole journey at check-in in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, so a missing US document usually shows up before you fly.

Flights from Abu Dhabi add one more step. Abu Dhabi is a US Customs and Border Protection preclearance location, so passengers on US-bound flights from Zayed International Airport clear US inspection before departure. CBP says precleared travellers “bypass CBP and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) inspections upon U.S. arrival and proceed directly to their connecting flight or destination”. Preclearance moves the inspection earlier; it does not remove the need for a visa or ESTA.

If you are a Visa Waiver national who has been in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen or North Korea on or after 1 March 2011, or in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021, ESTA is normally not available and you need a visa for the connection as well. Our guide to ESTA or B1/B2 for UAE residents explains how to choose, and our nationality guide lists the Proclamation 10998 countries.

C-1 transit visa or B1/B2: which to choose

A C-1 visa only covers immediate and continuous onward travel. You cannot leave the airport to go sightseeing, stay with family or attend a meeting on it. A B1/B2 visitor visa covers tourism and business and can also be used for a connection, which is why many UAE residents who expect to fly through the US more than once choose the B1/B2 instead.

The validity figures come from the State Department’s reciprocity schedule for each country, checked on 24 September 2026. The officer can issue less than the maximum.

Step by step: applying for a C-1 transit visa

  1. Confirm you need it. Check ESTA eligibility, any valid B visa you hold, and the Proclamation 10998 list.
  2. Choose where to interview. The State Department asks applicants to book in their country of residence or nationality.
  3. Complete the DS-160 and upload a photo that meets the State Department’s requirements.
  4. Pay the $185 fee and book through the official appointment system for that country.
  5. Prepare documents: passport, DS-160 confirmation, full itinerary showing the US connection and onward flight, and entry permission for your final destination.
  6. Attend the interview and wait for the passport to be returned before buying non-refundable tickets.

Documents for a transit application

  • Passport valid for at least six months beyond your time in the US.
  • DS-160 confirmation page, with a photo uploaded while completing the form.
  • Application fee receipt.
  • Your full itinerary showing the US connection and the onward flight.
  • A visa, residence permit or other entry permission for your final destination, if that country requires one.
  • Your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, which show where you live and why you will return.

Common mistakes and refusal reasons

  • Assuming airside transit exists. It does not at US airports, so booking a US connection without a US document leads to denied boarding in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
  • Using ESTA after travel to a listed country. Travel to Iran, Iraq and other listed countries since 2011 removes ESTA eligibility, even on a Visa Waiver passport.
  • No permission for the final destination. A C-1 officer will want to see that you can enter the country you are travelling to.
  • Refusal under 214(b). The State Department’s visa denials page says this applies when the applicant has not shown they qualify for the category. For a C-1, that often means the trip does not look like genuine onward travel.

Timing from the UAE, and alternative routes

There is no separate fast lane for transit applicants; they join the same nonimmigrant queue as visitors. Appointments are available at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the US Consulate General in Dubai, and UAE residents can book there. See our guide to expedited US appointments.

For many travellers the practical answer is to route through a hub that does not require a US document, such as a Gulf, European or Canadian connection. Check that hub’s own rules first: the UK and several Schengen countries require airport transit visas for some nationalities. The GOV.UK transit tool covers UK connections.

How Visa Doctor helps

We check whether your route needs a US document at all, and whether ESTA, a B1/B2 or a C-1 is the right fit. We prepare ESTA applications and B1/B2 files. We do not prepare C-1 transit or crew applications, and we will tell you so at the start rather than take a case we do not handle. We cannot create appointments or shorten official queues, and the consular officer decides every visa. Airline crew should see our cabin crew visa guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for a layover in the USA if I never leave the airport?

Yes, unless you are a citizen of Canada or Bermuda or a Visa Waiver national with ESTA. The US treats a connection as entering the country, so you need a C visa, a B visa or ESTA.

Do Indian citizens need a transit visa for the USA?

Yes. India is not in the Visa Waiver Program, so an Indian citizen connecting in the US needs a C-1 transit visa or a valid B1/B2. See our guide for Indian citizens applying from Dubai.

Can I use my B1/B2 visa for transit?

The State Department says that if you already have a valid visitor (B) visa, you may be able to use it to transit the United States.

Does ESTA cover a connecting flight?

Yes. The State Department says transiting the US is generally permitted for Visa Waiver travellers with ESTA, as long as they have not lost eligibility through travel or dual nationality.

Does the 2026 travel ban affect transit visas?

For nationals of the 19 countries under full suspension in Proclamation 10998, yes: nonimmigrant visas, including transit visas, are suspended unless an exception applies. For partial suspension countries, B1/B2 is suspended but C-1 is not listed.

Does preclearance in Abu Dhabi replace the visa?

No. Preclearance means US border inspection happens in Abu Dhabi before you board. You still need a valid visa or ESTA to pass it.
