Cabin crew do not have a visa problem. They have a passport problem. The application itself is the same one everybody else fills in, but almost every visa process in the UAE assumes you can live without your passport for two to four weeks, and you cannot. Your passport is your licence to work.
This guide is written specifically for Emirates and Etihad cabin crew based in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It covers the three routes crew actually ask about, Schengen, the UK and the United States, and it is organised around the only question that matters to someone holding a roster: how long will my passport be out of my hands, and can I avoid that entirely?
The short answer, which surprises most crew: for the UK you now keep your passport the same day, and for Schengen there are exactly two countries that publish a crew specific rule. They are probably not the ones you have been told about.
Visa Doctor is offering 10% off our service for Emirates and Etihad cabin crew across Schengen, UK and US applications. Mention that you are crew when you contact us and show your airline staff ID. There is no code and no form to fill in.
This changed recently and it changed in your favour. The UK stopped issuing visa vignettes, the sticker placed in your passport, to successful new applicants on 1 July 2026. Visitor visa applicants now receive an eVisa, a digital record linked to your passport, instead.
The practical consequence for crew is the part worth reading twice. On the UK Standard Visitor route, the published position is that you get your passport or travel document back on the same day as your appointment. There is no separate paid service to buy for this and no crew scheme to apply for. It is simply how the route now works.
A few things to keep straight:
Be aware of one trap. The UK Immigration ID Check app, which lets some applicants verify identity by phone and never hand over a passport, is not open to this route. Eligibility runs off the document you hold, essentially biometric EU, EEA and Swiss passports or an expired BRP. If an agency tells you the app means you will never visit a centre, they have not checked.
A standard Schengen application in the UAE means surrendering your passport at the appointment, and it stays with the mission until a decision is made. The passport is held from submission, not from the decision, at every mission we checked. That is the default. Here are the exceptions.
Germany publishes the clearest crew provision of any Schengen mission operating in the UAE. Its requirements state that the original passport must be submitted on the day of the appointment, then add this:
Cabin crew and pilots will be allowed to withdraw their passports from the respective application centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi within 1 to 3 working days after their application is submitted at the Consulate.
There is a dedicated consulate form headed Cabin Crew and Pilots that forms part of the application. You withdraw the passport, fly, and bring it back so the visa can be placed inside. The published resubmission window appears as 10 to 12 calendar days in one place and 15 days in another, so work to the shorter figure and tell the counter staff at submission if your roster will not allow it.
The Netherlands names crew as an outright exception. Its published UAE requirements say you are asked to submit your passport during the appointment so the application can be processed, and then state that you do not have to submit it if you are airline flight crew or cabin crew. That wording is repeated across every visa category it publishes for the UAE.
The trade off is time. The Dutch government quotes a processing time of 25 calendar days, longer than the 15 calendar days the Visa Code sets as standard.
Denmark is the country crew are most often told to apply to, and the advice is wrong. Denmark publishes a temporary withdrawal facility, but frames it around emergency travel rather than employment, and there is no cabin crew, aircrew or pilot category anywhere in its UAE material. A roster is not automatically an emergency. Denmark also states that you will not be notified when a decision is ready.
Every other Schengen country we checked, including Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, Finland, Portugal, Hungary, Iceland and Luxembourg, publishes no passport retention route and no crew route from the UAE. Where crew categories do exist elsewhere, as with Greece and Finland, they cover vessel crew and seafarers, not aircrew.
If your trip is Schengen wide, this matters less than you think: you must apply to your main destination or the country where you will spend the most nights. Choosing Germany for the crew rule when your holiday is entirely in Italy is a refusal waiting to happen. We have written more on the Schengen side of this in our guide to Schengen visas for cabin crew in Dubai.
The US is the hardest of the three and the numbers are blunt. As of 17 September 2026 the published next available B1/B2 interview appointment was roughly 12.5 months in Abu Dhabi and 11.5 months in Dubai. US nonimmigrant visa services in the UAE are running in a limited way at present.
Appointments are not released continuously. Both missions release nonimmigrant interview appointments every Friday morning between 7:30 and 11:30, excluding US and UAE holidays, and occasionally release additional appointments outside that schedule. If you already hold an appointment you can log in at any time to look for an earlier one, which is the mechanism most applicants never use.
The single most common mistake we see from crew: your C-1/D crew visa does not cover personal travel. A C-1/D covers you working aboard an aircraft. If your purpose in the United States is to visit friends or to sightsee, you need a B1/B2 visitor visa, applied for separately in your own name. The crew visa category also moves far faster than the visitor category, and that speed does not transfer. Passengers who are only changing planes in the US have separate rules, covered in our US transit visa guide.
If you are renewing, note that the interview waiver rules tightened on 1 October 2025. The old 48 month rule has gone. A renewal now generally needs a previous full validity B1/B2 that expired within the last 12 months, you to have been 18 or over when it was issued, no previous refusal, and the application to be made in your country of nationality or residence. That last point catches many crew, who are frequently third country nationals living in the UAE.
For the US specifically, including current package options, see FastUSTravel, the USA service of Visa Doctor.
We work out which country your trip actually qualifies for, prepare and check the file, book the appointment around what your roster allows, and make sure crew provisions are applied properly at submission rather than discovered afterwards. For the US we work the Friday release window rather than waiting in the published queue.
What no agency can do is guarantee a decision. Whether a visa is granted, how long it is valid and how many entries it carries sit entirely with the consulate or the Home Office. If anyone promises you an approval, they are selling something they do not control.
For the UK, the Standard Visitor route returns your passport the same day as your appointment and issues a digital eVisa. For Schengen, Germany allows crew to withdraw the passport within 1 to 3 working days of submitting, and the Netherlands names crew as not having to submit it at all.
No. Denmark publishes a temporary withdrawal facility framed around emergency travel. There is no crew category in its published UAE material.
Yes. A C-1/D covers you working aboard an aircraft. Personal travel to the United States requires a B1/B2 visitor visa applied for separately.
Contact us, say you are Emirates or Etihad cabin crew, and show your airline staff ID. That is all that is needed.
The published decision time for a Standard Visitor application is 3 weeks from your biometrics appointment. Your passport comes back the same day as the appointment, so the wait does not ground you.
We book around your roster wherever availability allows, and for the US we monitor the Friday release window for exactly this reason. What we will not do is promise a specific date before we can see the slots, because appointment availability is not ours to control.
