Quick answer: Yes. Filipino passport holders need a UK Standard Visitor Visa — the Philippines is not on the UK’s visa-exempt list, so the ETA does not apply. If you are a Filipino resident of the UAE, you apply here in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah with your Emirates ID and residence visa, and you do not need to return to the Philippines to do it.

The Filipino community is one of the largest in the UAE, and UK trips — often to visit relatives working in Britain — are common. Here is exactly how a Filipino national living in the Emirates applies for a UK visit visa in 2026, and how to avoid the pitfalls that lead to refusals.

Filipino nationals need a Standard Visitor Visa

For tourism, family visits or business, you apply for the UK Standard Visitor Visa, which permits stays of up to six months. Long-term visitor visas (2, 5 or 10 years) are available for frequent travellers, with each stay still limited to six months. The cheap Electronic Travel Authorisation is not an option for Filipino passport holders.

Applying from the UAE

You complete the application online, pay the fee, and attend a biometrics appointment at a VFS Global centre in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah. Your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID establish that you are lawfully based here, which is why you can apply from the Emirates rather than Manila. Make sure your residence visa still has meaningful validity when you apply — a visa expiring within a couple of months weakens your case.

Documents to prepare

  • Philippine passport (and older passports showing travel history).
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID.
  • Bank statements for the last 3–6 months, stamped, showing steady salary credits.
  • Employment certificate stating your position, salary and approved leave dates.
  • Tenancy contract or accommodation proof in the UAE.
  • Flight and hotel reservations plus an itinerary.
  • If visiting relatives in the UK: an invitation letter, plus the host’s UK status (BRP, settled status or passport) and address proof.

Build the exact list with our checklist generator, estimate the cost with the cost calculator, and prepare a cover letter and invitation letter.

Visiting family in the UK: the sponsorship question

Many Filipino applicants are visiting a sibling, cousin or spouse working in the UK, and that relative offers to cover the costs. This is entirely allowed — but it must be declared and documented. Include the host’s invitation letter, their immigration status, and their bank statements or payslips showing they can genuinely support you. Trying to disguise sponsorship by presenting borrowed funds as your own is the fastest route to a refusal and a credibility finding that follows you into future applications.

The domestic-worker and household-staff situation

If you work in the UAE as a domestic worker, nanny or driver and your employer is taking you to the UK, you may not need a Standard Visitor Visa but rather the appropriate domestic worker route — the requirements and evidence are different, including proof of the existing employment relationship. Do not simply apply as a tourist. Speak to our agents so the correct category is used from the start.

Showing you will return

The caseworker’s core question is whether you are a genuine visitor. Your strongest evidence as a UAE resident is a stable job with approved leave, ongoing salary, a tenancy, and family ties in the UAE or the Philippines. Present these clearly and consistently. Gauge your case with the approval-chance estimator; if you have had a refusal, use the refusal decoder before you reapply.

Frequently asked questions

Can Filipino citizens use the UK ETA?

No. The ETA is for visa-exempt nationalities only. Filipino passport holders need a full Standard Visitor Visa.

Can I apply for a UK visa in Dubai with a Philippine passport?

Yes. As a UAE resident you apply online and give biometrics at VFS in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah using your Emirates ID and residence visa. There is no need to travel to Manila.

My sister in the UK will pay for my trip. Is that allowed?

Yes, as long as it is declared. Include her invitation letter, proof of her UK immigration status, and her financial documents showing she can support your visit.

Do I need to show my own bank balance if I am sponsored?

You should still show your own finances and employment. Sponsorship supplements your case; it does not replace the need to demonstrate your own circumstances and ties.

Visa rules change frequently. This guide is general information; always confirm current requirements on the official UK government website, or contact our agents for advice on your case. Visa Doctor is a private service provider and does not issue visas.
