Two questions decide whether a second passport is worth pursuing for a UAE resident: what the UAE thinks, and what your home country thinks. People usually ask only the first. The second is where expensive mistakes happen, because some countries cancel citizenship or ignore a foreign passport when you acquire another nationality. This article explains both sides in plain language. It is general guidance, so confirm your own position with your embassy or a lawyer.
In July 2025 the head of Dubai’s immigration department (GDRFA) said that residents who acquire a new citizenship keep their UAE residence as long as their legal status is maintained, as reported by Gulf News. In practice, keep your residence visa valid, enter and leave the UAE on the passport your residence is linked to, and avoid using a different passport for UAE entry unless your sponsor and the immigration authority have been informed. Rules on the passport recorded in your visa can matter, so update your records when your documents change.
This advice is for expatriate residents. The UAE does not generally recognise dual nationality for its own citizens, so it is a different question for Emiratis.
A second passport can create problems at home even if the country that issues it is happy. Your home country may require you to give up your original citizenship, may refuse to recognise your new one, or may require you to report it. The consequences can include losing the right to vote or own certain property, losing consular support, or in some cases losing citizenship itself.
India does not allow dual citizenship. An Indian citizen who voluntarily acquires another nationality ceases to be an Indian citizen under Indian law, and is expected to surrender the Indian passport. People in this position often use an Overseas Citizen of India card, which gives long term access to India but is not citizenship. Anyone from India should speak to the Indian mission before investing in any second nationality.
Pakistan allows dual nationality only with a specific list of countries that it has agreements with. Media reports in April 2025 said the countries commonly discussed for investment programmes were not on that list. Confirm with the Pakistani authorities which countries are recognised at the time you apply.
Russia allows dual citizenship in principle but requires citizens to notify the authorities within 60 days of acquiring another nationality, and failure to do so can lead to penalties. Some second passport programmes also restrict applicants from Russia, so check programme rules before you start. At least one Caribbean programme lists Russia among excluded nationalities.
Rules vary widely. Some Arab countries allow dual citizenship freely, some allow it with approval, and some do not recognise a foreign nationality for their own citizens. Iranian, Syrian and some other applicants also face eligibility restrictions in certain programmes. The safe approach is to ask your embassy in writing and keep the reply.
A second passport does not on its own change where you are tax resident, and living in the UAE does not remove your tax duties to a country that taxes by citizenship, such as the United States. Argentina has said that investment citizenship does not by itself create tax residence, but you should still get advice before you spend time there.

Holding another nationality is generally not a problem for UAE residence, but you must keep your legal status valid. Your home country is where the rules can be strict.
A Dubai immigration official said in July 2025 that residence is unaffected if legal status is maintained. Keep your documents up to date and use the passport your visa is linked to.
There is no single public rule we can quote. Keep your residence records consistent and ask the immigration authority if your passport details change.
Not without giving up Indian citizenship. India does not allow dual citizenship. An OCI card is an alternative for long term links with India.
Only with countries on Pakistan’s dual nationality list. Check the current list before applying anywhere.
Russia allows dual citizenship but requires notification within 60 days. Some programmes restrict Russian applicants.
Often yes. Some countries require notification and some cancel citizenship. Ask your embassy in writing.
Not by itself. Tax depends on where you live and on each country’s rules, so get advice.
Yes. A passport is citizenship. Residence is permission to live in a country and can be lost more easily.
