Quick answer: South Africa has an Embassy in Abu Dhabi and a Consulate-General in Bur Dubai, but visa applications from the UAE go through the VFS Global visa application centre at WAFI Mall, Umm Hurair 2, not the diplomatic offices. The consulate’s own site says all visa applications must be submitted through VFS, apart from diplomatic passport holders. You must hold a valid UAE residence visa, apply no earlier than one month before travel for a short visit, and submit in person unless you are under 18 or over 65. South Africa has also launched an online ETA, but only for a short list of countries so far. Visa Doctor helps you prepare the documents and book the VFS step, but we are not the embassy, VFS or the Department of Home Affairs and cannot promise a visa.
People often search for the “South African embassy in Dubai”. The embassy is in Abu Dhabi, and Dubai has a Consulate-General. For a visitor visa, neither is where you submit your application.
The consulate’s page on the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) site says it is in Bur Dubai, on Khalid bin Al Waleed Street in the Sharaf Building, 3rd Floor, opposite the BurJuman Centre and next to the South African Airways building. Its telephone number is +971 4 397 5222. The page lists public consular hours of 08:30 to 12:30, Sunday to Thursday, and says commissioner of oath services are by appointment. That page does not look fully up to date, so check the current hours and arrangements by phone before you go. The consulate deals with consular and civic matters such as passports and commissioner of oath services, which is a different job from visitor visas.
The South African government’s contact directory lists the embassy at Villa No 1-151, corner of Jabal Al Marfa and Al Niwayi Streets, Al Mushrif, Abu Dhabi (PO Box 29446), telephone +971 2 417 6400, email abudhabi.dha@dirco.gov.za.
The Dubai consulate’s visa page says: all applications for visas to South Africa must be submitted through VFS offices at WAFI Mall, and that long term applications previously handled by the consulate moved to VFS from 1 November 2020. It says only applications for holders of diplomatic passports are submitted at the consulate, and that no telephonic visa enquiries are attended to. The VFS page for South Africa in the UAE adds that medical and corporate visas must be applied for at the Consulate-General in Dubai.
The VFS centre is at WAFI Mall, Umm Hurair 2, Dubai, and the helpline listed on the consulate’s page is +971 4 205 5719. VFS publishes its own business hours and booking details on its UAE page, so confirm them there. Passport collection and submission windows have differed between sources over the years, which is another reason to read the current page.
The VFS page states that applicants must reside in the UAE or hold valid UAE residency. For short term visas (up to 90 days) the application may only be submitted one month before travel. Long term applications can be submitted from three months before. The page lists visitor streams such as tourism, family visits and short business visits, and long stay categories such as work, study and retirement visas. Our guide to the South Africa visa from Dubai covers the visitor visa for UAE residents.
South Africa launched an Electronic Travel Authorisation at eta.dha.gov.za in 2026, with an official launch reported on 12 August 2026. News reports at the time said it was available for travellers from China, India, Indonesia and Mexico, with more countries to be added gradually, and that approved ETAs are stored on a phone. We could not find the UAE or UAE residents named in those reports. Until the Department of Home Affairs says otherwise on its own site, UAE residents who need a visa should expect to use VFS.
VFS Global’s tourist visa checklist for the UAE is the most useful single source. At the time we checked, it listed:
For children under 18, the checklist asks for the unabridged birth certificate, and parental consent affidavits when travelling alone or with one parent. Bring originals and copies, and check the current checklist for the exact balance and validity figures, because they are updated. Applicants submit in person, except children under 18 and applicants over 65, according to the checklist.
Visa Doctor is a licensed Dubai visa documentation and appointment agency (licence 4417571.01). We are not the South African Embassy, the Consulate-General, VFS Global or the Department of Home Affairs, and we cannot issue a visa. We help you confirm whether you need a visa, build a complete file that matches the VFS checklist (employer letter, insurance, bank statements, itinerary, minors’ papers), and help with the submission steps so your visit to VFS is not wasted. See visa document preparation in Dubai, visa appointment booking and our visa services.
