A Japan visa from Dubai takes a minimum of 8 to 10 working days from the day you submit at the VFS Global Japan Visa Application Centre, and a Japan visa from Abu Dhabi takes 8 working days, according to VFS Global’s official Japan pages for the UAE. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays announced by the Embassy of Japan are not counted. Either office can take 3 to 4 weeks if documents are incomplete or the case needs more checks, and you can apply no earlier than 90 days before you enter Japan.

This guide sets out the official processing time by visa type, where to submit, how collection works now, and when to apply. Last checked 25 September 2026 against VFS Global Japan UAE and the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai.

Japan visa processing time by visa type

The figures below are the processing times VFS Global publishes for each Japan visa category on its UAE pages. They run from the date of submission at the visa centre and count working days only.

Visa typeDubai (Consulate-General)Abu Dhabi (Embassy)Collection
Tourism eVISA, single entryMinimum 8 to 10 working days8 working dayseVISA issued electronically; passport back by courier
Tourism visa, multiple entryMinimum 8 to 10 working days8 working daysCourier only
Visiting relatives or acquaintancesMinimum 8 to 10 working days8 working daysCourier only
Business affairsMinimum 8 to 10 working days8 working daysCourier only
Long stay (work, study) with a Certificate of EligibilityMinimum 8 to 10 working days8 working daysCourier only

For every category, VFS adds that processing “may be extended up to 3 weeks to 4 weeks” when documents are not submitted as required or for other justified reasons. UAE nationals do not need a visa for stays of 90 days or less, according to the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai.

The Japan eVISA is issued and recorded electronically. VFS says it is valid for three months after issuance, for one entry, and you show the visa issuance notice on your phone or tablet at check-in. You still book an appointment and submit your application at the visa centre.

Dubai or Abu Dhabi: where you submit

Where you apply depends on your residence, not your preference:

  • Dubai and the northern emirates: apply at the VFS Global Japan Visa Application Centre in Dubai, which handles applications for the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai. The Consulate lists the centre at WAFI Mall, First Floor, Phase 5, Umm Hurair 2.
  • Abu Dhabi, including Al Ain: apply at the Abu Dhabi visa centre for the Embassy of Japan. VFS says Abu Dhabi residents whose residence visa is from another emirate must show proof of living in Abu Dhabi, such as three months of bank or card statements, a tenancy contract and a TAQA bill.

Since 1 August 2024 the Consulate-General in Dubai no longer accepts ordinary visa applications directly; they go through VFS Global. If you need to move a VFS Japan appointment, VFS allows one reschedule up to 2 days before the appointment, subject to availability.

When a Japan visa takes longer

The official pages name two causes of delay: documents that are not submitted as required, and “other factors or justified reasons”. In practice that means:

  • A missing or inconsistent document, such as an itinerary that does not match your bookings, or a guarantee letter that is incomplete.
  • Weekends and holidays. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays announced by the Embassy of Japan are not counted as working days. VFS also closes its UAE centres on some public holidays; for example, all VFS centres in the UAE closed on Friday 28 August 2026.

Our guide to what UAE residents get wrong with Japan and China visas covers the document mistakes we see most often.

How early to apply

You cannot apply more than 90 days before your entry into Japan. Within that window, count backwards from your flight: allow the published 8 to 10 working days, add weekends and holidays, then add time for courier return of your passport. If your trip falls soon after a public holiday, plan with the 3 to 4 week scenario in mind. Do not buy non-refundable tickets before the visa is issued; a flight and hotel reservation for visa purposes is the usual way to show an itinerary.

For fees, see our note on the Japan visa fee changes for UAE applicants. On 25 September 2026 VFS listed AED 365 for a Japan eVISA for most nationalities and AED 20 for Indian nationals, plus a VFS service fee of AED 110 including VAT.

Tracking and passport collection

  • Tracking: VFS emails you when the decision has been returned to the visa centre. You can also track online with the reference number on your VFS receipt and your last name.
  • Collection: VFS Global announced that from 25 March 2026 passport collection is available by courier only, and in-person collection is suspended until further notice.
  • Enquiries: the Consulate asks applicants to contact VFS Global for visa questions, and says enquiries about eVISA status are not accepted.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Japan visa take from Dubai?

VFS Global’s Japan page for Dubai says processing takes a minimum of 8 to 10 working days from the date you submit, not counting Saturdays, Sundays and holidays announced by the Embassy of Japan in the UAE. It can be extended to 3 to 4 weeks if documents are not as required or for other reasons.

How long does a Japan visa take in Abu Dhabi?

VFS Global’s Japan page for Abu Dhabi says 8 working days from the date of submission, again excluding Saturdays, Sundays and Japanese Embassy holidays, with a possible extension to 3 to 4 weeks.

Do weekends count in the Japan visa processing time?

No. Both VFS pages count working days and exclude Saturdays, Sundays and holidays announced by the Embassy of Japan in the UAE.

How early can I apply for a Japan visa from the UAE?

VFS Global says you can apply only up to 90 days before your entry into Japan, and applications made earlier than that are not accepted. Within that window, applying early leaves room for the longer 3 to 4 week scenario.

How do I get my passport back after a Japan visa application?

VFS Global announced that from 25 March 2026 passport collection is by courier only, and in-person collection is suspended until further notice. You receive an email when the decision has been returned to the visa centre.

Can I track my Japan visa application in the UAE?

Yes. VFS Global offers online tracking using the reference number on the receipt issued at the visa centre together with your last name, and it emails you when the decision is back at the centre.
