If you are travelling over UAE National Day or the school winter break in 2026, the visa is the part to sort out first. For Europe, lodge your Schengen application by early November. For the UK, apply by mid November.
This guide sets out the 2026 dates, the latest sensible application date for each destination, and what to do if you are already late.
| Date | What happens | Why it matters for your visa |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 December | UAE National Day public holiday | Visa centres and many consulates in the UAE close, so those days are lost for appointments and passport collection |
| Monday 14 December to Sunday 3 January | School winter break (classes resume 4 January) | The busiest family travel window of the year, and appointment demand peaks in October and November |
| Thursday 24 and Friday 25 December | Christmas | European consulates observe their own holidays, which shortens processing time just when demand is highest |
| Friday 1 January 2027 | New Year’s Day, UAE public holiday | Creates a three-day weekend, and another short closure for consulates |
Islamic holidays follow the moon, but National Day and New Year are fixed dates set out on the UAE Government portal. School dates follow the Ministry of Education calendar that Dubai private schools now align with. Always check your own school’s calendar too.
| Destination | Earliest you can apply | Aim to apply by | Absolute cut-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schengen, leaving 1 December (National Day) | Already open | 25 October 2026 | 16 November 2026 |
| Schengen, leaving 12 to 14 December (winter break) | Already open | 8 November 2026 | 27 November 2026 |
| Schengen, leaving 28 December (New Year) | Already open | 20 November 2026 | 13 December 2026, though consulate holidays make this unrealistic |
| UK, leaving 1 December | Already open | 3 November 2026 | No formal cut-off; decisions usually take 3 weeks |
| UK, leaving 12 to 14 December | Already open | 15 November 2026 | No formal cut-off; decisions usually take 3 weeks |
| USA | Already open | Book as early as you can; the official wait is long, our service targets about 7 working days | Not applicable |
The “aim to apply by” column is our planning advice, not an official deadline. It leaves room for finding an appointment, for the standard decision period, and for the holiday closures above.
The European Commission’s rule is simple. You can lodge a Schengen application no earlier than six months before your trip and at least 15 days before it. Consulates usually decide within 15 days, and that can stretch to 45 days when they need more information or more documents.
For December, the window is already open, so there is no advantage in waiting. The pressure point is the appointment, not the rule. Demand from UAE residents for December travel builds from October, and consulates close for both UAE and European holidays in December. If your preferred country shows no dates, read our guide to what to do when no Schengen appointments are available, and remember that you must apply to the country of your main destination, not the one with the shortest queue. Our guide to booking ahead explains the timing in more detail.

GOV.UK states that the earliest you can apply for a Standard Visitor visa is three months before you travel, and that you will usually get a decision within three weeks. For a trip starting in mid December, the window opened in mid September. You get your passport back on the same day as your visa centre appointment, which helps if you also need a Schengen application in the same month.
Some passport holders, including GCC nationals, travel on an electronic travel authorisation instead of a visa. Check which applies to you in our guide to which nationalities need a UK visa, and for the main application read our UK visa page.
B1/B2 appointments are available at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the US Consulate General in Dubai, and UAE residents can book there. The State Department table showed about 11.5 months for Dubai and 12.5 months for Abu Dhabi on 17 September 2026. Visa Doctorโs appointment service targets about 7 working days, timeframe agreed in writing, and we refund our service fee if the appointment is not secured. We never promise the visa decision. The interview waiver (dropbox) is not available to most applicants at present, so most applicants need an interview.
For a December trip, that leaves three realistic routes:
Our explainer on whether you can apply for a US visa from the UAE tracks the current status in detail.
We prepare your file, check it against the consulate’s current list, and book the earliest suitable appointment we can find. We cannot create appointments that do not exist, and the decision on your visa belongs to the consulate. If anyone promises you a guaranteed December slot or a guaranteed approval, treat that as a warning sign.
Aim to lodge your application by late October 2026 for a departure on 1 or 2 December. The official cut-off is 15 days before travel, but appointment demand and holiday closures make leaving it that late risky.
Not in late September or October. The six-month window is open. The practical deadline is the appointment: if you can lodge by around 8 November for a mid December departure, you leave room for the standard 15-day decision period and for Christmas closures.
Up to three months before you travel. For a trip starting mid December, you can apply now. Decisions usually take about three weeks, so apply by mid November at the latest.
Yes, B1/B2 appointments are available at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the US Consulate General in Dubai, and UAE residents can book there. The official wait is long (about 11.5 months in Dubai and 12.5 months in Abu Dhabi on 17 September 2026), so December travel is realistic if you already hold a valid US visa, qualify for ESTA, or secure an earlier appointment through our service, which targets about 7 working days.
UAE National Day on 2 and 3 December is an official public holiday, and visa centres and consulates in the UAE generally close for it. Check your centre’s own notice, and do not plan an appointment or a passport collection on those days.
Book refundable or changeable flights and hotels only. Consulates want to see a plan, not a non-refundable ticket, and holiday fares are expensive to lose.
