Do not want to wait a year for your USA slot? Get it in 7 working days.

The official calendar shows about 11.5 months for a US visa interview in Dubai. We take that wait down to about 7 working days: we watch every appointment release, book the earliest confirmed date we can reach, and prepare your DS-160 and supporting file so the slot is not wasted.

  • Your appointment timeframe is agreed with you in writing
  • If we do not secure it in that time, we refund our service fee
  • We never promise the visa decision, which belongs to the consular officer

US visitor and student visas from Dubai and Abu Dhabi: B1, B2, F1 and F2.

The US Department of State publishes the next available B1/B2 interview at about 11.5 months in Dubai and 12.5 months in Abu Dhabi (updated 17 September 2026). B1/B2 and student visa appointments are available in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. You can also apply in your home country. New interview appointments are released on Friday mornings between 7:30 and 11:30, and occasionally outside that window. We watch those releases, book the earliest confirmed date we can reach, and we prepare the DS-160 and the supporting file so the slot is not wasted. We also handle ESTA travel authorisation, which is not a visa. We do not handle work, immigrant or transit categories. If we do not secure your appointment in the time we agree in writing, we refund our service fee. The visa decision belongs to the consular officer.

Quick answer: Section 214(b) is the legal reason most US visitor visa applications are refused. It means the consular officer was not convinced you have strong enough ties to the UAE or your home country to guarantee you will return after your trip, not that you did something wrong. There is no formal appeal, but you can reapply at any time with stronger evidence of ties and purpose.

If your US visitor visa interview at the consulate in Dubai or Abu Dhabi ended with a refusal slip citing Section 214(b), you are in good company. It is by far the most common reason US visitor visa applications are turned down worldwide, and it catches out well qualified, financially stable applicants regularly, not just weak applications. Understanding what it actually means, and what it does not mean, is the first step to putting together a stronger reapplication.

What Section 214(b) actually means

Under US immigration law, every applicant for a B1/B2 visitor visa is presumed by default to intend to immigrate permanently to the United States. The burden is on you, the applicant, to overcome that presumption by convincing the consular officer, in a short interview, that you have strong enough ties abroad, meaning reasons to return home, that you will leave the US at the end of an approved stay. If the officer is not convinced within the interview, the application is refused under Section 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This is a judgement call made in a few minutes, based on your answers, your documents and your overall profile, so two similar applicants can get different outcomes.

214(b) versus 221g: what is the difference

Refusal typeWhat it means
Section 214(b)The officer was not convinced of your ties or intent to return. This is a final decision on that application.
Section 221(g)Your case needs more documents or administrative processing before a decision can be made. It is not a refusal on the merits.

If you received a 221(g) slip rather than a 214(b) refusal, the situation is different and usually resolves once the requested documents or checks are complete. Our guide on what a 221(g) refusal means covers that process in detail.

Why UAE based applicants get refused under 214(b)

Common patterns we see among UAE residents include a short employment history in the UAE with no long term contract, being early in a career with a modest and easily replaceable salary, having no property, family or other significant commitments in the UAE or home country, or a travel history with few or no previous visas used compliantly. None of these alone guarantees a refusal, and none of them make approval impossible either. Consular officers weigh your whole profile together, not a single factor in isolation.

Can you appeal a 214(b) refusal?

There is no formal appeal process for a 214(b) refusal. The only route forward is to reapply, pay the visa fee again, and attend a new interview. There is no minimum waiting period required by law, but reapplying within days or weeks with the same documents and the same answers rarely changes the outcome. The applications that succeed on a second attempt are usually the ones where something genuinely changed, whether that is a longer job tenure, a promotion, new property or financial commitments, or simply a clearer, more specific explanation of the trip and its purpose.

How to strengthen a reapplication

Focus on documents and answers that show concrete ties rather than general statements. A confirmed return flight and hotel booking help, but stronger evidence includes an employment letter that specifies your role, salary and approved leave dates, proof of ongoing commitments such as a lease, mortgage or dependents, and a clear, specific and honest explanation of why you are travelling and when you plan to return. Avoid vague answers about the purpose of the trip, since consular officers are trained to probe for inconsistency. Our visa approval chance calculator can give you a general sense of where your profile may need strengthening before you reapply, and our visa document checklist generator builds a document list for a US visitor visa application.

How Visa Doctor helps

We review 214(b) refusal cases from UAE based applicants regularly, and in most cases the underlying issue is not a bad application, it is a thin one. We help you put together a more complete picture of your ties and purpose before you go back for a second interview, and we are honest if we think your current profile needs more time to build up before reapplying makes sense. Frequently asked questions

What does a 214(b) refusal mean for my US visa application?

It means the consular officer was not convinced during your interview that you have strong enough ties to guarantee you will return home after your visit. It is not a record of wrongdoing and does not permanently bar you from applying again.

How long do I need to wait before reapplying after a 214(b) refusal?

There is no mandatory waiting period. That said, reapplying immediately with the same documents and answers rarely produces a different result, so it is usually worth waiting until your circumstances or evidence of ties have genuinely improved.

Can I get a refund of the visa fee after a 214(b) refusal?

No, the MRV visa application fee is non refundable and must be paid again for each new application, including a reapplication after a 214(b) refusal.

Does a 214(b) refusal affect future visa applications to other countries?

A US refusal is generally specific to the US visa system, though some other countries ask on their application forms whether you have ever been refused a visa anywhere, so you should answer honestly. See our guide on how a visa refusal affects future applications for more detail.

Is a 214(b) refusal the same as a permanent ban from the United States?

No. It is a decision on that specific application only. You are free to reapply at any time, and many applicants are approved on a later attempt once their circumstances or documentation have improved.
