If you live in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah and you have been trying to get a parent, sibling or friend over for a short visit, there is a useful change worth knowing about. In a media release dated 1 July 2026, VFS Global confirmed that UAE immigration authorities have extended the pre approved 14 day visit entry permit for Emirates passengers to six additional nationalities.
The scheme itself is not new. What is new is who can use it. Passport holders from South Africa, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Kenya and Vietnam have now been added, provided they meet a fairly specific set of conditions. This matters in the UAE because those six nationalities make up a very large share of the friends and relatives that UAE residents try to bring over each year, and because the alternative route, a standard sponsored UAE visit visa, takes more paperwork and more time.
It is worth being precise about what this is. It is a pre approved entry permit for a short visit, arranged around an Emirates ticket. It is not a residence visa, it is not a multiple entry tourist visa, and it does not replace the normal UAE visit visa system. It is a faster lane for a narrow group of travellers.
Every condition below has to be met at the same time. Missing one of them puts your visitor back on the standard route.
| Condition | What the rule says |
|---|---|
| Nationality (newly added) | South Africa, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Kenya, Vietnam |
| Airline | Travelling to the UAE on Emirates, holding a confirmed onward or return Emirates ticket |
| Residence held | A valid residence permit from Australia, Canada, an EU member state, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Singapore or the United Kingdom, or a United States Green Card |
| Residence validity | At least six months remaining validity on that residence permit |
| Length of stay | More than 48 hours and a maximum of 14 days |
| Timing | Intended date of entry must fall within 30 days of submitting the application |
| Where to apply | Online through the VFS Global Dubai Visa Processing Centre portal |
For applicants relying on United States residence, the release is explicit: a valid permanent residency, meaning a Green Card, counts. A US student visa does not. So a Filipino or Kenyan national studying in the United States on a student visa cannot use this route, even though they live in the US lawfully. That single line has caused a lot of confusion already, and it is the kind of detail that gets a traveller turned away at check in rather than at the border.
Most people who ask us about this scheme do not actually qualify for it, and it is better to know that early. It does not help if:
In all of those cases the ordinary UAE visit visa route applies, and the paperwork is what it always was: sponsor documents, proof of accommodation, tickets and financial evidence. Our visa document checklist generator is the fastest way to see what a specific case needs.
Three practical steps, in order.
The residence permit is the gate. Ask your visitor to photograph both sides of their residence card or the visa page in their passport and send you the expiry date. If it expires within six months of the intended travel date, stop here and plan a standard visit visa instead. Our passport and travel index is a useful sanity check on what a given passport can and cannot do without a visa.
The permit is tied to a confirmed onward or return Emirates ticket, and the intended entry date has to fall within 30 days of the application. That means you cannot apply nine months ahead of a December visit. Work backwards: fix the travel dates, confirm the Emirates booking, then apply inside the 30 day window.
A stay of under 48 hours does not qualify, and neither does a stay of 15 days. If your visitor wants three weeks, this is the wrong product and applying anyway wastes time. Budget for the alternative early using our visa cost calculator.
The direction of travel is consistent. Governments across the region are moving entry decisions online and away from the counter, and pre approval schemes tied to an airline booking are part of that. Europe has done the same thing at its borders: the EU Entry/Exit System became fully operational on 10 April 2026, replacing passport stamps with digital records, which we explained in our guide to what the Entry/Exit System means for UAE residents. The UK has moved to a fully digital eVisa, covered in our eVisa explainer.
The practical effect for UAE residents is the same everywhere: the systems get faster for people who fit the box exactly, and less forgiving for everyone else. Fitting the box is now a documentation problem rather than a queueing problem. If you are planning your own outbound trip, the Schengen 90/180 calculator and the visa approval chance calculator are the two tools worth running first.
We are a documentation company, not a government office, so we will not pretend we can put your visitor on a scheme they do not qualify for. What we do is check eligibility against the published conditions in one sitting, and then either confirm that the pre approved route is open or build the standard UAE visit visa file properly the first time.
In practice that means reading the residence permit and ticket carefully, spotting the disqualifiers before you pay anything, and assembling the sponsor documents, accommodation proof and financial evidence in the format the authorities actually expect. If you are also planning outbound travel, we handle Schengen, UK, US, Ireland and Australia files from Dubai. You can see the full list on our visa services page, the country detail on our United Kingdom and United States pages, and the rest of our free tools on the visa tools page.
If a previous refusal sits on your visitor record, read our guide on whether a visa refusal affects future applications before you apply again. If you are the one sponsoring the visit, our guide to writing a sponsor letter from Dubai covers the document most often written badly. Travellers who already move visa free should check the current position in our list of visa free countries for UAE residents.

The published release confirms the eligibility conditions and the application route but not a price. Fees for UAE entry permits are set by the authorities and collected through the application portal, so check the current amount in the VFS Global Dubai Visa Processing Centre portal at the time you apply rather than relying on a figure quoted anywhere else.
Treat 14 days as the ceiling and plan around it. Extension of any UAE entry permit is a matter for the immigration authorities and is not something the scheme itself promises. If the visit genuinely needs to be longer, apply for a standard visit visa with the right duration from the start.
Not for this scheme. The residence permit that matters is the one your visitor holds in a listed country such as the UK, Canada or an EU state. Your UAE residence is what makes you eligible to sponsor a standard visit visa instead, which is a separate route with separate paperwork.
The scheme is nationality based, so the passport they travel on decides eligibility, and it must match the ticket and the application. If one of their passports is from a listed nationality and the other is not, get advice before booking, because mismatched documents at check in are a common and avoidable problem.
No. Visa on arrival is a separate entitlement that depends on nationality alone. This is a pre approved permit applied for online before travel, tied to an Emirates booking and to residence in a listed country. Check your visitor position on visa on arrival first, because if they already get entry on arrival they may not need this at all.
