Quick answer: For a Schengen visa from the UAE, your employment letter should be on company letterhead, addressed to the consulate, and state your job title, joining date, salary, that your leave has been approved for exact dates, and that your position is held for you on return. An NOC is the same document written as a no objection statement. One letter that contains all of it is enough; you do not need two. The most common failures are a letter that omits approved leave dates, dates that contradict your flight booking, and a letter signed by someone with no authority whose contact details cannot be verified.

Why this one page decides more than people expect

Applicants from Dubai tend to worry about bank balances and barely think about the employment letter. Consulates read them in the opposite order.

The reason is that a visa officer is trying to answer one question above all others: will this person go back to the UAE at the end of the trip? Money in an account proves you can afford the holiday. It says nothing about whether you will return. A verifiable job that you are expected back at on a specific date is the strongest ordinary evidence most applicants have, and it is the document that speaks directly to the ground of refusal that reads “intention to leave the territory could not be ascertained”.

That makes the letter worth more attention than a two line template from HR. It is also worth understanding that it is a document about you written by someone else, which is precisely why it carries weight, and precisely why consulates check it.

Employment letter or NOC: is there a difference?

In UAE practice the two terms are used almost interchangeably, and the distinction confuses applicants unnecessarily.

An employment letter is a factual statement of your employment: role, tenure, salary, status. An NOC, or no objection certificate, is a statement that your employer has no objection to you travelling for a stated period. In the Gulf the same letter usually does both jobs, and that is what consulates expect to receive.

What matters is not the heading at the top. It is whether the content covers everything the officer needs. A document titled “NOC” that omits your salary is weaker than a document titled “Employment Letter” that includes approved leave dates and a return commitment. Do not chase the label; check the contents against the list below.

What your letter must contain

ElementWhy the consulate wants itCommon mistake
Company letterhead with address, phone, email, trade licence or establishment detailsThe company must be verifiable as a real UAE entityA plain page with a logo pasted at the top and no contact details
Addressed to the consulate or embassy of the destination countryShows the letter was written for this application, not recycled“To whom it may concern” for a trip that has a known destination
Your full name exactly as printed in your passportThe file must match across every documentShort name, initials, or a different spelling from the passport
Job title, date of joining, and current monthly salaryEstablishes stability and cross checks your bank statementsSalary omitted, or a figure that does not match salary credits in the statement
Approved leave with exact start and end datesThis is the return commitment. Without it the letter loses most of its value“Has applied for leave” or no dates at all
A statement that the position will be resumed on the stated return dateDirectly answers the doubt about your intention to leave EuropeLeft out entirely, which is the single most frequent omission
Who is paying for the tripClarifies whether this is self funded or employer fundedAmbiguity that contradicts what the cover letter claims
Signature, printed name, designation, company stamp, and dateMakes the letter verifiable by a phone callUnsigned, undated, or signed by a colleague of equal rank

The date problem, which causes more refusals than anything else here

Almost every employment letter failure we see in Dubai comes down to dates that do not agree with each other.

Your letter says leave is approved from the 3rd to the 17th. Your flight booking departs on the 1st. Your hotel reservation runs to the 20th. Your visa application form asks for a different intended period again. Individually each document looks fine. Read together, they tell the officer that at least one of them is not real, and the file gets ticked for unreliable information about the purpose and conditions of the stay.

Before you submit anything, lay the documents side by side and check that the leave dates, flight dates, accommodation dates and the dates on your application form form one coherent story, with the leave period covering the whole trip including travel days. If they do not match, fix the letter rather than hoping nobody notices. Our guides to Schengen refusal codes and dummy tickets from Dubai cover what happens when they do not.

If you are self employed or a business owner

You cannot write yourself a letter of leave approval in any convincing sense, so the evidence has to come from the structure of the business instead.

The usual set is a valid trade licence, the memorandum or partnership documents showing your ownership, company bank statements alongside your personal ones, and a letter on company letterhead signed by you as owner or by a partner, explaining the nature of the business, your role in it, and the arrangements for it to continue during your absence. That last element is the point: what a consulate wants to see is a business that is real, that generates income, and that gives you a reason to come back to the UAE.

A free zone licence is entirely acceptable. What is not acceptable is a licence with no corresponding financial activity, because a dormant company reads as a document created for the application rather than a genuine tie.

If you are a housewife, dependant, student, or between jobs

Not everyone has an employer, and this does not disqualify you. It shifts where the weight falls.

If you are on a spouse or family residence visa, the evidence is your sponsor’s file: their employment letter meeting every requirement above, their bank statements, their passport and residence visa copies, and proof of the relationship such as a marriage or birth certificate, attested where required. A short covering letter from the sponsor confirming they are funding the trip and that you are travelling together, or that they consent to you travelling, ties it together.

Students provide an enrolment letter and a no objection letter from the institution, plus the parent or sponsor’s financials. Retired applicants provide pension evidence and asset documentation. For anyone travelling with children where one parent is not on the trip, see our guide to travelling with children and consent letters from the UAE.

Practical points specific to the UAE

Attestation is generally not required for an employment letter for a Schengen tourist visa. Consulates want it verifiable, not legalised. If a specific consulate does ask for attestation, it will say so on its own requirements page, which is the only source worth trusting on this.

Arabic is not required. English is accepted throughout, and a bilingual letterhead is fine.

Freshness matters. A letter dated four months before your appointment invites the question of whether your leave is still approved. Aim to have it issued within roughly a month of submission.

And remember which centre you are actually dealing with, because jurisdiction affects logistics rather than the letter itself but derails plenty of applications regardless. France has no visa application centre in Dubai and VFS lists Abu Dhabi for the whole UAE. Spain goes through BLS International rather than VFS. The Italy centre in Dubai serves Dubai and the Northern Emirates only. Germany runs a waitlist and separates Dubai and the Northern Emirates from Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. Our pieces on what to do when no appointments are available and which country gives the fastest appointment from Dubai go into the timing, and what happens at VFS Dubai biometrics covers submission day itself.

How Visa Doctor helps

We read employment letters against the exact requirements of the consulate you are applying to, and we tell you what is missing before you queue at a visa centre rather than after a refusal letter arrives.

In practice that usually means one of three things: giving you precise wording to take back to HR so you only ask once, catching a date conflict between your letter and your bookings, or restructuring the evidence entirely when you are self employed or not employed at all. It is unglamorous work and it is the difference between an approval and a wasted appointment.

To prepare on your own, the visa document checklist generator produces a list for your nationality and destination, the visa cost calculator sets a realistic budget, and the visa approval chance calculator highlights weaknesses in advance. Financial evidence is covered in bank statements and balances for a visa from Dubai, allowance tracking in the Schengen 90/180 calculator, and everything else sits in visa tools. The same letter standards apply for the UK, the United States, Ireland and Australia. Frequently asked questions

Do I need both an employment letter and an NOC?

No. In UAE practice one letter covering your employment details and your approved leave with a return commitment satisfies both. Submitting two documents saying similar things adds nothing and creates a further opportunity for the dates to contradict each other.

Does my employment letter need to be attested?

For a Schengen tourist visa this is generally not required. Consulates want the letter to be verifiable by telephone or email rather than legalised. Always check the specific requirements page of the consulate you are applying to, since individual missions can differ.

What if my company will not mention my salary?

Ask whether they will issue a separate salary certificate, which many UAE employers prefer to provide. If neither is possible, your salary credits in six months of bank statements plus a labour contract can carry the point, though the file is stronger when the letter states it directly.

My leave was approved verbally and HR is slow. Can I submit without the letter?

You can submit an incomplete file, but you should expect a refusal on the ground that the purpose and conditions of your stay were not justified. Waiting for a proper letter and taking a later appointment is almost always faster than being refused and starting again.

How recent does the letter need to be?

There is no universal rule, but roughly a month before submission is a sensible target. A letter issued several months earlier raises the question of whether the approved leave still stands, and that is not a question you want an officer asking.
