Quick answer: Yes. Pakistani passport holders need a UK Standard Visitor Visa — Pakistan is not visa-exempt, so the UK ETA is not available. If you are a Pakistani resident of the UAE, you apply from here: online form, then biometrics at a VFS centre in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, using your Emirates ID and residence visa. Applications from UAE residents are generally viewed more favourably than those filed from Pakistan, because your UAE job and residence are strong evidence you will return.

Pakistani nationals are one of the largest communities in the UAE, and UK refusal rates for Pakistani applicants are historically among the higher ones — almost always for the same fixable reasons. This guide explains what to submit and how to build a file that a UK caseworker can approve.

You need a Standard Visitor Visa

For tourism, visiting family, or business meetings, Pakistani passport holders apply for the UK Standard Visitor Visa (up to six months per visit). Frequent travellers can request a long-term visitor visa valid 2, 5 or 10 years, though each individual stay is still capped at six months. The ETA does not apply to Pakistani nationals — do not book flights assuming it does.

Why applying from the UAE is an advantage

UK caseworkers assess whether you are a genuine visitor who will leave at the end of your stay. A Pakistani applicant applying from Pakistan must prove this from scratch. A Pakistani applicant applying from the UAE arrives with built-in evidence: an employment contract, salary transfers into a UAE bank, a tenancy contract, an Emirates ID, and a residence visa with time still to run. Present all of it — it is the single biggest lever on your outcome.

Documents to prepare

  • Pakistani passport (plus previous passports showing travel history).
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID with reasonable validity remaining.
  • Bank statements, last 6 months, stamped by the bank, showing regular salary credits.
  • Salary certificate / NOC from your employer, or trade licence if self-employed.
  • Tenancy contract (Ejari) or proof of where you live in the UAE.
  • Flight and hotel reservations, plus a day-by-day itinerary.
  • If visiting family: invitation letter plus the host’s UK immigration status and address proof.

Generate your exact list with the document checklist generator, estimate fees with the cost calculator, and prepare a cover letter and invitation letter.

The three things that cause most refusals

1. Unexplained money. A large deposit landing in your account days before applying is the classic red flag. Caseworkers want to see funds that built up naturally from your salary. If someone is sponsoring you, say so openly and document their finances too.

2. Weak ties. If your residence visa is close to expiry, or you cannot show a job to return to, the officer has little reason to believe you will leave the UK. Renew your residence before applying if you can.

3. Inconsistency. Dates on your itinerary must match your hotel bookings, your cover letter and your form. Contradictions read as carelessness at best.

Check your profile against these with our approval-chance estimator, and if you have been refused before, run the wording through the refusal decoder before reapplying.

Frequently asked questions

Can Pakistani citizens use the UK ETA?

No. The ETA is only for visa-exempt nationalities. Pakistani passport holders need a full Standard Visitor Visa.

Is it easier to get a UK visa from Dubai than from Pakistan?

Applying as a UAE resident usually presents a stronger case, because your UAE job, salary, tenancy and residence visa are clear evidence you will return. The decision still depends on your individual circumstances.

How much bank balance do Pakistani applicants need?

There is no official minimum. Show enough to cover the entire trip comfortably, built up steadily from salary rather than deposited in a lump sum just before applying.

Do Pakistani nationals need a UK transit visa?

In most cases yes, even for airside connections. Check your specific routing before booking.

How long does it take?

Standard processing is commonly around three weeks, but apply 4–6 weeks ahead to allow for peak-season delays.

Visa rules change frequently. This guide is general information; always confirm current requirements on the official UK government website, or contact our agents for advice on your case. Visa Doctor is a private service provider and does not issue visas.
