Quick answer: Since 6 October 2026 the UK has been upgrading airport eGates so that eligible travellers can be checked by a face scan without placing their passport on the reader. For now only British citizens can use the contactless gates, and only a small number are live, at Birmingham and East Midlands airports. Other eGate eligible nationalities are due to follow, with all UK airports expected to have them by early 2027. Nothing changes about who needs a UK visa or an ETA, and you must still carry your passport.

If you live in Dubai or Abu Dhabi and fly to the UK, you may have seen headlines saying UK airports are going contactless. The change is real, but narrower than many reports suggest. It changes how some travellers prove their identity at the eGate. It does not change who may travel to the UK, what permission you need before you fly, or which passports can use the eGates at all. Here is what GOV.UK says today and what it means for the passports UAE residents hold.

What is changing at UK airports

On 6 October 2026 the Home Office and Border Force announced that eGates at UK airports will gradually switch to contactless technology. At an upgraded gate the process works like this:

  1. You walk up to the eGate and the gate takes your photo.
  2. The system compares that live image with the immigration, travel and passport information the UK already holds about you.
  3. Once the checks are complete, the gate opens and you walk through without putting your passport on the reader.

The Home Office says its testing found the contactless system up to 25% faster than using a passport on an eGate. All the usual immigration and security checks still take place. The GOV.UK factsheet is clear that passengers must continue to travel with a valid passport, and Border Force officers continue to watch the gates.

Who can use contactless eGates now

The rollout is phased. According to the GOV.UK factsheet, updated on 20 October 2026:

  • Who: initially, British citizens only. Other eGate eligible nationalities will be able to use contactless gates in the future.
  • Where: a small number of contactless eGates are currently available at Birmingham Airport and East Midlands Airport.
  • Next: the rollout is planned for the 13 airports that already have eGates: Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, Heathrow, London City, Luton, Manchester, Newcastle and Stansted.
  • When: the Home Office expects contactless eGates to be available at all UK airports by early 2027.

So if you are a British citizen living in the UAE and your flight lands at Birmingham or East Midlands, you may already be offered the contactless option. Everyone else should expect to use the eGates or the Border Force desk exactly as before, at least for now.

Can you use the eGates at all? Check this first

Contactless gates do not open the eGates to anyone new. GOV.UK says eGate eligibility remains unchanged. Under the current GOV.UK guide you can normally use the eGates if you have a biometric passport, are 8 or older (8 to 17 year olds must be with an adult), are at least 120cm tall, and either:

  • are a British or Irish citizen; or
  • have valid UK permission, such as an ETA, an eVisa or a digital record of exemption, and are a national of an EU country, Australia, Canada, Iceland, Japan, Liechtenstein, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland or the USA, or a member of the Registered Traveller Service.

This is the part many UAE residents miss. Emirati, Saudi, Indian, Pakistani and Filipino passports, for example, are not on that list, and the GOV.UK list of passports that can join Registered Traveller does not include the UAE or any other Gulf state. If your passport is not eligible for the eGates, you see a Border Force officer, and the contactless upgrade does not change that. Travellers using a national ID card cannot use the eGates either.

What does not change for UAE residents

  • You still need permission to travel. A contactless gate is not a visa, an eVisa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). If your nationality needs a visa or an ETA, you still need it before you board in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Our guide on which nationalities need a UK visa in 2026 sets out the rules by passport, and Gulf citizens can check whether GCC nationals need a UK visa or just an ETA.
  • Keep your passport with you. If the system needs further checks, you will be told to place your passport on the reader or you will be sent to a Border Force officer, as happens today.
  • Your digital status must be in order. GOV.UK lists a missing or invalid ETA, eVisa or digital exemption as one reason people are stopped at the eGates. If you hold a UK visa, make sure your eVisa is linked to the passport you travel on. Our UK eVisa guide explains how.
  • Dual British nationals should still travel on a valid British passport, or hold a Certificate of Entitlement, to avoid delays at the border.

What this means if you fly from Dubai or Abu Dhabi

For most UAE residents the trip is planned in exactly the same way as before. First, check whether your passport needs a UK visa or an ETA. Second, apply in good time and make sure your permission is linked to the passport you will carry. If you need an ETA, our note on the UK ETA fee rise to £20 covers what it costs today. Third, take that same passport to the airport and keep it on you after landing.

The contactless gate is a quicker way through arrivals for people who are already allowed to travel and already eligible for the eGates. It is not a new route into the UK, and it does not affect how a visa application is assessed.

How Visa Doctor helps

We help UAE residents work out whether they need a UK visa or an ETA, prepare the documents for a visit visa application, and check that the details on the form, the passport and the eVisa account match before you travel. We do not issue visas and cannot influence a Home Office decision, but we can help you present a complete and consistent application. See our visa services in Dubai for how we work.

Frequently asked questions

Can UAE residents use the UK contactless eGates now?

Only if they are British citizens. As of 25 October 2026, GOV.UK says contactless eGates are limited to British citizens and are live at a small number of gates at Birmingham and East Midlands airports. Other eGate eligible nationalities are expected to follow by early 2027.

Do I still need my passport if the eGates are contactless?

Yes. GOV.UK says passengers must continue to travel with a valid passport and keep it with them. You may still be asked to place it on the reader or to see a Border Force officer.

Does a contactless eGate replace the UK ETA or visa?

No. If your nationality needs an ETA or a visa, you still need it before you travel. The gate only changes how your identity is checked when you arrive.

Can I use the UK eGates on an Emirati or Indian passport?

Not under the current GOV.UK eligibility list, which covers British and Irish citizens, nationals of the EU and a set list of other countries, and Registered Traveller members. Holders of other passports go to a Border Force officer, and the contactless upgrade does not change this.

Will contactless gates make my arrival quicker?

The Home Office says its testing found contactless gates up to 25% faster than placing a passport on an eGate. How long you queue on the day still depends on the airport, the time you land and whether further checks are needed.

Can children use the UK eGates?

Yes, if they are eligible. Since July 2026 children aged 8 and over can use the eGates, but anyone aged 8 to 17 must be with an adult, and the family goes through one person at a time.
