Quick answer: Yes. A domestic helper living in the UAE can apply for a Schengen visa to travel with the family that sponsors them, but the helper applies on their own file. Consulates look at the helper’s UAE residence visa, employment status, nationality rules and the sponsor’s documents together. A clear sponsor letter, proof the employer is paying for the trip, and evidence the helper will return to the UAE are the points that decide most cases.

Many UAE families want their nanny, housemaid or driver to come along on a European holiday, usually to help with young children or elderly parents. The helper does not travel under the employer’s visa. Each person needs their own Schengen visa, and a helper’s application is assessed like any other, with a few extra questions about who is paying and why the helper is coming. This guide sets out how it works, the documents involved, and the mistakes to avoid.

Does the helper need a visa?

That depends on the helper’s passport, not on the employer’s nationality. Many nationalities that commonly work as domestic helpers in the UAE need a Schengen visa. Check the passport on our passport travel index first. Having a UAE residence visa does not remove the requirement. The residence visa is simply one of the key documents showing the helper’s ties to the UAE.

What the consulate wants to understand

The consulate is asking four things. Who is this person? Why is she or he travelling? Who pays? Will she or he return to the UAE? Your documents should answer each question without leaving gaps.

QuestionDocument that answers itCommon weak point
Who is the applicant?Passport, UAE residence visa, Emirates IDResidence visa expiring soon after the trip
Why is the helper travelling?Sponsor letter explaining the role during the trip, matching family itineraryVague wording such as “for holiday” with no link to the family
Who pays?Sponsor’s bank statements, sponsorship or cost covering letterLetter without the sponsor’s own statements to back it up
Will the helper return?Employment contract, no objection letter, proof of ongoing job and family tiesNo evidence the job continues after the trip
Is the trip real?Flights, accommodation, insurance, same dates as the familyDifferent dates or hotels from the sponsor’s file

Use the document checklist generator to build the standard list, and read the common form mistakes before you fill in anything. Photos follow the usual rules, see our photo guide.

Applying together with the family

The helper and the family should apply to the same country, usually the country of longest stay, and ideally on the same dates with the same bookings. Their files are separate, but they should be consistent. Spain uses BLS International, not VFS. France has no visa centre in Dubai, and VFS lists Abu Dhabi for the whole UAE. Italy’s Dubai centre serves Dubai and the Northern Emirates only. Germany runs a waitlist and splits Dubai and Northern Emirates from Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. Book the helper’s biometrics at the same visit if the centre allows, so you can see what to expect at biometrics.

The sponsor letter

The sponsor letter should be short and factual. It should state the helper’s name, passport number, job and length of service, the purpose of the trip, the dates, and that the sponsor covers costs. Attach the sponsor’s passport copy, Emirates ID and bank statements. Avoid exaggerating the helper’s role. A plain statement that the helper will assist with the family’s children during the trip is clearer than a long justification.

Common reasons helper applications are refused

Consulates tend to refuse when the helper has been in the UAE only a short time, the residence visa is near expiry, the sponsor’s funds do not support two or more applicants, or the paperwork suggests the helper may not come back. Problems also arise when the family and helper submit conflicting itineraries. If a refusal happens, review the stated reason before reapplying, see how to reapply and how residence validity affects your application.

How Visa Doctor helps

We prepare the helper’s file and the family file together so the dates, funds and bookings agree. We draft the sponsor letter, check the residence visa validity, and tell you honestly if the application looks risky before you pay for anything. We do not issue visas and cannot promise an outcome. Frequently asked questions

Can my helper travel on my visa?

No. Each traveller needs their own Schengen visa and files their own application, even when travelling with the sponsor family.

Who pays for the helper’s trip?

Usually the sponsor, which must be shown with a sponsor letter and the sponsor’s own bank statements.

Does the helper need a no objection letter?

A letter from the sponsor confirming employment and consent to travel is the standard way to show the job continues after the trip.

Should the helper apply to the same country as the family?

Yes. Apply to the same main destination with consistent dates, accommodation and insurance.

What if the helper’s residence visa expires soon?

Renew first if possible. A residence visa close to expiry weakens the evidence of ties to the UAE.
