A photo looks like the easiest item in a Schengen file, yet it is one of the most common reasons an applicant is turned away at the counter or asked to come back. The rules follow international passport photo standards, and consulates in the UAE apply them strictly because the picture is stored with your biometric record. This guide explains the usual requirements for UAE applicants and how to avoid the mistakes we see most often. Pair it with our document checklist generator so nothing else is missed.
| Requirement | What it normally means |
|---|---|
| Size | 35 mm wide by 45 mm high, printed on good quality photo paper |
| Age of the photo | Recent, commonly taken within the last six months, and it must look like you today |
| Background | Plain, even and light, with no patterns, shadows or objects behind you |
| Face position | Looking straight at the camera, head upright, whole face from chin to top of head visible; the face should fill most of the frame (around 32 to 36 mm from chin to crown is the usual guide) |
| Expression | Neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible |
| Glasses and headwear | No tinted lenses or glare; headwear only for religious reasons, with the full face still visible from chin to forehead |
| Quality | Sharp, correct colour, no filters, retouching, creases or ink marks |
These are the common rules, but each consulate can add its own detail. Always check the requirements for the country you are applying to, especially if your application goes through VFS Dubai biometrics or BLS for Spain.
Using a photo from your last passport renewal, or one that has been smoothed or brightened with an app, is a frequent problem. Officers compare the photo with you at the counter and with your passport. A recent unedited picture avoids the issue.
A shadow behind the head or across the face is the typical failure of a photo taken at home. If you use a photo studio, ask for the Schengen visa format rather than a passport format for another country, because sizes differ. For example, many other visa photos use a different size.
US, UK and Schengen photos do not share the same dimensions. Do not reuse a photo made for another application without checking the size. If you are also planning a UK trip, our UK visa guide explains that application separately.
Many photo studios across Dubai and the Northern Emirates produce visa format photos quickly, and some application centres have a photo service on site. Fees and availability change, so confirm with your centre before you rely on it. Whichever you choose, take the photo before your appointment day rather than at the last minute, since a rejected photo can cost you the time slot you waited for. Our guide to tracking your visa and passport collection explains what happens after you submit.
The photo is one of several small items that trip people up. A mismatch between the name on your passport and the name on your forms, an old booking, or missing insurance cause the same kind of delay. Read our guides to application form mistakes, Schengen travel insurance minimums and applying with a new job or residence visa. If you have been refused before, see reapplying after a visa refusal in the UAE.
We check your photo, forms and documents against the destination country requirements before you attend your appointment, so small errors do not cost you a slot. Browse our visa services in Dubai or use the visa tools to plan your application. We do not issue visas and cannot promise an outcome.

The usual size is 35 mm by 45 mm. Confirm with the consulate or application centre, because individual countries can add detail.
Only if it is recent and meets the current requirements. Most consulates expect a recent photo, commonly taken within the last six months.
Clear glasses without glare may be accepted at some centres, but removing them is safer. Tinted lenses are not acceptable.
Headwear is generally allowed only for religious reasons, and your full face from chin to forehead must remain visible.
Some centres offer a photo service, but availability and prices change. Check with your centre in advance and do not rely on it on the day.
