Quick answer: A fake or unlicensed visa agent in Dubai usually shows the same pattern: a guaranteed approval, an appointment slot that appeared out of nowhere, payment requested in cash or to a personal bank account, and no proper receipt or trade licence to show for it. A legitimate documentation company works from a licensed office, gives you a written scope of what they are charging for, and never promises an outcome that only the consulate can decide. If in doubt, ask for the trade licence number and check it before you pay anything.

Why Dubai has a fake visa agent problem

Genuine demand for Schengen, UK and US visa help from Dubai is high, appointment slots at VFS Global and BLS International genuinely do get scarce around peak season, and the paperwork genuinely does confuse first time applicants. All three of those facts are true, and all three are exploited by people running informal visa businesses out of a phone number and a social media page rather than a licensed company. The recent BLS Spain fraud probe involving UAE applicants and the tightening of BLS self booking rules both happened because middlemen were inserting themselves between applicants and the official system, sometimes reselling appointment slots, sometimes taking money for services that were never delivered.

None of this means every independent agent is dishonest. It means the burden is on you to check before you hand over a passport or a payment, in the same way you would check a contractor before letting them into your home.

Red flags that signal a scam

  • A guaranteed approval. No agent, licensed or not, can guarantee a visa outcome. Only the consulate decides. Anyone promising a guaranteed yes is either lying or planning to disappear with your money before the answer comes back.
  • An appointment slot appears instantly for a country where the official system shows nothing available for weeks. This usually means the slot was reserved using someone else’s identity or a bot, which can get your application cancelled even after you have paid.
  • Payment requested in cash, or to a personal bank account or personal name rather than a company account. A registered business invoices from a company name and can issue a proper receipt.
  • No office you can visit, or a WhatsApp only operation with a UAE number but no verifiable address.
  • Pressure to decide immediately, often paired with a claim that the slot or the offer will disappear within the hour.
  • They ask to hold your original passport for an extended period with no written acknowledgement of receipt.

What “licensed” actually means

A licensed visa documentation company in the UAE is registered with a specific free zone or mainland authority, has a trade licence number you can look up, and operates under consumer protection rules that an informal individual does not. Licensing does not mean the company works for the government or can influence a consulate’s decision, since no private company in Dubai issues visas or controls approval rates. What it does mean is that if something goes wrong, there is a registered legal entity you can hold accountable, rather than a phone number that goes dark.

How to verify an agent before you pay

Ask for the trade licence number directly and take a moment to note it down. A legitimate business will give this without hesitation. You can also ask for a written breakdown of what exactly you are paying for: document review, appointment booking assistance, translation, or courier costs, rather than one vague lump sum described as a visa fee. Consulate and embassy fees themselves are paid directly to VFS Global, BLS International, or the consulate, never in cash to an individual claiming to pass it on. If an agent insists on collecting the government fee in cash on your behalf, treat that as a serious warning sign rather than a convenience.

Red flagWhat a licensed agency does instead
Guarantees approvalGives an honest read on your chances, including when the answer is no
Cash payment onlyIssues an invoice from a registered company and accepts traceable payment
Holds your passport with no paperworkProvides a signed acknowledgement listing what was handed over and when
Appointment appears from nowhereBooks through the official VFS Global or BLS International system in your name
No visitable officeOperates from a listed, checkable business address in Dubai

What to do if you already paid a suspicious agent

Stop any further payment immediately and request your passport and original documents back in writing. If the agent booked or claims to have booked an appointment, verify it directly through the official VFS Global or BLS International system rather than taking their word for it, since a cancelled or fake booking can leave you with no slot at all close to your travel date. If money was paid by card or bank transfer, contact your bank about a possible chargeback or dispute. Genuine fraud, including anything resembling the patterns seen in the BLS Spain probe, should also be reported to Dubai Economy and Tourism or the relevant free zone authority.

How Visa Doctor helps

We are a licensed documentation company registered with SPC Free Zone, not an informal agent, and we will tell you honestly when your chances of approval are weak rather than take a fee and hope for the best. Every appointment we assist with is booked through the official VFS Global or BLS International system in your own name, every payment is invoiced, and we never ask to hold your passport without a signed receipt. If you are unsure whether an offer you have received elsewhere is legitimate, our guide on how to choose a visa agency in Dubai goes into more detail, and our document checklist generator, visa cost calculator and visa approval chance calculator let you prepare your own file with confidence rather than relying on someone else’s promises. If you are applying with no personal income, our guide to Schengen visas for unemployed and dependent applicants is a useful next read, and single parent families should see our guide on Schengen visas for single parents travelling with children.

Frequently asked questions

Can a visa agent guarantee my Schengen visa will be approved?

No. Only the consulate decides on an application. Any agent guaranteeing approval is making a promise they cannot keep.

Is it normal for an agent to ask for my passport in advance?

It can be normal for document preparation, but it should always come with a signed, dated acknowledgement listing exactly what was handed over.

Are all unlicensed agents scammers?

Not necessarily, but an unlicensed operator gives you no legal recourse if something goes wrong, which is why checking the trade licence before paying matters.

How do I check if a company is really licensed in Dubai?

Ask for the trade licence number and the issuing authority, whether that is a mainland licence or a free zone such as SPC Free Zone, and note it down before proceeding.

What should I do if an agent already has my passport and is not responding?

Contact Dubai Economy and Tourism or the relevant free zone authority to report the issue, and if you paid by card, contact your bank about a dispute at the same time.
