What is a Sweden Schengen Visa?
A Sweden Schengen visa is a short-stay Type C visa that lets UAE residents enter Sweden and travel freely across all 29 Schengen Area member countries. It is required for non-GCC nationals living in the UAE. UAE passport holders are exempt for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, so this page is for the expatriate residents of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates who do apply.
One change makes almost every older Sweden guide aimed at UAE residents out of date. On 2 March 2026 Sweden moved its visa decisions out of Abu Dhabi entirely. You still lodge the application and give fingerprints in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, but a Swedish officer at the Regional Migration Hub in Amman, Jordan decides it. That resets the realistic timeline from fifteen days to four or five weeks.
The main destination rule still governs where you apply. A Schengen visa is issued by one country but you do not choose which: you apply where you will spend the most nights, and where nights split evenly, to the country you enter first. Sweden is frequently one leg of a Nordic itinerary taking in Norway, Denmark or Finland, so this is a live question rather than a technicality.
Sweden Visa Key Details
- 📌 Visa type: Schengen Short-Stay Visa (Type C)
- 📌 Maximum stay: up to 90 days within any 180-day period
- 📌 Entries: usually single; only 507 of the visas Sweden issued in the UAE in 2025 were multiple entry, 13.9 per cent
- 📌 Sweden visa fee: EUR 90, published as AED 365, for applicants aged 12 and over; EUR 45 or AED 183 for children aged 6 to 11; under-6s free
- 📌 Reduced fees: EUR 35 under EU visa facilitation agreements, EUR 67.50 for Cape Verdean nationals
- 📌 Service fee: EUR 35, or AED 149.72 including taxes, in cash at VFS Global; the highest Schengen service fee in the Emirates
- 📌 Sweden visa application centre: VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, either one
- 📌 Decided in: the Regional Migration Hub in Amman, Jordan, since 2 March 2026
- 📌 Processing time: 15 calendar days from the Migration Hub receiving the file, extendable to 45
- 📌 Realistic timeline: four to five weeks door to door
- 📌 Travel medical insurance: minimum EUR 30,000 of Schengen-wide cover
For a family of four the VFS service fee alone adds about AED 600 before a single consular fee, so budget it rather than discovering it at the counter.
Types of Sweden Visas Available from the UAE
Tourist visa (Type C): the standard route for Stockholm, Gothenburg, the archipelago and Lapland. Up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Business visa (Type C): for meetings, conferences and trade events, supported by an invitation from the Swedish host company alongside the standard Schengen file.
Visiting family or friends: the category that most reliably produces refusals here. An invitation from the host in Sweden, proof of relationship and evidence of who funds the trip matter more here than on most files.
Student and short-course visa: a Type C visa covers courses, exchanges and summer schools inside the 90-day limit, with an acceptance letter from the institution.
National D visa and residence permits: for study, work or family reunification beyond 90 days. These moved to Amman on 2 March 2026 with short-stay visas, so Abu Dhabi no longer handles them.
Airport transit visa (Type A): required only for certain nationalities passing through a Swedish airport without entering the Schengen Area.
Where UAE Residents Apply for a Sweden Visa
Sweden works through VFS Global, and both UAE centres are open to you whichever emirate you live in. There is no jurisdiction rule splitting Dubai from Abu Dhabi.
The Abu Dhabi centre is at the World Trade Centre Mall, Level B2, Khalifa Bin Zayed the First Street. The Dubai centre is at Wafi Mall, First Floor, Phase 5 Horus, Umm Hurair 2. Check that against whatever you have written down: VFS relocated within Wafi Mall in March 2025 and a number of pages still publish the old Phase 2 Falcon address.
What you cannot do at either centre is get a decision. The Swedish embassy in Abu Dhabi states that responsibility for migration and visa matters, including Schengen visas, national D visas and residence permits, transferred to the Embassy of Sweden in Amman on 2 March 2026. The embassy on Electra Street cannot help with a visa question; enquiries go to the Regional Migration Hub in Amman. Never send documents to Amman yourself: you submit at VFS and the file travels from there.
Sweden also publishes a blunt statement that the embassy does not cooperate with agents or other external actors offering services for payment, and that none can influence the processing time or the outcome. That applies to us as much as to anyone in Dubai. What preparation does is get the file right before it leaves the country, because a query raised in Amman costs a courier round trip.

How to Get a Sweden Schengen Tourist Visa from Dubai (Step-by-Step)
Applying for a Sweden visa from Dubai is straightforward as long as the timeline is set honestly at the start.
Sweden Visa Processing Time from the UAE
The published processing time is fifteen calendar days, extendable to forty-five. Read the wording carefully: that clock starts when the Migration Hub in Amman receives the application, not the day you attend VFS in Dubai. The file has to travel to Jordan first, and the decision has to travel back.
Sweden’s own guidance for the neighbouring market it runs the same way puts the realistic end-to-end figure at about twenty-five to thirty days. Plan on four to five weeks and do not book a non-refundable ticket against fifteen days. This is the most common cause of a missed trip on Swedish applications from the Emirates, and it is entirely predictable.
Appointment availability sits on top. Start six to eight weeks before travel, earlier for summer and Christmas. You may lodge up to six months ahead.
Why Choose Visa Doctor for Your Sweden Visa?
- ⭐ We plan against the real timeline: four to five weeks door to door, because the file is decided in Amman. Most Sweden pages still quote fifteen days.
- ⭐ Correct centre, correct address: VFS moved within Wafi Mall in March 2025 and old addresses are still in circulation.
- ⭐ Honest odds: Sweden refused 40.8 per cent of UAE applications in 2025 and issued only 13.9 per cent of approvals as multiple entry. You hear that before you pay.
- ⭐ Full cost up front: the EUR 35 VFS service fee is the highest in the Emirates and is charged per applicant, in cash. It is in our quote from the start.
- ⭐ Complete before it leaves the country: a query raised in Amman on an incomplete file costs a courier round trip.
- ⭐ UAE-based team: our Dubai Sports City office works with UAE residence visas, Emirates IDs and employer letters every day.
Frequently Asked Questions, Sweden Visa from Dubai
Is the Swedish embassy in Abu Dhabi still handling visas?
No. Since 2 March 2026 responsibility for Schengen visas, national D visas and residence permits has transferred to the Embassy of Sweden in Amman, Jordan. You still apply and give biometrics at VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, but the decision is taken in Jordan. Never send documents to Amman yourself.
How long does a Sweden visa really take from Dubai in 2026?
Plan on four to five weeks. The published figure is fifteen calendar days, extendable to forty-five, but that clock starts when the Migration Hub in Amman receives your file, not when you attend VFS. Courier time to Jordan and back sits outside it.
How much does a Sweden visa cost from the UAE?
EUR 90, published by Sweden as AED 365, for applicants aged 12 and over, and EUR 45 or AED 183 for children aged 6 to 11, under-6s free. VFS charges a further EUR 35, about AED 149.72 including taxes, in cash. Nationals under EU visa facilitation agreements pay EUR 35, Cape Verdeans EUR 67.50.
Why is the Sweden service fee so high?
VFS charges EUR 35 per application on Swedish files, the legal ceiling permitted under the Visa Code and roughly double what several other Schengen states charge in the same building. It is the highest service fee on any Schengen application in the Emirates, and for a family of four it adds about AED 600.
Which VFS centre do I use, Dubai or Abu Dhabi?
Either. Sweden applies no jurisdiction rule by emirate, so any UAE resident may use either Sweden visa application centre. Abu Dhabi is at the World Trade Centre Mall, Level B2, Khalifa Bin Zayed the First Street; Dubai is at Wafi Mall, First Floor, Phase 5 Horus, Umm Hurair 2, the current address after the March 2025 relocation.
Why is Sweden’s refusal rate from the UAE so high?
Sweden refused 40.8 per cent of UAE applications in 2025 on the European Commission’s figures, against a UAE-wide average of 23.9 per cent and Sweden’s own global rate of 22.9 per cent. Its Abu Dhabi operation received 6,312 applications, issued 3,654 plus 28 with limited territorial validity and refused 2,532. The gap is the applicant mix, with family visits the category that most often fails.
Will I get a multiple-entry Sweden visa?
Probably not. Only 507 of the visas Sweden issued from the UAE in 2025 were multiple entry, 13.9 per cent: the lowest share of any significant Schengen post in the Emirates, against Sweden’s global figure of 21.6 per cent. If you travel more than once a year, budget to apply again each time.
Can an agency speed up or influence a Sweden visa decision?
No. Sweden publishes a statement that the embassy does not cooperate with agents or other external actors who offer services for payment, and that none can influence the processing time or the outcome. What preparation does is get the file complete before it leaves the UAE.
Can I travel to other Schengen countries on a Sweden visa?
Yes. A Sweden Schengen visa is valid across all 29 Schengen Area member countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The main destination rule governs where you apply, so a Nordic trip weighted towards Norway or Denmark belongs to that country.
Do UAE nationals need a visa for Sweden?
No. UAE passport holders travel to Sweden and the wider Schengen Area visa-free for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Residents of other nationalities living in Dubai do need one.
