Quick answer: Yes, Indian passport holders need a Schengen Type C visa for Europe. As an Indian resident of the UAE you apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, not from India, using your Emirates ID and residence visa. You must apply to the consulate of your main destination (most nights), and your UAE residence must typically remain valid for around three months beyond your return date.

Indians are the largest expatriate community in the UAE and Europe is the top holiday destination, so this is one of the most common applications we handle. The process is straightforward when the file is built properly, and unnecessarily painful when it is not. Here is the 2026 walkthrough.

The visa you need

For tourism, family visits or business, Indian nationals apply for a Schengen Type C short-stay visa, allowing up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen area. It is a single visa valid in all Schengen states, but you must apply through the correct one. Work out your allowance with our 90/180 calculator.

Which consulate? Get this right first

You cannot pick the embassy with the shortest queue. The rule is: apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If nights are split evenly across countries, apply to your country of first entry. Applying to the wrong consulate gets the file rejected as inadmissible and you lose both the fee and your travel window. Popular choices from Dubai include ItalyFranceSpainGreece and Switzerland.

Documents for Indian applicants in the UAE

  • Indian passport, valid 3+ months beyond return, issued within the last 10 years, 2 blank pages.
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, ideally valid ~3 months past your return.
  • Application form and a compliant photo (verify with our photo checker).
  • Travel medical insurance, minimum EUR 30,000 cover, valid across Schengen.
  • Confirmed flight and hotel reservations plus a day-by-day itinerary.
  • Bank statements, last 3 to 6 months, stamped, showing regular salary credits.
  • Salary certificate / NOC from your employer, or trade licence if self-employed.
  • Tenancy contract (Ejari) and a cover letter.

Money: what consulates actually look for

There is no universal minimum balance, but each consulate expects you to cover roughly EUR 50 to 100 per day of your trip, plus flights and hotels already paid. What matters more than the number is the pattern: salary landing every month, a balance that grew steadily, no sudden lump sum deposited a week before applying. A large unexplained credit is the fastest way to raise doubt. Estimate a sensible figure with our bank balance calculator.

The appointment problem

For Indian applicants in the UAE, the hardest part is often not the documents, it is getting a slot. In peak season (summer, Diwali, Christmas) appointments at popular consulates in Dubai disappear weeks ahead. Start 6 to 8 weeks before travel, and do not book non-refundable flights before you have a confirmed appointment. If you are short on time, see our urgent Schengen service.

How Visa Doctor helps

We handle Schengen applications for Indian residents of the UAE end to end, identifying the correct consulate for your itinerary, securing appointments, arranging compliant insurance and reservations, reviewing your bank statements before submission, and writing the cover letter. Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for a Schengen visa from Dubai with an Indian passport?

Yes. Legal UAE residents apply in Dubai or Abu Dhabi using their Emirates ID and residence visa. There is no need to return to India.

Which Schengen country should I apply to?

The one where you will spend the most nights. If evenly split, your country of first entry. You cannot choose based on appointment availability.

How much bank balance do Indian applicants need?

There is no fixed minimum. Show enough to cover roughly EUR 50 to 100 per day plus prepaid flights and hotels, built up steadily from salary rather than deposited suddenly.

How long does it take?

Processing is commonly around 15 calendar days once submitted, but appointment waits can add weeks. Apply 6 to 8 weeks ahead.

Does my UAE residence visa need to be valid after I return?

Most consulates require your UAE residence to remain valid for around three months beyond your return date. Renew first if it is close to expiry.

Schengen requirements vary by consulate and change over time. This guide is general information; always confirm current requirements with the relevant consulate, or contact our agents. Visa Doctor is a private service provider and does not issue visas.
