Quick answer: Ireland is not in the Schengen area, so your Schengen visa does not work. Most UAE residents need an Irish Short Stay C visa: apply online via AVATS, submit at VFS Dubai or Abu Dhabi, decided by the Embassy of Ireland in Abu Dhabi. Fees are roughly EUR 60 single / EUR 100 multiple entry plus the VFS charge, and processing commonly runs 4 to 8 weeks. Emiratis travel visa-free for 90 days. There is no urgent or fast-track service.

Ireland is one of the most misunderstood destinations for UAE residents. Almost everything people assume, that a Schengen visa covers it, that a UK visa always covers it, that you can rush it, is wrong. Here is the complete, accurate guide.

The single biggest mistake: assuming Schengen covers Ireland

Ireland is in the European Union but not in Schengen. It sits in the Common Travel Area with the UK and runs its own immigration system. So:

  • A Schengen visa will not get you into Dublin.
  • An Irish visa will not get you into France, Italy or Spain.
  • A trip covering Ireland and mainland Europe requires two separate applications. Plan both timelines.

Do you even need an Irish visa?

Your passportWhat applies
UAE (Emirati)Visa-free, up to 90 days
India, China, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Türkiye, Saudi, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman … with a valid UK short-stay visaMay travel without an Irish visa under the Short Stay Visa Waiver, strict conditions
India, Egypt, Filipino, Bangladeshi … without a UK visaIrish Short Stay C visa required
PakistanAlways needs an Irish visa, not on the waiver list

Your passport decides, not your UAE residency. Nationality guides: Indian citizens · Pakistani citizens.

How to apply from Dubai, step by step

  1. AVATS, complete the Irish immigration online application, then print and sign the summary sheet.
  2. Pay the fee, approximately EUR 60 (single entry) or EUR 100 (multiple entry), plus the VFS service charge.
  3. Book VFS, submit your passport and documents in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
  4. Decision, VFS forwards your file to the Embassy of Ireland in Abu Dhabi.
  5. Collect your passport.

Processing time and the “urgent Ireland visa” myth

Short-stay Irish visas commonly take 4 to 8 weeks from the date the Embassy receives a complete file, and longer in summer or if they ask for more documents.

Ireland does not sell priority, express or fast-track processing to applicants in the UAE. It simply does not exist. If an agency offers you an “urgent Irish visa,” they are either misleading you or planning to submit something they should not. Start 8 to 10 weeks before travel and do not book non-refundable flights. See our honest guide to choosing a visa agency in Dubai.

Documents checklist

  • Passport (valid well past your return) and previous passports.
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID.
  • Signed AVATS summary and a compliant photo, verify with our photo checker.
  • Bank statements (usually 6 months, stamped) and salary certificate / NOC.
  • Flights, hotels and a day-by-day itinerary.
  • A signed letter of application, Ireland places unusual weight on this. Use our cover letter generator.
  • Travel insurance.
  • If visiting family: an invitation letter and the host’s status documents.

Generate your exact list with the checklist generator and budget with the cost calculator.

What causes Irish refusals

Ireland assesses finances and ties. The recurring self-inflicted error is a large, unexplained deposit landing shortly before you apply, it reads as borrowed money staged for the application. Consistent salary credits are far more persuasive. The other common failure is a weak or missing letter of application. Test your case with the approval-chance estimator, and use the refusal decoder if you have been refused before, and always declare a previous refusal.

How Visa Doctor helps

We start by telling you whether you need an Irish visa at all, some UK visa holders do not, and we will say so rather than sell you an application. If you do need one, we handle AVATS, review your bank statements before submission, write the letter of application, and book VFS. See our Ireland visa page or all services.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Schengen visa work for Ireland?

No. Ireland is not in the Schengen area and requires its own visa.

How long does an Irish visa take from Dubai?

Commonly 4 to 8 weeks from the date the Embassy receives a complete application, and longer in peak season.

Is there an urgent or fast-track Irish visa?

No. Ireland does not offer priority processing from the UAE. Any agency claiming otherwise is misleading you.

Do Emiratis need a visa for Ireland?

No. UAE nationals travel visa-free for short stays of up to 90 days.

Can I use my UK visa instead?

Only if your nationality is on the Short Stay Visa Waiver list, you hold a real UK visa (not an ETA), and you have already landed in the UK.

Irish visa rules change and the waiver programme is kept under review. This guide is general information, always confirm current requirements with the Irish Immigration Service (irishimmigration.ie) or the Embassy of Ireland before you travel, or contact our agents. Visa Doctor is a licensed private service provider and does not issue visas.

  1. One planning tip worth repeating: because Ireland has no priority or fast-track option, it is the destination most likely to derail a summer trip. If your itinerary includes both Ireland and mainland Europe, start the Irish application first, it is the slower of the two, and the Schengen visa will not cover it.
