The F-1 interview in the UAE is short, and most of it comes down to three themes: your study plan, your finances and your ties to home. Here are the questions UAE students are most often asked and how to think about each one.
Typical questions are why you chose this school, why this course, how you found out about it, what you will study and what you plan to do afterwards. A good answer is specific: name the programme features that matter to you and connect the degree to a career. A vague answer such as “it is a good university” does not help.
Expect questions on the total cost for the first year, who is paying, what the sponsor does for a living and how much savings or income supports the plan. The I-20 shows the estimated cost, so your funding evidence should cover at least that figure. Know the numbers without reading from papers.
Officers have to be satisfied that you are a genuine student who will leave the US when your studies end. They may ask about family in the UAE or your home country, work you plan to do afterwards, or property and commitments. Answer truthfully. Do not claim you will definitely return if your plans are open, and do not hide that you are considering work options after your degree.
The State Department has asked F, M and J applicants to make their social media accounts public for review, so check the current instruction on the official site and make sure your online profiles are consistent with what you tell the officer. Previous US visits, refusals and travel history are on your DS-160, and your answers must match it.
Usually a few minutes. Officers decide quickly, so your first answers matter, and you should have your documents ready but only hand them over if asked.
Applicants normally attend alone. Parents of minors or sponsors may be asked questions separately, so check the instructions on your appointment confirmation.
No. Rehearsed scripts sound unnatural. Know your own facts, such as your course, tuition and who is paying, and answer in your own words.
For the full document list, read our F-1 documents checklist. If you were refused, see what to do after a 214(b) refusal.
Your first consultation is free. Tell us your situation and we will tell you honestly where you stand before you pay anything. We cannot guarantee approval, because the decision is always the consular officer’s. See our full US student visa guide for UAE residents.
